We only ended up here as it was across the road from our apartment and we were too tired on our first night to walk down to the marina. It is in a slightly odd location in a rather tired looking complex with the Cactus Bar and Parky's.

Given it was a Thursday night in early April and its inauspicious location, the place was virtually full. The staff were charming and showed us to a corner table. It is very simply decorated. The other diners were large groups, families and couples - a whole range. We just had salads to start which were brightened with the addition of some salad dressing (after I requested oil and vinegar). I then had the Portuguese steak for my main - a sirloin cooked in a pottery dish with sliced potatoes and, bizarrely, topped with a slice of processed ham!! However it was juicy and delicious. My partner had a mixed meat kebab which came hanging from a stand and was a very generous portion. He also had yummy hand-cut 'proper chips', hot from the fryer - just lovely.

With a bottle of red, I think it was around €40 - excellent value for some simple home cooking.

Service was great - waiting staff were delightful, but the food was poor. Steak was not cooked as asked and was so chewy had to leave the majority. Didn't give us a taste of Portugal

The location of this restaurant leaves a little to be desired but once inside it is warm and welcoming and the staff are very friendly and attentive. Certainly no views as offered down by the Marina but then again you pay a premium for them and don't always get the best quality of food. It wasn't a problem for us though as dark by 7pm and too cold to sit outside!!

There isn't a massive menu but the food we ate was very well cooked with generous portions at a very reasonable price. The prawns in garlic were very tasty which we shared as a starter and both the fried chicken breast and pork loin were tender and juicy..

We enjoyed it so it much we went back another evening and it was the best of the restaurants we visited whilst in Vilamoura. Would recommend.

Stayed further along the coast this year but made a trip over to A Carpa and found nothing had changed since last year, great service, great food, great ambience and great price.

The staff really do like to look after you here and our last round of drinks was on the house, which was a lovely touch.

Keep it up A Carpa and see you next year!!
