Have just returned from a week stay at the Crowne Plaza and we had a fantastic holiday. The weather was amazing which was probably the biggest bonus given the wonderful 'summer weather' we have been having in the UK.

Having read some reviews prior to our visit, i was a bit worried about what to expect but i have to say that most of the complaints which we read about did not affect us. On arrival at the hotel, check in was a smooth process and we were promptly issued with our room key to our junior suite on the 8th floor. Now when we booked junior suite, we expected a relatviely large room with a definitive separate living area, but this wasnt the case. The bathroom was closed off with a large and heavy sliding door (with a clear glass door separating the bathroom from the toilet - which we found rather strange) and the bed area was only separated from a sofa with a net type curtain which came across less than half the room. In reality, this is the type of room size we would have expected for a city break hotel, not a sunny beach one. Also of note was the presence of only one chair on the balcony however this was rectified by pulling out one of the chairs from the room onto the balcony.

The rooms were always cleaned to a high standard although sometime it was nearly 4pm before the room was done which we though rather late in the day. We did miss the availability of a kettle to make tea and the fact that a coffee machine was supplied but no capsules to use it rather peculiar - a ploy to get you to have to buy them at a ridiculous marked up price! However the fridge was useful for storing water etc which we bought at the supermarket and the claims of the hotel not allowing food purchased elsewhere to be stored in the fridge were never enforced.

We stayed on a b+b basis and the breakfasts were ok but the range wasn't great - being gluten free i was limited really to scrambled eggs or fruit and we felt that a bigger range would have been expected for a hotel which is meant to be 5*. We did try the restaurant at lunch a couple of times and my husband thoroughly enjoyed the burgers however on one occassion i risked asking for a gluten free sandwich which was completely inedible but this is normal i guess for many locations and i have been spoilt recently in other resorts we have stayed at with amazing gluten free food.

As for the pool area, there are minimal sun loungers around the pool however we found these to be rather sheltered and you miss out on the lovely sea breeze which you get in the grass area with the fatboy bean bags. Yes they are very ungracious to get out of (even more so as i am 6 months pregnant!) but once you manage to get them comfy, they are a great alternative and certainly a unique thing for the Crowne Plaza.

We would say that we found the staff at the hotel to be mostly very friendly and helpful. In particular, my husband was unwell one night and i had to phone reception in the early hours of the morning to get maintenance up and they were there and sorted our sink within 20mins and were extremely pleasant about the whole thing.

I would also note that wifi is charged at 50euro for the week (thankfully it was included in the junior suite price) but the the connection is incredibly slow and frequently disconnects you at random intervals. We did find it rather frustrating but then maybe it was a good excuse to get away from the ipad!

The location of the hotel was handy to Vilamoura marina and its variety of restaurants. When we next return to Portugal, i think we might try a different resort but if you are looking for a convenient hotel which is probably a 4*, the Crowne Plaza would be an option worth considering.

Room Tip: Go for the junior suite if possible - only cost us £100 extra for the week and did give you that extra bit of space and was on a higer floor so a better view out over the ocean.

This was probably the nicest hotel we have ever stayed in. We had a Junior Suite overlooking the sea and it was a lovely spacious, luxury room. Bed was comfortable, it had a TV, fridge and lovely bathroom.

Staff were extremely polite and helpful (excluding restaurant staff which I'll come to in a minute!). We arrived early in the morning booking a last minute room and the lady on reception was great, showing us two different rooms for us to choose from and spoke excellent English.

Pool was lovely, sunbeds were busy but we preferred to use the big bean bags out on the grass where there was a lovely breeze by the sea. You could always get one of these, even on busy days.

There is a bar by the pool with waiter service (although food and drink at the hotel was really expensive!). There is also a shop where you can buy daily papers and suncream etc.

It has very good spa facilities, an indoor pool, gym and hairdressers. I had a pedicure and my husband had a massage and they were both excellent.

The location is perfect, right on the beach and only 5 minutes walk to the marina.

The only let down about this hotel was the restaurants. Breakfast was fine, the usual spread with hot food, pastries and fresh fruit. However the lunch menu was expensive and the service was pretty awful. One day at lunchtime there were only about 4-5 tables and we had to wait 15 minutes for our drinks! So the service in restaurants and the food itself (which was often not hot enough) needs to be improved.

This was my only negative comment, overall I thought this was a lovely hotel, living up to the 5* rating and I would definitely go back.

After looking at some of the criticism at tripadvisor we decided to avoid the restaurants. There are plenty of nice restaurants closeby and we had a light breakfast in our room. Almost everything else was really excellent, although it may not be really 5* according to central European standards.

The building is somewhat older but has obviously been refurbished not long ago. We had a superior room on the highest floor with a phantastic view at the sea and Quarteira, the next village which is less than a mile away. This room was very convenient. The bathroom was very nice and was separated from the bedroom by a glass pane. You could have a shower while looking at the sea. We also liked our own private and secluded balcony where you would not see any of your neighbors.

The pool is quite long and can be used for some serious swimming training. There are plenty of sun loungers, parasols, and also "fatboy" mattresses to be used on the surrounding lawn. There is also a small gym in the basement with five cardio machines and four wightlifting machines plus some free weights. It is not really satisfactory when you're used to workout regularly but better than nothing.

Some little criticism:
- No newspapers delivered to your room in the morning
- The WiFi in our room had a terrible performance.
- Housekeeping often forgets this and that and the drinking glasses are never really clean.
- Housekeeping restocks the amenities (if they don't forget it) but for some reason never restocks body lotion and coffee.

Bottom line: We enjoyed our one week stay very much and will surely come again. We did not miss the hotel restaurant and enjoyed the local restaurants in the area.

Location is great, about 10 minuntes walk from marina, lovely pool and gardens, and now with plenty new beanbags for lying in the gardens , tho we noticed, that now, all neighbouring residents using the gardens for sunbathing and swimming....and as a result packed on the weekend....no control on who comes and goes, and indeed lift access to rooms not key controlled ........beach only 3 or 4 minute walk away...

The rooms are spacious, with modern decor , lovely comfortable beds, nice balcony, prefer the rooms facing Vilamoura for evening sun..

Only ate breakfast once, and the spread was really pretty poor, for 5 star hotel, thats my only complaint, however being on holiday after first day, we had lunch in the town instead..

Albufeira about 20 euros by taxi, little less to bar street, but worth the trip to see the hen and stag festivities , especially saturday night....quite entertaining..

Vilamoura predeminantly , maybe 90 % or more British / Irish resort....plenty well behaved golfers in the hotel, overall , very happy with the standard of hotel and location, most probaly very few better hotels in the Algarve...

Room Tip: rooms facing Vilamoura / sea get evening sun, for late risers, if you want morning sun get rooms facing to Quartiera/sea Front facing junior suites , much larger, and much more expensive.tho probaly worth it if ur travellig with kids
