“Good Self Catering Cabin”
Reviewed May 7, 2013 via mobile

Very clean and well equipped cabin by the harbour. Showers were excellent and the underfloor heating would be very welcome in the cooler months.
It was a good twenty minute walk from the centre of town with not a lot around it, so location wasn't the best.

We spent two nights in March 2013 in one of the fisherman's cabins at Svinoya Rorbuer – we were in cabin 23 which must have one of the best outlooks of all the cabins. From our door we had a view of the mountain that dominates the northern end of Svolvaer, and from our kitchen and living room we had a magnificent view over the water to the small islands out in the sea. We spent a good hour or more watching sea eagles.

The cabin was very clean, cosy, comfortable, and well equipped. The centre of Svolvaer is about a 20 minute walk over the bridge which connects Svinoya to Svolvaer, where there are a couple of good supermarkets. This meant that it’s easy and convenient (and cost-effective) to buy food to prepare yourselves in the cabin, which we did for breakfast and dinner. The bedroom was basic, but the beds were very comfortable and we had no problems sleeping. The bathroom had an excellent shower and underfloor heating which was perfect given the conditions outside. Guests should be aware that in winter the wooden walkways to the cabins can be icy, but even with our cases we had no real problems.

The reception staff were extremely helpful in many aspects of the stay: advice on local shops, arranging a taxi for us back to Svolvaer harbour on our last night, and allowing us to stay in the cabin until late evening on the day of our departure (for no extra cost).

On our first night we ate at the restaurant next to reception. I would certainly recommend it– the fish and lamb dishes were really good, and I even had some reindeer meat as a starter. It is a bit expensive, but that’s true of all good restaurants throughout the whole of Norway.

Room Tip: Cabins overlooking sea (e.g. #23) have great view.

I am not going to complain as the manager very kindly refunded a nights stay as we had checked out early. The reason was the hut we were allocated was hemmed in with a grim view and very cold. There are many rorbuers to choose from some with fabulous views over sea and mountains and as we had booked months before I expected one to look like the pictures on their web page. I am sorry to say it wasn't and after a cold nights stay we decided to move. There was a yearly cod fishing championships that week so I think we got almost the worst hut. The restaurant is very good and the breakfast delicious. Just a warning, look into which hut you are given so not to be disappointed as we were.

We stayed only two nights in Svolvaer. The Apartments/townhouses were excellent. They were very clean, comfortable and wonderfully located.
I had joked with my wife that we were going to stay on cots in a fisher house on the water. It was far from this. The Apartments were excellent.
Svolvaer is beautiful with a few great hikes just out of town. You can't go wrong.

Arrived in mid afternoon after an exhilarating bus journey from Narvik. Very comfortable cabin in superb location surrounded by spectacular scenery. Were lucky enough to see the Aurora on both nights. Also enjoyed a very good meal in the restaurant. But beware the price of wine - £40 for the cheapest bottle!

We arrived on the late bus from Narvik after a four-hour trip and needed to find an evening meal. The restaurant was booked out, but Hayley the manager looked after us most beautifully and graciously and well above the call of duty by allowing us to eat in the small museum/reception area. Let me say how grateful we both are for her friendliness, charm and beautiful Scandinavian hospitality. The Lofoten Bacalao could not have been more readily received.

Our travel agent had booked us for five nights here, and what a super time we had perched on the edge of the island overlooking the Artic Highway and the mountains and able to watch the activities of the harbour, in full swing in mid-February. We heard the sounds, smelt the smells and saw the fabulous Arctic light right from the living room and kitchen of our comfortable fishermen's rorbu. It was a lovely base to come back to after exploring the wonders of Lofoten. We saw the aurora borealis too.

Be aware that the wooden jetties can be quite slippery in winter and you have to tread carefully, especially if you have quite a lot of luggage. If you're hiring a car, do your unpacking and reloading in small shifts, and don't risk any slips in the ice and snow.

The highlights of Lofoten are too many to mention, but Henningsvaer, on the end of the island that Svolvaer is on, is exceptionally lovely, the road down to A i Lofoten is wonderful but undergoing a lot of tunnelling work at the moment at the far western end so care is needed when driving these roads. The Lofotr Viking Museum is open on Saturdays and Wednesdays in winter and is well worth a visit, and presents some fascinating material in a very modern, up to date way with subtle lighting and excellent use of computer technology. Much of the outside areas are covered in snow, but what there is to see in winter is very compelling.

The small villages at the base of tall mountains, village churches still very much keeping the faith alive in small and remote communities are beautiful and inspirational. The subtle pinks and blues and greens of the Arctic light with the sun low on the horizon delineating the distant peaks of the mainland take the breath away.

The aurora borealis from a dark sky bringing out the jagged edges of the mountains were also truly awe-inspiring.

Lofoten is well worthwhile in winter as well as in summer. Svinoyer Rorbuer is on a working island. You have a true sense of living and staying in a working community, unlike so many other places in the world where the holiday resort reigns supreme.

Five sublime and unforgettable days. Then the Hurtigruten to Tromso and beyond ...

Room Tip: Really any of the rorbuer will give you a fabulous view of something fascinating. Don't expect...

We recently stayed 3 nights in one of the fishernan's cabins and really enjoyed our stay. The cabin was warm and cosy and we took advantage of the kitchen although we also ate at their restaurant which was really good too. The cabin we had had a great view of the harbour with some fish drying racks in the vicinity. These were thankfully empty as some others we visited weren't and they can certainly smell. We had a late check out as we were catching the Hurtigruten and there was no charge which we thought very generous. In all very friendly and helpful. A good choice.
