“Nice walk (with kids)”

Castle Ruins & Velvet Cave
Reviewed August 12, 2016 via mobile

Nice 30 minute walk. Fun to do with the children, for them there is a small quest. You can also visit the "fluweelgrot". (We didn't do that.) Afterwards you can have a tea or coffee in the restaurant.

Although the castle was slighted (ruined) by our own king William III (before he was our king) there is more than enough left to visualise the castle in its heyday. The various parts of the ruins are labelled in English as well as Dutch and easy to follow. The views over the town and surrounding are good.
The castle is located next to the town centre.

A young enthousiastic guide, with a lot of informatie. Even with a wheelchair you can do the tour. The tour was in Dutch.
The ruïne has pamflets in english and Dutch. It was less interesting than we thought. But even though it was enormous.

The castle ruins in Valkenburg were the last of a big castle day for my friend, daughter and I last week. We rushed to park, ran up the stairs to the site and made sure we were there before 5:30pm (which we had read was last entry). The woman working the desk seemed amused at our concern of being denied entry to the castle.

The site is absolutely gorgeous. Lovely views, ruins are well preserved. My daughter made friends with a Dutch girl; other tourists were friendly, everyone seemed pretty happy. One of the highlights of our day. I'd definitely recommend a visit. The town is lovely as well. Parking was easy to find on the road at the time (just after 5pm), but I imagine it'd be a bit harder earlier in the day.

The guided tour of the caves was amazing! The guide spoke in Dutch, of course, but we had been provided with an English language fact sheet before the tour and he kept checking with us to see if we understood or had questions. Lots of history to see and hear about...
