“Castle and caves”

Castle Ruins & Velvet Cave
Reviewed July 12, 2014

Enjoyed the guided tour of the caves even though it was in Dutch. A fact sheet helped. The Castle was a good excersise provider. Cafe clean. Loved sitting outside the view of Valkenburg is worth the climb.

We went to the caves during their Christmas Market and had a fantastic time. It was warmer in the caves than it was outside so that was nice for all of us. If you see all the caves it will take you a long time so plan for a whole day.

We visited the caves first and subsequently the castle ruins - 3 hours is more than enough time. Both aspects were interesting, but the cave visit is guided and only in Dutch. We were provided with information sheets (pretty hard to read in a cave!) but still couldn't glean all the information on offer. Nevertheless, there are varied aspects to the cave complex (religious, connections with wartime, etc) which makes the trip worthwhile. The castle is indeed ruined but the information boards have English sections and the displays convey some impression of how the castle looked in previous times. Just being on top of a hill in Holland gives a different impression of the surrounding countryside. The cafe is nice.

The Castle Ruins are fantastic. Its incredible to think of what this must have looked like prior to being blown up in 1672 as there is still so much to see. We were able to purchase a little book in English to walk through the ruins, they also had signs along the way in both English and Dutch.
However, getting to the Velvet Cave - we were not told the tour was only in Dutch and we were not given the paper with a little bit of English explanation on it. The tour started and another couple spoke up asking if there was going to be any English and the guide said no, he would only speak Dutch and that we could read the paper. The other couple gave us one of their papers, however, in a cave it is dark so very difficult to read, The guide would talk at length about things and the information on our paper was 3 lines. An older Dutch couple took pity on us and they tried to translate some of the narrative for us which was really sweet and much appreciated. The cave itself is fantastic but unless you speak and understand Dutch don't expect to get much out of it.
We were disappointed as we had truly wanted to hear the history as American's we knew that some of our Military men in WWII were hidden in these caves from the German and we wanted to see this.
I know we are not the only English speaking people to visit the area. It would be nice if they had maybe one English tour a day and advertised that on their website etc. So people could plan their day and actually hear and appreciate the history.

We were lucky enough to visit on a warm sunny day so it made the trip all the better. Once you make it to the top you are rewarded with great views over the town. The ruins itself are interesting and are certainly worth a visit. At regular intervals information boards are posted with a short explanation on what you are looking at. If that bores you just let your imagination run wild as i did.
