“christmas markets”

Castle Ruins & Velvet Cave
Reviewed January 9, 2014

the many Christmas markets throughout Europe are all in the open air, this is unique as it takes place in the Velvet Cave under the Castle Ruins. It takes a good 1 1/2 to 2 hours to walk around the route visiting the various stalls or stopping for some refreshment half way around. Also every year they have tableaus with a different theme, this year it was Father Christmas and his little helpers in their home and work setting . with descriptions in English at each tableau. admission was 5 euro per person.

It is just a pile of what used to be so it's not magical. But the view from the top of the hill is really nice. We were travelling with a stroller and young child so it wasn't completely accessible. The grot was a great tour though! I would highly recommend taking that tour! The guide had a lot of information and it's very interesting especially for those who have special interest in war stories.

Nice setting for a Christmas market but could use a few more Christmas related stuff! From the entrance to about half way the Christmas route, there was little or nothing to see that was related to Christmas. It might have been due to the fact that it was the last evening (23rd Dec) but still....The organizers should come up with more stuff like add the xmas atmosphere like even simple, christmas music.
I have visited this place before without the market and it's well worth it. The drawings on the walls and the castle ruins are cool!

Bright, busy, enjoyable but we did'nt like the train driver turning off the lights in the middle of the caves, It did prove a point and the caves were interesting but it gave my daughter a panicky attack.
