“Loved Château St. Gerlach”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2008

Me and my family stayed at Château St. Gerlach as a birthday present for my mother. We stayed in one of the family appartments which was overlooking the garden. It was a lovely spacious appartment with two separate bedrooms and two bathrooms. I mentioned to the restaurant staff that it was my mother's birthday and they were so attentive. They even brought her a very special home made birthday cake. The food in one word was excellent, we took an extensive menu and all dishes were fabulous. I cannot understand that a restaurant of this quality lost its Michelin star!!!??? This should seriously be reconsidered. The next morning we got up early and after a nice breakfast we went to do some sightseeing in Maastricht. You do not even have to drive yourself since they have a shuttle bus taking you from the hotel to the city centre of Maastricht and they even pick you up, the time you want!!
After a nice day of shopping and sightseeing we went back to the hotel and had a swim in the hotel pool and took a steam bath.
Thank you Château St. Gerlach for making my mothers' birthday, one she will never forget.

I stayed at the Chateau St. Gerlach 2 nights for a conference.
The property is in a huge park with amazing garden features and a collection of statues - it's also very close to Maastricht. The woods around the property are amazing.

There's a main building with reception and bar, a restaurant building, a church, a number of lower buildings for the guest rooms, pool etc.

I refused the first room I was given. They are renting "apartments" with a 2 floor layout - seems great for families with children, there's a kitchen/sitting area downstairs and 2 bedroom/bathrooms upstairs (narrow, typical dutch stair).
I didn't like it because you can't see out of the windows in these rooms, they are under the steep roof, and there is only a window about 2 m up. If you ever feel claustrophobic in a hotel.. this is the place.

They then gave me a ground floor apartment which was nice, a bit boring in terms of decoration but with a great little private terrace overlooking a field. The bed was comfortable, all was quiet. Bathroom is large and functional, with an (appreciated) walk in shower and nice produces.

Another thing that was just so-so was the main restaurant: their bistro closes early, and although the setting of the main restaurant is that of an upscale place, the food was average (well, those are the Netherlands, what did I expect). If you're a gourmet and spoiled, don't expect much except for a large bill.

Stayed here in the resenditial suite, which is beautiful! Very romantic spaceous room and mostly friendly staff. (The restaurant staff didn't want us drinking coffee there after an evening walk, which gave us a very unwelcome feeling, but I guess that stuff happens when you're not in a suit at such a place, still though, we had the best room... )
Nice location near maastricht, not walkable but they have a shuttleservice.

When I checked tripadvisor I didn't find many comments on this place, hence my decision to add my experience, hopefully it will be helpful.
My husband and I just got back from a few days stay at the Chateau St Gerlach a few km away from Maastricht.
I had booked a junior suite for my husband's birthday and we got an upgrade as we got there, nice comfortable bedroom with lovely decor and good size bathroom. The bedroom had air conditioning but the room was not very cool.
We visited the spa, had some massages and had a lovely walk around the castle premises. It was very relaxing, just what we needed.
What we enjoyed the most was the superb a la carte restaurant. It was high standard cuisine, a real pleasure for the pallate. Good service too, staff was very friendly and professional.
Breakfast was good as well, there was a great choice, all very fresh.
Something we really liked was the bread..it was always served warm, whether at the bistrot or at the a la carte restaurant.
Bottom line, great place to spend a few days, visit the area, enjoy a fine dining experience in a exclusive setting.

We have been to this hotel many times, and every time it is great.
Even President George W Bush stayed here!
The area is gorgeous, very green , lots of land, garden with beautiful roses, vegetable garden, fruittrees, nice in and outdoor swimmingpool, sauna and steamroom.
The whole atmosphere is so relaxing, very soutern holland.
Food is fantastic. Roominteriour great, very elegant and comfortable, some rooms have an outdoor space, a small gardenarea. Staff is friendly and helpfull. The conservatory breakfastroom is stunning. Andre Rieu, the famous violinist, stays here often as well;he is an 'old' school friend of the owner, michiel oostwegel.
It has it's own chapel as well. There is a lot of history in this place.
It took the owners 15 years to complete it.
Bottomline.... go see this place, you'll love it.

My husband and I stayed for one night in this beautiful hotel in the Valkenburg area. Chateau St. Gerlach is a very nice and unique hotel, in a beautiful park and close to Valkenburg and Maastricht for activities. Dinner was nice, not very special but also not wrong. Most disappointing during our stay was the noise and lack of ventilation. We stayed at a Saturdaynight and during that night they were accomodating 3 weddings! It is was a beautiful summernight, the rooms were hot, and with no airco and minimal ventilation, we had to keep the windows open. And became "guests" of the wedding. We were sleeping next to the clocktower so every half hour the clocks rang. At 2 in the morning the party was over, and by half past 2 the rest over the place came in. St. Gerlach is a nice place but don't go on a Saturdaynight in summer.
