“Peaceful location, helpful, friendly staff.”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

We has 10 days in the hotel, it was a really good base, but I would say if you want to do anything but lie next to the stunning pool, eat in the great value restaurant and chill in the hotel bar, you really need a car. There are beautiful beaches within easy access with good, free, parking. There cafes on most beaches, we bought local produce from a very reasonable fruit and veg stall and local supermarket and had picnics most days. Donatell gave us a FREE parasol to take to the beach but sunbeds and parasols are available.
The rooms were beautifully clean, sheets changed frequently, comfortable beds, FREE air con. The restaurant served good, well priced food, the simple continental breakfast was ample. The thing that really added to our experience was the staff, they went out of their way to be helpful and friendly. Donatella is a ledgend! Really good local knowledge provided complete with maps! Denise and Stephanie were our lovely attentive waitresses. Nothing was too much trouble. I would definitely return to this hotel !

We eat here and really enjoyed it. We thought the food was good and fairly reasonable. This restaurant looked like one of the better ones in the area as the others were the standard sea-side food. We enjoyed the oportunity of dressing up for dinner after spending 2 weeks on the beach. The disused water flumes are a bit spooky - you can see them from miles and from a distance it looks like a water park, but there is grass growing in them!

The hotel is rustic and quaint as befits its former history as a monastery. The Reception staff were friendly helpful and polite but the same cannot be said for the Restaurant Manageress
Breakfast has already been described in a previous review so I was aware of what to expect before my visit. Extras such as toast bacon & egg were all available but at an additional cost
Wifi was available together with access to a desktop PC but again at an additional charge
Evening meals were reasonably priced compared with other local restaurants but be aware that a 10% surcharge is added to your restaurant bill although no mention is made in the menu
Pool is large & well maintained although surface near the edge was slippy and care required entering the water
Location is slightly off the beaten track and a car is recommended for getting around Ample parking is available across the road
Nearest beach circa 10/15 mins steady walk
Reasonable value but if you want extras it will cost you

Room Tip: Superior rooms offer better value

When checking in you are requested to pay for the all stay in advance. Never seen that before!
The hotel is in the middle of nowhere. The beach is almost 700 meter far away, not 300 meters as mention in the website.
Our room was old monastery style, but it was poorly lit and not clean enough. At our arrival we found ants everywhere, both in the bedroom and bathroom. Instead of offering a quick solution, the management blamed us for it.
I have never experienced such a terrible breakfast: it was composed of a croissant, a portion of marmalade, two crackers, orange-juice, coffee and cappuccino from the same machine. Butter, honey or bread were charged extra.
Staff was insufficient (a waiter for almost ten tables!), not helpful. Bar was unmanned.
Dinner at restaurant was too expansive for Italian standards.
The only positive thing was the pool, but beach-towels were not included...you had to pay extra to get one, of course.
Definitely, do not be enchanted by the low price if compared with the other hotels in the nearby, at the end you will spend more and you'll have a worse stay.

The hotel felt like it was trying to squeeze every single cent out of its guests. The staff was terrible, rude, and not the least bit helpful. Compared to all other hotels we stayed at, this was by far the worst I can ever recall. It felt more of a hassle and struggle to do anything at the hotel. Definitely stay somewhere else, since there are several lovely and pleasant hotels on the beautiful island.

Il Monastero is an unusual, oddly-styled but fun stay - if you can put up with some of its more quirky aspects.

Minus points:

• It's off the beaten track - a car is recommended although there is a good bus service, but the timetable is restrictive
• Rooms are minimalist (one small window and no "views") but fully air con. Our room only had one electric power point, the mattresses were smaller than the bedsteads, and the TV channel choice was poor
• Meals, other than half-board, are pretty standard; basic Italian but well presented. Breakfast is probably the worst aspect - machine coffee, processed fruit juice, something resembling a pre-packed baby rusk (with two mini tubs of jam), and a croissant. Anything else and it will cost you.
• Lunch - one waitress to serve up to 10 tables, so be ready for a long wait.
• The bar is always unmanned - ring for service

Plus points

• Italian (Sardinian) vibe
• Family atmosphere - guests include young lovers, families and elderly couples
• Relaxing - no hustle
• Walking distance to beach and bus stops
• Pleasant, friendly and helpful staff
• Large room and bathroom (superior rate)
• Good-size swimming pool and sun beds
• Beautifully clear roads (outside Cagliari) for motoring

This is never going to be more than a 3-star hotel - but that's its charm.

Arrived at this fairly remote hotel quite late in the evening and was greeted with a polite request to have something to eat with an assertive 'no'! Thankfully this was reversed by the ever smiley and resourceful manageress, Donatella. The next few days were calm, relaxed and comfortable. Breakfast was basic but the lunches and dinners were of a very high standard. The room was kept clean and cool - although it could do with an upgrade fairly soon. A car is a must if exploring is your plan for this part of the coast.
