“Great stay”
Reviewed February 19, 2014

I stayed here with a friend, and we had a fantastic time. The food in the restaurant is excellent (try to olive oil they serve with some bread), and so is it's service. The personnel was so kind to open a bottle of wine which we brought and start a nice chat.
The hotel room was very proper and the bed was big (and separable).
The breakfast is truly continental, a rarity in Italy.

We have enjoyed our stay at this typical Tuscan mini resort so much, I recommend it to everyone who's come back for a taste of Tuscany or is visiting the region for the 1st time. Within driving distance of Siena, Firenze, San Gimignano, they have a cozy restaurant up in Castello Monteriggioni as well. The fashion outlets are within reach too, like Fashion Valley & Barberino. Service is great, staff's very helpful & friendly, rooms are adequate, the grounds are beautifully maintained, and the decor is rustic with a touch of shabby chic. In the middle of one of Italy's most beautiful landscapes, this has been a wonderful holiday. Love, love, love.

After staying in Florence this seemed to be in the middle of the Tuscan countryside about 15-20 minutes walk along a road and up a very steep hill to the marvellous walled town of Monteriggioni. This was a very good base for Volterra, San Gimignano and Siena. In fact, whilst in the town, a half marathon came through to great acclaim on the way to the majestic city of Siena. The hotel was clean, very spacious and all on one level in various wings. Choose a room overlooking the pool [not as clean as it could have been] as these had mezzanines with a staircase and extra beds with French doors which opened out to the swimming pool area and the dining conservatory. Our room was on the outside with minimal views and no French windows. The rooms were fairly comfortable but with no coffee- or tea-making facilities and expensive items in the minibar. Shop for yourselves and stock the fridge with your own water. The TV came with two controls with no instructions as to how to use them [both were required] so a multi-language guide would have been helpful. The meals were also basic. Breakfasts were buffet-style with enough choices to satisfy the multinational mix but the hot food was limited. We found the bacon was very fatty & the scrambled egg was rather solid. A fairly good choice of cold foods and fruits though. Do ask for teapots for your morning cuppa as they are available, especially as the vacuum flasks were never hot enough for a brew. Evening meals were OK but over-priced if not staying with a group. We'd have preferred the barbecue as it looked and smelled good but weren't offered that on our tour. All the extras were also expensive. We’re not alcohol drinkers but our friends said it was a high cost for the quality of the wine and the water which is put on the table is not gratis – currently €3 per bottle which they didn’t mention until afterwards. That said, it was a good restful place away from the bustle of the big cities.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms with mezzanines overlooking the pool. Easily the best places to relax after a hard day...

A great small hotel near Monteriggioni, Despite being sited near a main road the hotel was quiet and we could hardly hear any traffic.
The staff were friendly and helpful and our room was tastefully decorated and comfortable.
We ate in the hotel twice and found the food very good, but a bit pricey. Breakfast was typical Tuscan fare with plenty of choice.
The large pool was nice, a bit cold but then the air temperature was in the high 30's!
The region is beautiful with stunning views around every corner, of which there are many!

We spent 4 nights at this hotel (Motel?) in August. We were told it was out in the Tuscan countryside, which, to some extent it was - if you ignore the Autostrada traffic behind the hotel and the busy main road in front of it!
I read with some incredulity another report that states the hotel is "right outside" Castel Monteriggioni. It is outside....by over a mile (walking on a busy main road), or an hour(plus) over the fields. You are "five minutes away from the heart of Sienna".... if you happen to own a helicopter!
The M/Hotel is furnished in, what I take to be, a mock Italian style. The decor was rather tired and the walls had worrying cracks in them - but it was clean enough.
The dining area was quite pleasant, but the food wasn't. Evidently the Italians enjoy thin slices of lukewarm turkey accompanied by 4 cold tomatoes washed down by the cheapest wine on the menu - at 20 Euros a bottle ( 5 or 6 Euros elsewhere).
Breakfast was a race against time as things seemed to be constantly running out. Coffee, tea and hot milk were dispensed from 3 large flasks and these seemed to be perpetually empty or on the verge of emptiness. One morning the hotel ran out of tea bags.
I was rather worried by the pool, which looked very inviting and clean, surrounded by good sunbeds, but with some eccentric features to catch out the unwary (especially small children). i.e. well hidden underwater ledges and projections that could cause the hearty adult swimmer to collide with them quite painfully - but more importantly, a small child could take one step - from shallow to much deeper water. Twice I saw people step on the surrounding grill of the pool, only for the grill to tip up and their foot drop down the resulting hole.
The staff were friendly.
Most guests seemed to be using the rooms as a stop-over for a night. If you wanted to break your journey at a reasonable motel - this is the place.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the pool and if you like a drink, stock up before you go....there is no where...

Where to start what a disaster. We arrived at what should be a four star hotel but is only a three star. The receptionist with the short dark hair was less than welcoming and her first words to us were "We have a problem. There was no reservation for us. We had booked through our travel agent for seven nights and had all the relevent paper work from Cresta Holidays. She did not seem bothered and told us they could book us in for 5 nights but not 7 and we would have to find ourvselves some where to stay for the other 2 nights. We pointed out we had the paper work and receipts for 7 nights and we expected them to honour our booking. She was having none of it and started to raise her voice so I told her I did not like her attitude. They had a team building event on for a weekend and needed the whole hotel for this event.. She then showed us an inferior room small with a shower not the superior room with the bathroom which we had booked. That was another complaint but she did give in and move us to what we had booked. As I said NOT HELPFUL.. After 3 days and looking for some where to stay instead of enjoying our holiday i broke own and told them i would rather go home. Laura a very nice manager then became involved and found us some where else to stay and arranged for us to have a complimentary meal in their restaurant close by. Never the less we were very stressed spent time looking at hotels instead of sight seeing and had to pack up move and un pack another day lost. I was so stressed the following week i had to go to hospital yet another day lost. This hotel is not to be recommended and is ful of Japanese who take over the restaurants.

The Il Piccolo Castello hotel is Montereggioni was excellent. Small property all rooms in a horseshow setting around a pool and acres of greenery. right outside of castel montreggioni and 5 minutes away from heart of siena. rooms were done up in Italian renassaince and really big and spacious as were bathroom. Hotel staff was excellent and the hotel has restaurant on premises for breakfast lunch and dinners and was excellent and accommodating to whatever you wanted. good location. In siena we ate in five star restaurant where locals eat and the prices were not expensive. Ristorante Guido. Unbelievably delicious. In castle montereggioni eat at the Ristorante da Remo. Same owners as our hotel restaurant and food was great.
wonderful trip
