My daughter and I visited Il Ciliegio as part of a Globus Italian tour. This family farm is an example in self-sufficiency and sustainability while the food was delicious and service impeccable.

The farm is in its fourth generation of management with Papa and relatives waiting and serving on our 30+ person group. We began our tour with a view of their farmland, livestock, and operation, then moved to a wine tasting and dinner. The wine was so good that many asked about US distribution. Since there are no sulfites, it did not cause a typical wine headache. The food was delicious and the courses kept coming, which made many express desire to know ahead of time how much food or number of courses so they could have left room for the next course.

The fact that the farm operates on solar, treats and processes their own water, grows their own food, raises their own livestock, and manages their own operation. It was refreshing to meet papa and the whole family while enjoying their farm.

I highly recommend a tour, visit to the retail side, and dining in the restaurant. While we had plenty of time to experience the operation, I want to go back so I can take more time outside of a group schedule. My daughter and I loved it and the other tour participants raved, too.

We visited Il Ciliegio as we were touring Tuscany and Umbria. This place was a highlight of our two week vacation. First, it is family owned and operated. The warmth of the family bond permeates the entire experience. Grandparents, parents, children and cousins serve the guests and the food is homemade and authentic. Papa welcomed us with an aperitif after the eldest son gave us a tour of the winery in very well spoken English. Ingredients are as fresh as you can get them and the food was very delicious (Mamma's recipes). They are a family who takes great pride in their life's work, which is the produce served to their guests. What also sets this agrituristico apart is its commitment to the environment. The winery and surrounding buildings are powered by solar energy, the water is recycled, purified and used to sustain the grapevines. They raise much of the livestock served, cure their own meats and grow wheat to make their bread and pasta. These people are committed to excellence in agriculture and are as self-sustaining as practical. Their chianti was some of the best we tasted in the entire region! The olive oil is excellent as well. We took some of each home to share with our own friends and family. When we visited it was cold and raining outside, so we were not able to enjoy the beautiful Tuscan countryside that evening. However, the interior was inviting and seating at long tables was family style (of course!).

We stumbled upon il Ciliegio when looking for another agriturismo. It was about 2:30pm and we were worried that we wouldn't be able to find a place to eat, but the four of us were able to sit and eat. I believe that the whole meal was €26/person and included water, wine, meats & cheese, bread, pasta, meat and salad, and dessert along with after dinner coffee and liquers. My personal favorites were the pasta and the cheese and honey. The staff was also quite friendly, even though we just dropped in. I believe that there is also an a la carte menu, but this was perfect for us. I would definitely return if we were in the area again.
