“Great hotel and friendly staff”
Reviewed August 21, 2009

Recently returned from a fantastic holiday, where we got married at St Paul's Bay and had our reception at the hotel. We had a awesome room, we paid extra for a junior suite, but it was well worth it. As we were given a spare room on our wedding day and it was shabby and run down, and desperate need of a refurb. Our room 136 was modern and chic, it was on the top floor near to the reception so we had fantastic views and it allowed for easy access to reception and the pool. However get use to climbing stairs or using lifts as the hotel is on a steep hillside. There is cable car that transports you up and down the first 4 floors, however it did breakdown a few times in our second week, but we welcomed the walk as we were stuffed from the amount of food we had consumed over the 2 weeks.
The buffet restaurant was fantastic; Michaelis (Food and beverages Manager) and Savas were warm, welcoming and friendly to us. Effy (wedding coordinator) was very efficient at organising our wedding meal and decorations. We traded in our evening meal for vouchers a couple of times which was worth it if you were heading out for food, the views are pretty spectacular from the a' la carte restaurant. But the buffet restaurant had a huge selection and was of a very high quality. If you do have a family I would take a second mortgage as drinks and ice cream are expensive at the pool bar and the cost will add up over 2 weeks with kids.
We are usually adventurous and travel and explore places during our holidays, however we rarely left the hotel as there was always space by the top large pool or on the beach and the views and food were good enough to keep us at the hotel.
The beach is stony but is very pretty and water is clear and clean. There are beds most days, so no need to rush.
If you are expecting a hotel within easy walking distances of lots of tavernas and bars, you are going to be disappointed as the hotel is situated in the middle of nowhere. If you want a quiet relaxing holiday without tacky bars, this is the hotel for you.
Tips
We took our towels down at breakfast time which enabled us to get a sun bed, however there was always one available after lunch when people leave to have lunch.
If you are a couple take the bus to Lindos as a Taxi both ways is 14 euros and a bus is 5. 60 euros return, but a family should book a taxi; they are modern and very clean.
Pay extra and get a junior suite as these have been refurb very recently.
Greek night is well worth 11 euros, get down early 7.30pm to secure a good table with a good view of the show later, and eat slowly and enjoy a bottle of wine while watching the entertainment and dancing.
Buy you water and snacks from the supermarket on the beach. As water in the hotel shop is 6 euros for 6 bottles, 6bottles in the supermarket is 2euros.
Book a car in Lindos village (when you visit) as Rhodos car company whose are based there and at the hotel, charge an extra 10 euros if you book through them at the hotel, but will drop your car at the hotel and will pick it up from there too for no extra charge. However the bus will take you most places near by and are air conditioned and comes regularly.
The Acropolis is worth a visit, but make it early or late in the day as it is a hell of a walk in the heat.
The entertainment at the hotel is of a poor quality some nights. The Beatles and Celine Dion, are very good, however I have no idea why she has 2 random dances with her. If Abba tribute is on, take the opportunity to go to Lindos for the night. When there is no entertainment, pop down to the Lindian Gulf bar/hotel, they have entertainment most nights.
A great holiday if you want to relax and recuperate, would book again if we return to Rhodes.

.......we have come to the conclusion that it depends on the room that you get. We booked a sea view and the first room that we were given had nothing of the kind and the balconies had no real partitions for any privacy. The second room that we got had a partial sea view at a stretch and the third room that we got had a splendid one but the evening sewage smell and cockroach invasion meant we had to go out every night BUT.......we had a fantastic time. We are not serial moaners so we got on with having fun. It simply comes down to whether or not you got a refurbished room or not and we didn't. The problem is that from the reviews that we had read, our expectations were raised very high but the rooms that we got were very bland and tired and so were a lot of things really. The pool area need a bit of an overhaul and even the beach was a little tatty. The redeeming feature were of course the staff. They were absolutely lovely and very attentive. The dining areas and the food were very good and we were also lucky with our fellow holiday makers.

During our second week we asked the Thomson rep to find us a room as the night time smell that decended became overwhelming. Regretfully, it seems nothing was done so we braved it out. But then, at the end of the holiday the reception staff asked us why we didn't accept the room that the Thomson rep had arranged for us in Position "A" at the very top of the hotel? The problem was that the rep never told us!! We were a little bit angry with the rep at this point but she was never to be seen again. Hey ho. Some you win and some you lose.

We managed to have a great time but we always tend to. Regretfully we will not be returning.

If you are going to Hotel Lindos Mare then avoid the lower room area around # 523 Or take your gas mask and cockroach wacker!!

Also, take a hair dryer!!!

P.S. As with the previous review.........the Beatles tripute band were sensational.

OK, so I think you've got the picture, everyone loves the Lindos Mare, and we also had a great holiday there the first 2 weeks in August. We booked with Thomson, which went without a hitch (flight food and comfort rubbish though, but we’re programmed to accept that).
Clearly the only choice of accommodation in the Lindos area is on Vlicha Beach which is far superior to the main Lindos beach. So if you're toying with choosing a hotel or apartment closer to the main village then don't. They may be a little cheaper and within walking distance of the bars and restaurants but you'll soon regret it once you've tackled the hill, pitied the donkeys, fought for a sun bed and played chicken with the taxis. The taxi drivers version of 'the knowledge', by the way, is 100 hours of mario cart and strict adherence of the rules that pedestrians must only be seen as obstacles and other road users are simply there to provide you with a formula 1 style slipstream which you must always take advantage of.
I could repeat everyone else’s praises for this hotel but I think you've already got the message. So instead here are some tips to help your stay and some of the annoying little things that the hotel could fix to make it closer to the high class it aspires to.
If you're overly conscious of the credit crunch, don't expect to be able to relax. Dishing out 10 euros each time you want a beer and fruit based drink for the lady wears a bit thin after a couple of nights. Stairs and lifts; yes there are a few, but it's on the steep face of a hill so if you want fantastic views and beach front location rolled into one then that's what you get, don't let the quirky layout distract you. My pet hate; it's 2009 and to get internet access you have to pay and use a cabled little desk in the corner, you can stroll through Lindos and get better wifi service for free. If you've brought a sherbet dib dab with you, don't leave it out, you'll return to your room to find it being marched out by resident ants, otherwise you shouldn't see them. Our room had a brilliant sea view, or it would have been if the triffids bordering our balcony hadn't got out of control, the rest of the fauna and upkeep in general was in good nick, rooms and communal areas clean and tidy. The beach, sea and free sun beds at the foot of the hotel are excellent, why bother getting up at 5 to put a towel on the pool beds. That said, we did use the lower pool a couple of days, which didn't seem to be included in the ridiculous and infuriating bed hogging antics.
I'm no fan of holiday routines, but this one worked a treat for us. On nights when entertainment is laid on, trade your dinner in for an a la carte dinner 24 euro voucher and stay at the hotel for the evening and when there's not, trade it in for the same discount on a lunch (which you can't use at the lower pool, annoying and inconvenient if you're having a beach day) and spend the evening in Lindos (12 euro round trip, 5 min each way, walking is for the brave or stupid only). We only tried the standard half board dinner once, maybe a bad night, maybe just not my scene, either way the mass market vibe didn't appeal and much better was to be had elsewhere. The quality divide between the normal and a la carte restaurant is massive (the 5ft waiter, Chris I think, was particularly good), along with the difference in price, but we found it worth it. Very good quality food and impressive views, probably better than can be found in Lindos even, on both counts.
There are mixed reviews of the entertainment. They're a varied bunch of tribute acts and to my surprise all quite good fun. The Drifters were good and a special mention has to go to The Beatles. I've got no point of reference, but they were by far the best Rhodes based, Norwegian, Beatles tribute act I’ve seen. Once I got past the fact that between songs Paul McCartney was a bit like Ricky Gervais doing a Borat impression, I thought they were witty, funny and sounded great. If you were watching them after having had a wedding there you'd be kicking yourself for not hiring them for your party.
In Lindos you could eat and drink in a different place every night. As is typical in Greece, the majority of eateries have the same choice of food stuffs which might as well be a national photocopy, not to say that’s inherently bad or they didn't vary in how they presented said nosh, but it does mean Ambrosia and Sinatra’s get a special mention for having menus with thought out dishes which for us, was much more enjoyable and with reasonable portion sizes (we always feel bad for leaving food when there seems to be a generosity competition at most places). The only place, not part of a hotel complex, that we found you could eat local to the Mare was a taverna on the beach, but you trade the smiles, greetings and service in for cheaper run of the mill food, I wouldn't bother for more than grabbing a beer. It's a similar situation in the neighbouring mini market, but in this case it's well worth ignoring the glum faces to save you a fortune by getting supplies and booze at a fraction of the cost. There’s also a plush looking restaurant called Azzuras or something, but we ventured there once to find it serving a buffet to residents in a similar fashion to the Mare, so not really any use to us. The attached bar was nice but continued the high pricing theme. Using the young fellas who stroll up and down the beach to get you an icy drink or snack from the hotel is a treat, but my wallet didn't agree.
Service in general at the hotel was good, but they could do better for the outgoing customers. I left moodier than usual when facing a trip home after we'd endured the sauna resembling shower room and inadequate changing facilities.

All in all the Lindos Mare is a good choice, the village fun and easy going and Vlicha beach excellent. I would recommend it to friends.

Finally, and weirdly, keep an eye out for the badgers on the red path level!

The Good:

Staff - excellent, we had a few problems and they sorted things in a pragmatic and efficient and friendly manner. Senior staff very good, quite a few trainees, but very friendly and helpful at all times. Probably the hotels biggest asset.
Location - Spectacular position at end of Vilcha bay. Great views. Easy access to beach.
5 minutes by taxi to Lindos (as cheap as bus for 4 and quicker) all arranged by hotel on request.
Food - Good choice, if not highest quality. If main courses not an option plenty of buffet. Fussy teenager did not go hungry.
Weather - Saw 5 clouds two days from end of 2 week holiday, 44c on one day.
entertainment - It is not grand shows but cosy evenings of music by reasonably good artists. Greek night good family fun with staff joining in.
Rooms - Clean, modern and generally comfortable.
Car Hire - Good service in hotel, cheaper than UK booked vehicles, all modern, mostly brand new and well maintained. No fuss, no rip off, good value. Hire a car and go see west of Island.
Hotel Shop - While not the cheapest it did provide low cost drinks and was open 7 days a week.

The Dissappointing:

Oversold by UK tour operator as a luxury boutiqe offering. It is a solid and unspectacular hotel. UK tour operators charging about 30% too much for half board / two week holiday. Tour operator Rep rarely about and ill informed of locality and opportunties. Went with Thompson A'la carte on basis we were going to be made to feel special, treated just like any other package tour cannon fodder in general and when on trips.
Hotel showing its age - buildings and some external decor needs a refurbishment.
Pool Area - Clearly been modernised in recent past but fixtures and fittings showing wear and tear. Not enough sun lounges and umbrellas for number of guests. there is plenty of decking, if they provided something like bean bags people could use the decking to sun bathe. But only having sun lounges led to people putting them on the decking and depleting the numbers elsewhere round the pool.
A'la Carte restraunt - not worth the money over normal restraunt and buffet. Better as a lunchtime bistro / cafe.
Tour operator and hotel advertise a kids club for under 12s - never saw any evidence of it despite looking and asking several times. daytime entertainment non-existant, you are on your own so make sure kids have books and usual electronic entertainment.

Tips:

Hotel is close to beach but use lifts if you struggle with steps.
Local shop is 250 yards away at bottom of hill. Cheaper than hotel shop but not much, on a hot day not worth walk / price difference for a bottle of water. Hotel shop sells water and pop, so no need to buy from expensive poolside bar. Hotel are pragmatic and helpful enough to provide glasses of ice and dont mind you drinking cheaper bottled stuff from shop.
Avoid organised trips to Rhodes old town - a rip off in every sense especially if including a meal. Just buy the bus ticket and organise yourself, plenty of resterants competing for your business and not as expensive as tour operators have you believe to persuade you onto their offers.
Lindos is best at night - plenty of food places, most offering rooftopviews of acropolis. worth doing at least once but pick bistro carefully as quality patchy.
St Pauls bay - very hot (no wind), steep hill, very busy so go early but worth at least one stop over. Monolithos worth a stop if out and aboutin a car, spectacular views and peaceful. Prosinisi at southern tip also worth a visit for beach, Lighthouse bistro / bar good value and food not bad at all, gets windy.

The Lindos Mare is a truely special hotel. My partnet had visited Lindos before with friends but had always stayed in apartments. I hate flying have not been on many holidays so it was important to me to stay somewhere nice. I chose the Lindos Mare after reading the great reviews on this site and I can honestly say it did not dissopoint.
We had a junior suite which was well worth the extra £150. It was very spacious, moder and bright. The room had everything we could need and had a very boutique hoytel feel ti it. We had a balcony with a very picturesque see view.
The hotel itself is run very well and has a main resturant downstairs and an al a cart upstairs. I reccomend the al a cart as the veiws are amazing and the food is first class.
Just a tip you can swap yourlunch/evening meal vouchers over so if you fancy dinnner out in Lindos (which I also reccomend) you can swap your evening meal voucher for a lunch voucher. Also if you miss any meals ask reception to check as you can reclaim this vouchers against meals and also the al a cart!
We spent most of our days on the beach as it is so well kept and the sea is very warm. The hotel has two pools one large and a smaller one. We preffered the smaller one although they are both lovely.
There is evening entertainment whoch we enjoyed, Beatles tribute and a Abba tribute. But do have a few nights out in Lindos a taxi costs around 5 euros and there are lovely roof top resturants and bars. We had allot of great nights out there!!!!!!
Overall we loved our holiday and Lindos and the Lindos Mare Hotel made it very special indeed. We hope to come back next year and do it all over again.

My daughter and I stayed here at the end of July for a Mother and daughter week after she and broken up from her teaching job. We booked with First Choice and flew with Thomsons from Luton. All went well with the flight but it did seem a long way in a small seated plane! Arrival all smooth and out within minutes to a waiting coach - the journey took over an hour which was too long for the distance we had to go.

Too late to eat when we arrived but we were given a voucher to use for lunch on our last day. Room was a family suite and was large, well positioned and good. Problems arrived during the night when the air conditioner kept going off and then re-starting. In the morning I went to reception to tell them about it and consequently we moved later that day further down the hotel to the same class of room but a bit older and smaller. It did, however, have a lovely view, more shady and quieter and near the bottom pool and beach.

All the staff dealt with it amazingly well. We liked the small bottom pool and the beach - the sea was wonderful, safe and warm. On the beach are free sunbeds and umbrellas. There was some towel saving on the beds at the pools and beach but we always managed to find somewhere.

Drinks etc at the hotel are expensive so many people went to the little shop down the road and stocked up with these and also bits for lunch to eat on the balcony. If on half board one can swop dinner for a lunch voucher for 12 euros each on food (not drinks). We did this twice and then tooka taxi to Lindos and Pefkos for an evening meal. Liked Lindos but wouldn't go back to Pefkos!

Breakfast at the hotel was great, plenty of choice and amounts - not sure where some people put it all!! Dinner was also fine but didn't enjoy the overcrowding in the restaurant and the tables being so close together. Certainly wouldn't have liked that if on honeymoon..... Most evenings there is some entertainment in the bar area eg Abba tributes etc and Greek night. Starts around 9.30 and ends by 12.00.

Very clean hotel, very happy staff and very good value if on halfboard. Not good if you want to go out each evening to different restaurants and for walks.

...This has to be one of the greatest holidays of our lives. I went with my girlfriend for 10 days and stayed in Lindos Mare. As soon as we drove into the entrance the view took our breath away. Check-in was flawless, quick and efficient. Shown to our room and again we had massive smiles on our faces. The room was big, airy, fully air-conditioned, modernly designed, so clean and the the balcony had the best view you could ever wish for...completely overlooking the bay, you could sit there for ages looking at it.
The food in the hotel was really good too...we stayed half board which means we got breakfast which is served to a generous 10.30am and dinner. Both meals are varied to everybody's contentment. There's food for meat lovers, fish lovers, vegetarians, traditional greek cuisine, western alternatives...its all there. The staff that serve are outstanding.
Never have I been to a hotel where they are more dedicated to ensuring you have a great time. From the porter staff, to the serving staff and especillay to Michalis the Maitre'd who has a constant smile on his face when talking and getting to know every guest that stays there. Entertainment is provided in the pool bar 2-3 times a week which is also varied and lots of fun every night there's something on.
The location is perfect as well. Just 3 minute drive to Lindos (we hired a car and I suggest you do the same) and miles away from the touristy nightmare that is Faliraki. Lindos is great for nights out and taxi's are quick and efficient and don't rip you off.
The pool (the top one - there are 2!) as you can clearly see from photos is perfect. Lots of deck chairs, beautiful setting, perfect water and so so relaxing.
The beach is literally at the bottom of the hotel via some steps. There are many levels and the layout is a bit strange but as its built into a cliffside it's always going to be but it only adds to the uniqueness of the hotel. Beach service is given by the staff so you can order lunch/drinks straight from your free sun lounger on the beach.
I can't express any more how much we enjoed it here. The only negative thing was the fact that we had to leave.
If you choose any hotel to stay in Rhodes then choose Lindos Mare, you won't regret it.
