“Avra - superb peaceful location”
Reviewed November 16, 2010

We stayed at Avra for a week during late October. We had room 9 which is located in the larger block over Panos' taverna/bar right on the main beach. We had a fabulous view as no.9 is situated at the end of a long shared terrace and overlooks the sea with the Acropolis located to the right - we were very happy with the views to say the least!!!

The accomodation itself consisted of 2 beds within a room containing the kitchenette area and table and then a second room with a further 2 beds with the bathroom off this room. When we arrived the fridge had been defrosted and water had leaked onto the floor, however Kelly the Olympic rep was very helpful. Once I turned the fridge back up, it was fine. Kitchen equipment was a bit random & basic as per usual in Greek s/c apartments but everything was clean. Beds were fine, mattresses were good, ours looked pretty new. Linen was clean but a little tired looking and both hand & bath towels provided. Bathroom was pretty pokey and dark, a few of the fittings again were looking tired and needing replacing. Hand shower, shower tray and shower curtain had all seen better days. Hot water took a long time to come through but when it did it was scorching!!! This might not be the case in high season however, there was only a handful of people in our block so it was fine this time of year.

Maria was our very friendly maid, cleaned everyday except Sunday as is the norm. Linen changed once.

As it was quiet, I took my chance to look at the other apartments which all seemed to vary in size and layout - some being mezzanine style i.e with beds on a wooden platform accessed by steep wooden staircase. Below us were some studios probably for 2-3, these are the ones that look directly onto a wall and have a little terrace in front of each one, I would not be so keen to have one of these but you are so close to the beach that you could just escape there if you wanted to. There are a further 2 blocks A & B which are set back. Again I think there are studios on the lower floors which have a terrace outside each room, some are shared. The higher floor apartment sare better with balconies, I looked at B5 as it was being cleaned ready for new people and this looked good, block B is the last block. I also believe that there are 2 apartments for up to 4 above next door taverna Nefeli.

This location is very peaceful at night, well it was in October anyhow, it took us about 10mins to walk into the village each night. We personally did not find the hill that bad (we live in Bath where there are hills everywhere!!), our previous Greek holiday was in Lourdas, Kefalonia and OMG the hill there is steep, Lindos was nothing compared to that!!!

I would recommend this place primarily for the location, it is great, the apartments are quite basic and could do with updating, but we found them totally adequateand acceptable for our needs. I will add some photos soon to show the overall picture!

The Avra studios are basic and could do with updating, however the location more than makes up for this. I stayed in August and it was great to be a stone's throw away from the beach when the temperature was 40 degrees. Despite being right next to the beach, the rooms are quiet, relaxing and friendly. It takes about 10 minutes up a steep hill to get to Lindos Village or longer if you go up via the main road.

The Apartments have very basis equipment, just a kettle, two rings and a fridge. The cleaning was poor and the cleaner seemed to do little more than empty the bin, we had an upstairs, which she never went near all week. Air conditioning is available for 50 euros per week.

I would go back to Avra and would always go for an apartment as there are two studios (rooms 10 and 11) which are on the walkway to the beach and the view is of a brick wall.

The village of Lindos itself is full of rooftop restaurants and lively bars and is a great place to go with friends or as a couple. Acropolis was our favorite restaurant. The Courtyard, Appollo, Dreams and Socrates bars were all lively and friendly.

Love Lindos and have been there a couple of times , this accomodation was without a doubt the worst I have ever had in Greece , it was dirty and although the cleaner did visit each day , she only emptied the bin and nothing else , the shower was awful with water comin through only two holes on the shower head - the way I got round that was to use it with out the head !! but having said all that , the location was fantastic , they were pratically on the beach , the beach was beautiful , possibly could have been cleaner but a certain amount of responsibility is with the holiday makers - why do people leave rubbish on the beach ? the taverna on the beach run by Alex was well good , lovely food and resonably priced ( as far as prices go in Rhodes ) - went with Olympic and have to say that the rep was close to useless and I would never use them again but like I say I had a fantastic time and met some nice people

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Avra, it was as described on the Olympic Holidays website, and perfectly located for the relaxing short break we needed. As with many apartments in Greece, the owners are not on site and there is no reception area or staff, all queries are dealt with by holiday company reps. We stayed in Room 3 which is in the block nearest the beach. The apartments were clean enough if you are not too zealous about these things. On the downside they were a little shabby and in need of some TLC. The maid visited each day but did little more than empty the bins and run a mop around the floor. However if we weren't ready for her to clean the room she didn't come back later on, it was left till the next day .
Our block consisted of some rooms on the ground floor - beach level (I think there were three) with a garden area but no view, and above those on the first floor (ground floor - road level)were around 10 apartments, mostly 4 bedded - I'll start by describing these.... Rooms1, 2 and 3 are on the first floor on the front of the block nearest to and overlooking the beach (it was about 20 steps down to the beach) with a large shared terrace (chairs, a table and a clothes airer are provided outside every room). Room 4 is at 90 degrees to the beach at the side of the block, the terrace for this room doubles up as the path to rooms 1, 2 and 3. Then there were three rooms at the back of the block, with a shared terrace overlooking the hill up to the village, then on the fourth side of the building were the next three or four rooms with a large shared terrace, one end overlooking the beach and the other sides overlooking the hill up towards the village, and beneath these rooms were the lower ground floor rooms I spoke of earlier. These rooms also looked towards the other blocks of the Avra which we didn't visit.
The apartments themselves were a reasonable size and a mix of either single storey or split level rooms. Ours (room 3) had a few steps down to a kitchen area (not much in the way of any equipment but we were only interested in having a fridge to store drinks in as we always eat out each night on holiday, what's the point of being on holiday if you have to cook and worse still, wash up!?!?), and a separate shower room with wc and basin. On the ground floor was a wardrobe, desk and chairs, and two single beds. There was a steep wooden staircase up to a mezzanine level with two more single beds and another wardrobe.
The only worry I would have is with small children as all the floors are tiled, there were no handles down the steps into the kitchen/shower room area, and the stairs to the upper level were steep, so I would be concerned having children there under the age of about 6 or 7, or children who regularly get up in the night as there were too many hard edges to slip and bang yourself on for my liking, and the stairs to the upper floor were very steep (I found it easier to come down them backwards). However for adults (including drunk ones - oops!) or older children it was fine.
The Avra couldn't be closer to the beach, which is lovely. There are a handful of beach tavernas, of the ones we tried none of them really shone in terms of food quality unfortunately, but they were adequate.
The Avra is at the bottom of the hill, Lindos village is spread up the hill, and then all the more modern hotels and apartments with pools are at the top of the hill. Lindos village is just a ten minute uphill walk away (free bus service every half hour during the daytime). Although it was very pleasantly warm during the evenings in mid-October when we were there I would always be sweating due to the humidity by the time we had walked up the hill to the edge of the village for our evenings out. Luckily there was nearly always a welcome breeze over the village square so I would spend the first few minutes of each night out trying to cool off in the breeze before continuing to the bars and restaurants.
We had fantastic food almost every night in the village, we prefer authentic food wherever we travel, which it mostly was, and it was always freshly cooked. The restaurants here seemed to take care in their service and food quality more so than many holiday areas, and luckily it wasn't assumed that because we were British we would want chips with every meal (what a relief!). It was easy to avoid takeaways and fast food establishments as there were so many nice restaurants with varying prices. Most restaurants had roof terraces which was fantastic because they had wonderful views across the village and the Acropolis would be lit up, and it was slightly cooler up there, sometimes there was even a tiny (and very welcome) breeze.
We found the Avra and Lindos to be exactly what we needed for a last minute relaxing getaway, and will be going back there again , very probably this year.

If you are looking for basic budget accomodation right on the beach, then the Avra is ideal. However the rooms are looking a little tired and could do with some maintenance.
I stayed in room B2 which is a ground level studio with three beds, the room was cleaned every morning..... ie a very quick run around with a mop to move the sand around that inevitably collects on the floor as the pathways between the three blocks are a sand and grit mixture, adequate provision of towels considering I was staying alone. Missing drawer in one of the bedroom tables, and more importantly from a safety aspect, got quite an electrical jolt off the bathroom mirror light fitting which had a missing bulb situated very close to the shower, so I always showered with the light switch turned off at the bathroom door . I mentioned this safety issue with Sara the Olympic Rep, who found it quite amusing saying something like, "Oh well its Greece isn't it" In fairness though I did say to her that because I was aware of the problem, I could live with it but please get it fixed before the next guests arrive.

The Avra has three blocks all with Olympic, the first adjoining the beach front taverna the ground level ones not to be recommended, as some have an ugly wall right in front of them and no view. The second block "A" are fine and have garden and beach views, the third block "B" is the best of the three, especially upstairs apartment "B5" which has a nice view of the Acropolis

In summary : The Avra is OK if you are looking for budget beach side accommodation in Lindos, although could do with a bit of updating and maintenance. I've stayed in a lot worse in Greece.

We traveled as part of a large party for a wedding, other members of the party stayed up in the town. Our apartment was very basic but by far the best location right on the beach.
The Bar Nefeli by the apartments has to have the slowest service I have ever had don't go here if you want a quick drink! Yanis bar in the town and the Acropolis Resteraunt give great service and great food. I would return again it was a great relaxing holiday.

Stayed in the Avra apartments from 29th July for 2 weeks. It is quite literally on the beach - just a few footsteps from the apartment you'll find the beautiful clear waters of the main beach. The apartments were basic but clean - we stayed in a studio which slept 2/3 and it was very spacious. We were in an upper level apartment in B block, and had a large terrace with views over the sea. The self-catering facilities left a lot to be desired though - a couple of hobs and a fridge which froze everything you put in it (the setting couldn't be changed) and a random selection of cutlery. No toaster or kettle either! But we ate out a lot anyway, so it was fine for what we wanted. Our apartment was BOILING - so no way we could manage without air-con! This is 50euro a week, which you pay to the maid. The maid is very friendly and cleans daily - although our towels were only changed 3 times whilst we were there!
The village of lindos is about a 10/15 min walk up hill from the apartments - but there is a free bus that runs daily at half-past every hour (last one at 6.30pm). The same free bus goes every 10mins from the main square in the village (where it drops from the beach - looks more like a make-shift roundabout than a square!) up to the top of the hill, above the village, to Krana. This is where the main bus station is, where you can get the local bus to other resorts such as Pefkos or Rhodes Town. We considered doing this until we saw how packed it was and changed our minds! Near the bus station you will also find a couple of supermarkets (although the ones in the centre of the village are better) and also a couple of swimming pools that are open to everyone - as long as you use the pool bar - even for a bottle of water etc.
We spent our second week at the pool owned by the 'Krana Apartments' - which is up some stone steps next to the supermarkets/restaurants. It was a beautiful pool with a reasonably priced snack bar and friendly staff. We had spent the first week on the beach but noticed that the heat was more bearable at the top of the hill - with more of a breeze - so opted for a change of scenery using the free bus. The beach itself is just lovely though... Sandy with plenty of sunbeds - costing 8euro a day for 2 with an umbrella. The sea is calm and clear and there are a few watersports available further round the bay.
Every evening we walked up into the village, where you'll find an abundance of restaurants with pretty roof terraces over looking the town. The bars/restaurants all look very traditionally greek - old and pretty - from the outside but are very contemporary and cosmopolitan inside! We tried lots of places and had great meals most nights, but would definitely recommend Dionysos as a favourite and steer clear of Mythos (on the square) - by far our worst meal and we were both ill. Most restaurants offer lots of choice and the average main meal is about 8-9euro - we would often have pitta & dips to start, a couple of greek main dishes/pasta dishes/meat dishes, half a carafe of wine and a large water - this would be around 30-40euro. I loved the food here and certainly felt you got value for money. Also was often tempted by the many crepe places in the village - the smell draws you in and they are delicious!
The village by day is also beautiful. Little winding streets and plenty of shops. You will see lots of donkey's giving people rides around town as there is no access for cars through the village (felt sorry for them though because it's so hot!). Everywhere is immaculate inside and out - they take great pride in this historical little village and it's great to see. It does however get very busy during the day as all the tourists from the rest of rhodes descend on Lindos to go the Acropolis. We also visited this - a tough walk up lots of stairs in the sun - but well worth the views at the top.
We went on a couple of day trips - I recommend booking them with one of the agents in the village as the ones through your rep (we travelled with olympic) are far more pricey and go with the same excursion people anyway. Rhodes by night was a great trip - 14euro for a return coach to Rhodes Town for the whole evening - it just picks you up and drops you between the new and old towns and you do your own thing. We explored the old town which was amazing and definitely worth as visit. Lots of history there and the harbor is well worth a look - very pretty at night. We also did an island tour, which took us to lots of villages along the west of the island - where we tasted locally produced honey and wine, went to the seven springs, ancient city ruins and the valley of the butterflies. It was a very interesting day - but quite pricey and a lot of walking involved which can be difficult in the heat of the day!
All in all, Lindos is a fantastic place and I would love to return one day. The Avra aparts are good value in a great location - although if I went again (and had a bit more money!) I think I'd be tempted to stay at the Krana apartments - as this too was a great location with the added benefit of a pool. But for beach lovers - you can't get any closer than the avra and they are such a bargain!
