I would have enjoyed a stroll over this impressive construction so much more if it hadn't been for the icy wind and rain (April!). A walk around the mid-stream island would also have been nice on a good day. Weather aside, it's well worth seeing and imagining the hoards of traders and travellers pouring into Emerita Augusta.

The Roman Bridge in Mérida is the longest surviving bridge from ancient times and it currently features 60 spans for a total length of more than 700 meters. In my opinion, it's not as beautiful as Segovia's Roman bridge, but it's certainly stunning and deserves a 5 stars rating.

The bridge connected the two banks of the Guadiana river and ended in the ancient city walls, where a Moorish fortress was later built (the Alcazaba), contributing to the overall beauty and uniqueness of place.

The bridge and its surroundings, including the river banks, have been restored and are very well maintained. You can have a walk along the bridge, or even in the well maintained pathways along the river banks.

Since the river is oriented along the East-West axis, you can admire beautiful dawns and sunsets from the bridge itself. If you're an amateur photographer, you can get a lot out of your camera.

We suggest you drop by during dawn or twilight or late night with clear skies. The view of the river and the Alcazar is sure to impress.
