“A reasonable crash pad but not 5 star”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

It did not help that we were given a large smoking room with dual aspect windows at the rear of the hotel (despite specifying NS on reservation) and then moved to a small internal room with a window into the room from a seating area in a corridor. At least the smell was better. The beds were uncomfortable, and they tried to charge us for parking which had been included as free when booking via expedia. To be fair the receptionist sorted it out once it had been raised, and we did not eat in the restaurant a sit seemed a little soulless, so I cannot comment on the food

Room Tip: remind them of your smoking preferences at check in !

As with a lot of European towns, the hotels with the best (most convenient) location are a bit difficult to find and this one is no exception. Nonetheless you eventually find your way there. The hotel is old but in reasonably good repair and has a nice charm about it. Our room was large, at the back of the hotel, quiet and comfortable. We did like the room layout with separate doors to toilet, bedroom and bathroom. Beds were a bit hard but we didn't mind that. Breakfast was part of our package and I though it one of the better ones we had experienced. Good variety of hot and cold dishes, pastries, cereals, fruit and strong coffee. Only negative was a not particularly helpful reception who also overcharged us for parking we did not use. The square the hotel is located on is a delight at night-time when the locals come out to eat and play. Numerous good restaurants and cafes nearby. We had visited Merida for the theatre festival held in the old Roman ampitheatre. An unforgettable experience and only matched by visiting all of the Roman ruins throughout the town. A wonderful unique place we would love to visit again.

In a great location. Staff very friendly. Room is good but one or two things need repair and decor needs updating. Valet parking is a bonus. Breakfast is ok. Had an enjoyable stay. Did not eat dinner so cannot comment on this.

This hotel is set in an historic building, with a breath taking interior. Right in the middle of town, it is ideally sited for visitors to the city.
Accommodation is very good, but be aware that the beds are extremely hard!!
Overall excellent value for money, but I would rate it 4 star as a posed to 5 star.

I have stayed at this hotel in May.
This beautiful palace transformed in a lovely hotel, right on the main square.
The location is perfect; the rooms are very comfortable and spotless. The staffs at the front desk were helpful with information given.
A place I recommend.

Only one person on reception - we had to ask about time of breakfast and location.
The next door church bells chime every 15 mins night and day.
The noise+blasting music from passing cars directly outside + families with screaming kids + skatboarders directly infront of the hotel goes on until 2.00am weekdays and if you are at the front of the hotel the double glazing does not protect you.
Apart from the mould in the mini bath/shower, dust, cobwebs, being given a smoking room where the beds smelt of smoke, the smoke alarm being switched off, and an old TV with no English channel( like all the other numerous Spanish hotel we have stayed at).
If you are deaf, a smoker, dirty and don't mind the possibility of being burnt to death then you should enjoy a front room in this hotel - the cost per night and the star rating are well inflated.
Over the past years (5 this year) we have stayed in numerous hotel at approx. the same price and this bears no comparison to any way.

Room Tip: Quieter rooms at the back on the opposite side of the adjacent church - the higher the better - non...

We had a wonderful, friendly and very professional welcome from our receptionist Rebecca, which was a particularly good start to our stay.

Our room was spacious, attractive and extremely comfortable with an enormous bed and we were fortunate to be on the quiet side of the hotel away from Merida's lively Plaza Espana, where local families can gather and enjoy themselves until quite late at night.

The hotel has its own restaurant and large and comfortable bar/lounge area with friendly bar staff. Unfortunately (and unusually for Spain) the bar closed at midnight so the chance of a late drink after a night out was limited.

Much has been made in some reviews here and elsewhere about the hotel's mock Roman interior. Whilst I can see that it wouldn't be to everyone's taste, nevertheless it is quite well done and a brave effort to restore the building and give the hotel a style of its own in keeping with the Roman history around it.

The hotel is perfectly located a short walk from all bars and restaurants and close enough to all the Roman ruins.

I agree with another reviewer that it was a pity the rooftop terrace and pool was closed, in our case during mid June. As it turned out Merida was in the middle of an unusually cold spell so we didn't miss the facility too much - however, it is worth checking first if a pool is a must for you.

We had only booked to stay for one night but wish we could have stayed longer.

Room Tip: Rooms in the centre or at the back of the hotel, away from Plaza Espana, will be significantly quiet...
