Paradors are always special places. But they also used to serve great food and provide excellent service. Sadly not any more.
This parador would be much better served if it provided less variety but of a higher quality at the breakfast buffet. Put out one or two good quality freshly cooked pastries eg, not four tasteless soggy ones. What happens is people choose one, take a mouthful, realise its cheap and poor quality and try another one, only to leave it also on the plate. I am sure the Parador would actually save money if it adopted this policy as the wastage at breakfast was awful as the food was so poor.
We did not eat dinner here having experience poor food at other paradors also.
My other complaint with this parador is that when I went to pay my bill they automatically translated the amount from euros to pounds without asking me. This being done ( of course) at a poor rate and to the advantage of the Parador.

So, in conclusion, a lovely place to stay in but do not eat there. And just take care when paying your bill.

Like many Paradors, the one at Merida is an old building carefully converted into an hotel. We are great admirers of the whole principle of Paradors - conserving ancient buildings - but the solution to falling occupancy in face of Spain's economic woes is not best served by increasing prices!
Normally a south-north drive through Spain would be three nights and all of them in Paradors - but with prices escalating, we spent just one night in a Parador, that of Merida.
This one is well positioned, just above the central Plaza Espana and close to pretty well everything. Merida is a small city but has more Roman remains - some spectacular - than all of the UK's Roman architecture put together. It makes the city a mecca for Roman researchers and those who admire this type of architecture.
We found, however, the inside of the Parador somewhat tired, a little drab and the bathroom of our spacious room definitely so. The restaurant was of a decent standard and wines not too expensive. The pool was certainly looking its age.

Room Tip: Ask for the front left-hand side of the building as you look at it.

Another night at this city centre hotel which we love....from the airconditioned garage to the quaint rooms to the diing room and back to the garage to leave!!

Reception were very helpful and gave us a spacious bedroom with wonderful bathroom.....despite their being no bathtowels that took two phone calls and 30 mninutes to get.

After a coooling bath it was time for a drink and down stairs we went only to wait 30 full minutes for one to arrive despite the one staff on duty telling us he would be with us soon. It was not his fault as he was the only one working there and had just too many clients seeking service.

These two gripes aside, the hotel is thoroughly worthy of a visit to enjoy its positon, its rooms and its dining which was superb.

We will be back the next time we go down South!!

Room Tip: We had one on the second floor and maybe given a larger one as my wife needs a wheelchair...

The common spaces are OK though there isn't much atmosphere, our room was on the crappy side: small, with a small, barred window (why was it barred? we were on the 2nd floor!) and the shower leaked like a sieve. Beds were small and not very comfortable, the a/c was extremely noisy. Do your research carefully - not all paradors are the same. This one is definitely on the shabby side. Convenient to the Roman ruins but that's about the only positive thing I can say about it.

Luxury. One of the more modern style hotels we stayed in in Spain. Stopping point for guided tours having lunch. Very nice, though expensive restaurant. Convenient to bus station ( 5 euro taxi ride). Near the most complete Roman remains I have ever seen (barring the Colosseum in Rome). However the amphitheater here was more accessible than in Rome. No areas blocked off.

This Parador was the third one we stayed in during our trip to Spain. Although the location was ideal and having easy parking as a bonus, we felt the Parador was a little tired. As a previous reviewer has said there are many corridors and our room was someway from the main reception. Our room was clean and the bathroom was spacious but the air-con didn't seem to reduce the temperature too much, for at times the outside temperature was 37c.

Our snack lunch in the bar was fine and the coolest place in the hotel. We didn't eat in the hotel in the evening so we cannot comment on the food.

Probably if we were visiting Merida again we would choose a different hotel
