“Well worth the visit”

Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Guadalupe

The only problem is you must go on a guided tour in Spanish and at certain times. The upside is you get to see 'behind the scenes', the sacristy, some interesting exhibits in the museum, a personal audience with 'La Virgen' (if you're into that). It takes an hour...

This is a pilgrimage site for Catholics filled with a vast collection of historical artifacts. The monastery was built on the site where the Black Virgin was found. Due to the Virgin's importance, over the century's the monastery received many priceless artifacts most of which are on display. There is an entrance fee; purchase tickets in the book store. The only down side is that the tour is guided in Spanish only and all of the printed information is in Spanish only. If you read-up before going it is not too big a problem. We certainly enjoyed this culmination of our trip through the Provence of Extremadura.

The building is remarkable and holds some truly delightful works of art particularly the Zurbaran's. What is a significant let down is the tour that is very pushy and totally uncompromising in pushing you around as fast as possible. When you have come from the other side of the world to see a building to be forced around without being allowed to fully appreciate it was frustrating to say the least.

This may seem off the beaten track, but it is certainly well worth it. The views of the monastery from afar are majestic. This does set the scene for your level of expectation.
The tours of the monastery are from 0930 till 1200 and 1530 till 1800. You can decide not to take the tour, however you do miss a lot of rooms. The tour allows you to view the different rooms, one room that you visit contains the gold embroidered cassocks another contains music scores that were scribed at the monastery. All of these are only visible if you take the tour as these are stored behind locked doors. On the tour you are also taken to the vestry and into an area where the black Virgin is located. Definitely a site not to be missed.
