“Great Pool”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2006

Have just returned from a 1 week holiday at the Grand Hotel. Thought the hotel was a bit jaded but had a good clean room with fresh towels daily and bed linen changed mid week. Food at the hotel was good some days and not so good other days but in general there was always a large selection and you never went hungry. Must say though that we arrived mid-week and a large number of Italians arrived on the Friday/Saturday and the food improved greatly but you had to make sure you were in the restaurant earlier to make sure you got the best selection.

Very disappointed with the surrounding area though. The village was littered with debris and the stench from un-emptied bins on the way down to the beach from the main road was awful. The beach itself was not too bad but we did find a syringe lying amongst the shells. Some of the buildings around the hotel were derelict and the area had a look of what I would imagine Beirut looks like at present. Did not feel very safe walking around in the day time so did not venture from the hotel in the evenings.

The pool area was very good with a lovely large pool and two smaller pools for the children. The pool was lovely and clean and their were ample sunbeds which were not cramped togehter.

The evening entertainment was basic but on the first few nights we joined in and had some fun. After the arrival of the Italian guests however we felt excluded from the entertainment as they played Italian "games" every night. The girl behind the terrace bar was very good and always very helpful and smiling, as was the Pizza man.

Luckily we met some lovely people and their company made the holiday.

  • Liked — Decent sized room with balcony and air conditioning
  • Disliked — Location - many derelict buildings and lots of street peddlars/beggars
  • Tips/Secrets — OK if you are not fussy about the surrounding area.

Visited this hotel again in May with my two children and once again had a great holiday.

Hotel and grounds clean and well presented, staff extremely helpful and polite, food varied and plentiful, rooms spotless and well maintained and the trips as usual excellent.

The surrounding area even seems to have improved since last year and on a walkabout outside in no way did we feel intimidated by the locals - in fact all were very friendly.

People on this site should stop moaning about chips, eggs and bacon - this is Italy and we love it for what it has to offer.

Looking forward to returning once more.

I cannot believe that the hotel described in the review '"(4* think not!!!)"
Apr 28, 2006: A TripAdvisor Member, west midlands' is the same hotel that I have just returned from !!
I had researched the hotel and area before I went and knew that the surrounding area does need some work doing on it. But there is no way I felt threatened to walk out - I went out several times on my own both day and night and found the locals quite charming.

As for the food 'bland' I think not !!!!
Each lunchtime and dinnertime you could choose from an antipasto table ( which changed daily with such things as salads, stuffed aubergine, pizza, octopus, tiger prawns, Russian Salad, rices, etc etc; then there was a different homemade soup with each meal and a huge dish or fresh parmesan if you wanted some, there was also a delicious different pasta dish with each meal. So now we could have had three courses - then there was the hot foods with a choice of 3 different ones each mealtime - usually one of them being fish. ( Veal, pork, beef, lamb chicken even rabbit one night !!) Lovely and unusual vegetables and potatoes ( I will agree that they served chips quite frequently but this is there attempt to placte the Brits !! - my son doesn't usually eat chips but loved those as they were cooked in olive oil and were seasoned with local herbs) There was also a salad bar with bowls of pickled vegs, olives, beetroot, grated carrots, lettuce etc.
For dessert there was always a huge basket of fresh fruit , bowls of pineapple, peaches and pears, various Italian cakes or desserts and always a freezer with lots of choices of ice cream. Both red and white wine and water was available in whatever amounts you needed and the huge baskets were continually topped up with beautiful Italian bread.
For breakfast there were plates of cheeses, meat, jams, honey, bread, prunes, cereals, and yogurts. Again to placate the Brits the cooked breakfast is not what we think of as an English breakfast - but for goodness sake we were in Italy !!! They don't have our British bacon and sausages !!!
The hotel itself was clean and comfortable, the pools were lovely, there was pool, crazy golf, football and tennis available and the nightly entertainment was adequate.
As for the hoards of barking dogs - they must have all been shot when I went !!!!
Myself and my family would all return again, the only problem we had was with moaning British guests with such comments as 'people in the area don't speak English', the look of disdain as they looked at the food ( I must add here that these people all came back with overloaded plates that they finished and went back for more !, and then the lady who went round all the tables showing people her food for 20 minutes and then complaining it was cold !!!!

We enjoyed this holiday with Shearings, But we are afraid some brits are spoiling it because they expect English food etc, well we go abroad to live the life of the people we visit, if we wanted English everything we would stay in Britain. An excellent Hotel.

I have just returned from another stay with my children at the Pinetamare and we have had a wonderful time.
As on our previous visits, the hotel inside and out is spotlessly clean and the gardens are beautifully maintained. The staff are friendly and helpful and particularly good with the children - you are never made to feel that they are a nuisance which means that you can relax yourself.
I have to say that I feel that the surrounding area has improved since last year, certainly there is a lot less litter and the locals were always keen to chat whenever we ventured out. The beach was also clean and tidy.
Food wise, once again, the pasta is excellent. There is a different variety every night and we didn't have a portion that we didn't enjoy. There was always plenty of choice (different meat and fish every night) and I can report that all of the food was hot! One night there was a particularly good oven roasted chicken cooked with garlic and tomatoes which just fell off the bone.We were too early this year for the pizza man, but I understand that he is starting on June 1st.
The trips were again well organised and Viv, the rep at the hotel, does a fantastic job, having time for everyone and being endlessly patient!
One tip I would give is to take plenty of reading material if you like to read when on holiday, as English books and magazines are not sold locally.
Once again, we look forward to going back next year..

Just arrived home from staying at the Grand Hotel in Pinetamare. This is definately NOT a 4* hotel. The food was cold and re-cycled into other meals every meal time. We had chips for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food was really bland and basic. We were expecting to have Italian meals or at least 4* food, but the food was 2*. I complained to the rep that the food was cold and terrible and she said that the Italians liked their food warm and they thought that we loved chips?. There was music at the hotel every night, but the musician played the same songs every night and they were played so loud that you couldn't hear each other talk. We were woken most nights by the packs of stray dogs that were barking continuously through the night. The surrounding area is dirty and there are prostitutes walking up and down the road at night. We went for a walk along the beach and saw syringes left lying on the sand and there was rubbish everywhere. Most of the holiday makers at the hotel were afraid to go out because gangs of youths were hanging about. This certainly was not the holiday I expected and I will not be going back again!!!

We have just returned from a 14 night All Inclusive holiday to the Grand Hotel. We were 4 adults and have travelled all over the world, but found this hotel to be excellent value compared with some others we have been to.

Ok the surrounding area is not as smart as Sorrento etc. but they are working on cleaning it up. The rep told us to go out and meet the locals, and thats what we did. We found them to be really helpfull and even at night did not feel threatened. In fact the area came alive at night and some of the more untidy areas were hidden in the dark. This made the town look and feel better.

The meals in the hotel were excellent, lunch and dinner had plenty of choice, one of our party is a fussy eater, but she found something she liked at every meal. The out door pizza man (by the pool) made the best pizza's we have tasted in his traditional oven, so that was always an alternative option.

While we were there the owners were staying, they have had the hotel since May 05, and we chatted extensively to Ross and his wife, who told us some of their plans for the future. We were very impressed with them and we will be looking next year to see whats been done. Things like an Al-a-carte upgrade option, with reserved sunbeds, seperate roof top restaraunt etc. sounded great to us.

Our only complaint to him were the lack of a decent breakfast (I know europeans love ham etc. but chips..). We felt that if baked beans and toast were supplied we could forgo the chips! Otherwise as I said the meals were very good.

While we were staying, the Italians were the main benificiary of the entertainment. They seem to have a dance routine for every record that was played! This was always around the pool bar, and being served with drinks in plastic glasses, and sitting on plastic chairs is not always what we wanted. Again the owner told us that the inside piano bar will be opening, when he sorts out staff issues, so there will be somewhere nice to sit in the evenings.

The organised trips were good value, but we felt that a full itinery should have been given, so we could have seen how long we stopped in places like Sorrento, Naples etc. As it was we felt we were not given enough time for shopping etc, and the ladies needed this due to the lack of variety in the shops at Pinetamare.

Once again, I must say that for value for money this hotel cannot be beaten as long as you take it for what and where it is, and appreciate whats being done to make it a lot better! We will go again.
