Hotel Antares
Ranked #4 of 11 Hotels in Letojanni
Reviewed May 9, 2014

We stayed here one night as part of a one-week auto-tour of Sicily, the hotel having been selected for us by our French tour operator, FRAM, through their Italian intermediary, Aeroviaggi. Yet again this was not a hotel that was easy to find as neither my sat nav nor Google maps recognised the address we were given. Furthermore, the Hotel Antares has now merged with the Hotel Olimpo just above it so we ended up taking the funicular 'lift' from the Antares reception area to check in at the Hotel Olimpo reception desk. We were allocated a spacious and well-appointed terraced room with spectacular views of the sea below. All in all our stay was comfortable and the breakfast was one of the best we had in any of the six hotels we stayed at in Sicliy. The reception staff were friendly, spoke good English and generally helpful. However, I was disappointed that they did not offer free wi-fi (as had been the case in every other hotel we stayed at during the week). In fact they were charging 6 euros an hour for internet access which I thought was extortionate! The hotel has good facilities (I even had a haircut there) and is well-situated for visits to the beautiful nearby hill village of Taormina.

We stayed here for three nights as part of a Top to Toe tour of Italy. There are actually two hotels built into the side of a mountain with spectacular sea facing views. However, to get to the beach, we were told we had to take a cable car down to the lower hotel, then go into a lift, then through a tunnel, then cross the road, then go through a town. We didn't bother! Rooms are very clean and spacious.
It is a massive hotel with a self service restaurant. If you want to stay in a small, quiet hotel, then this one isn't for you. There were thousands of people in the restaurant and sometimes you had to queue up for food. Although having said that, the food was plentiful, excellent quality with a huge selection.
On our first night our room was baking hot, we called reception at 2am as we couldn't get the air conditioning to work. We were told to leave the balcony door open (letting mosquitoes in!) and speak to reception in the morning. When we spoke to the receptionist the response was 'madame the air conditioning is turned off on 1 October, it is winter, it is only 20 degrees outside'. We did point out, being English, that was very hot to us. We had to just leave the balcony door open which didn't do much good as the sea breeze did not reach so far up the mountain.

As Italian hotels go - this is a little gem ( a gem not a jewel). The good points are the friendly staff, the relaxed dining, good quality breakfast and dinner on a self-serve basis. The absolutely stunning views if you are fortunate to be at the edge facing the sea - however both sides have views of the sea - but the room nearest the cliff naturally have more view of the cliffside. The lower hotel - even so reached by a pair of lifts reached by a tunnel through the hillside gives a magnificient view and terraces for an evening drink or a relaxing read are within mere footsteps of the bar. Dining is down a floor and try and secure a window table if you can - again the view across the straits of Messina should not be missed. Location Location Location as they say leads me to the Hotel Olimpic which is up the funicular railway. Now our cousins from across the water may start to sound like the proverbial Rolls Royce testing bay - at the suggestion of a funicular - but just think of this as being a smaller mass transit system but with stunning views. Those with vertigo : close your eyes and do not enjoy the hillside and the sea stretching across to mainland Italy - do not pass Go !

The top hotel has a better Pool, cool cafer area and views into the hinterland of Olive groves and rugged Sicilian terrain : but I suspect the lower bar attracts more nightlife.

Overall I found it good for a three day stay combined with two energetic coach expeditions (part of a package) with one day resetting my temperature gauge to chill.

Room Tip: Good airy room when I stayed. There are wet-rooms (ideal for wheelchair access) on 4th Floor - but t...

We did a ten night All-Inclusive stay at the Antares mid August 2013. If I wrote this review after the second day then I would probably have rated the Hotel very low. We discovered to our dismay that All-Inclusive wasn't exactly that. Gin, Whiskey, Vodka, Rum etc wasn't included and they charged the full price if for example you ordered a Gin and Tonic even though the Tonic was included in the package. We complained and the staff did their best to help resolve the matter but it was disappointing to discover that limitation during the holiday. Having said all that, the staff were great. Food was good to average but always fresh. Room was well kept but the bed was just about comfortable. Superb location with a great view of the area. Unfortunately, for us we would find it hard to recommend All-Inclusive unless you don't mind a limited drinks choice. The hotel staff managed to turn the holiday around and are by far the hotel's best asset.

Room Tip: Didn't notice any difference in the rooms they all seem to have a good view of some sort.

Dear Peter ,
thank you for posting a review on trip advisor.
We very disappointed to read that you were not satisfied with our All Inclusive. We deeply apologize for that , but in every brochure or hotel information is always stated that in the All Inclusive only national liquors from 18.00 pm till 24.00 are included.

We are very happy instead that our staff has been very helpful and friendly and that the food was your taste.

We wish to welcome you back again!

Regards
Valeria Bosco
