Review of Sorbisches Museum

Sorbisches Museum

This is a very comprehensive museum of the life and culture of this small ethnic minority. The exhibits are very well done and interesting. The highlight for me was the display of clothing and traditional celebrations. The major problem for us is that there is very little English text. I don't expect everything to be in English, but it would have been nice to have a guide in English available for the main highlights.

For only 3 euro you can spend as much time as you want exploring the history of the Sorbs. Art, life, history .... everything under one roof. Something I liked a lot was the exhibition of the Sorb traditional dresses and clothes for formal and informal events. Bright colors and lots of detail this is a must see exhibition. If you are in Bautzen this is a must see museum.

This museum is in the castle area. We had a bad weather so any museum would basically do, but this one was a nice surprise. The modernity of the current Saxon court palace in the building of the old castle is a bit striking to the simplicity and originality of this house, where you find pretty much all there is to this tiny nation of Sorbs. It is a small nation (some 60 000 people) with their own language(s) and culture, yet totally surrounded by a German community. The museum is the testimony of this development. The museum is divided on several floors, giving the account of history, literature, art, music, the clothing, photos and a lot of artefacts. One could say, oh boring, but the opposite happened. We were all surprised with how vigilant and full of rich history this museum had.

This is a must see in Saxony! The museum shows the history, life and art of the Sorb, a slavonic minority in Germany, very figuratively. What I like is that you can spend 1 hour or 24 in this modern museum - you will get all information you need. The entrance fee (something around 2,50 Euro or so) is very low. Value for money! And very impressive.
