Crown Inn
Reviewed March 30, 2010

I have to echo the comments from the prevous reviewer, that the food that we were served was terrible. I have never written a review before, but this beautiful restored building should invest in an actual cook and not just ping frozen packaged pub food from the microwave. I too had the vension shepherds pie ( the meat should be local !) and had to leave most of it as it was inedible and actually made me feel slightly sick for most of the day.
One good thing is that they serve a good glass of Sauv Blanc, but with the high standard of food in the area - you really need to lift the game substantially to gain repeat custom.

After waiting what seemed like a lifetime for the Crown to re-open, we were thrilled when it did. We heard good reviews about the restaurant but were sadly disappointed with our own experience. There were four of us and the food was, at best, acceptable. It was very average, typical pub food and not worth the price charged in the Crown. The venison shepherd's pie 'special' arrived cold so we had to return it. It came back super-nuked and the meat was tough and chewy. There was no way that should have been considered 'special' nor was it worth £14. We also had fish and chips that was very mediocre, salmon in filo pastry (straight from freezer to oven) and a piece of quiche that was acceptable but nothing special. On a more positive note, the desserts were tasty. The manager wasn't really interested in our experience and just shrugged us off. We were sad that our local pub isn't somewhere we want to eat at again.

When our local bed and breakfast was fully booked, we turned to the Crown to put up two friends who were visiting us for the weekend. It is located on the green in Horsted Keynes village, near the Bluebell Railway, Sheffield Park Garden, and the mainline train station at Haywards Heath. We had a meal in the busy restaurant which was rebuilt and refurbished after a fire a few years ago. The pub is traditional looking with sandstone and beams. Our friends said the accommodation was comfortable, quiet and featured a good breakfast. The service was friendly and it is easy to park. The price was in line with other area inns and hotels. We will use the Crown's rooms again and we'll be back for a drink next weekend!
