Once a year I enjoy visiting this exhibition of very special art. In addition, the children of the family enjoy different kinds of rides and jumps. Cafe and ice cream is available, too. The beautiful lake Saimaa just beside is a great bonus.

It is the annual event to build up a huge sand castle in the harbour of Lappeenranta. This time we saw sand sculptors in work. They seemed to be from different countries. Remember to enjoy of a local delicacy vety (nitrogen) or atomi (atom) in the nearby kiosks earlier on the way to the sand castle. They are meat pies filled by different ingredients. A long list of questions regarding the content of your delicious pie.

Just a short walk from the city centre, the sandcastle is actually a bit wrong term for it since it is an area with sculptures made of sand, not actually a sandcastle. The sculptures are different each year. The entrance is free, but if your kids like to visit some small train or bouncing castle or a merry-go-round, you can buy tickets for them from the info building left from the entrance of the area. There are either single tickets for the vehicles (1 eur) or a day-ticket (4 eur). The entry to the train for accompaning adult with the child was free, which we didn´t understand first (bought far too many tickets :D). There is a area for small children to make their own sand works as well, not very special, but kind of oversized sandbox. Our kids loved it though, they didn´t care much for the sculptures, which was expected as they are 1,5 and 3 years old.

This years (2017) exhibition began in June and continues open to the public until the end of August and I thoroughly recommend a visit if you are in the vicinity.
It is an annual event, the sculptures being created by professionals invited from different countries.
This years theme is "Lappeenranta in 100 years time" and is the brainchild of children from Grades 3 to 6 at the local school and includes ideas such as homes and schools of the future, a time machine and holographic clock, just to mention a few of the many on display.
This year there is also a chapel carved from the sand, it's theme being taken from the Gospel of John, 3/16.
It was my second visit, the last being three years ago. I sincerely hope that I will be able to see more of them.
