“Restaurant of this hotel is just so great”
Reviewed February 25, 2012

The hotel itself is interesting with rocky walls. Rooms are average, but the restaurant is excellent. The service is always first class, waitress are extremely friendly, great with kids and food is very good.
Swimming pool is ok, kids just love it.

We chose this hotel because it's right next to the zoo. This is in fact the only good thing about the hotel. The rooms were awful, I don't think they've ever been renovated. We took the "superior room" for 135 euros, but it was far from superior. The food (dinner, breakfast) was decent.

I would recommend taking some nearby B&B with much better value for money.

Whatever time of year you take a break in Ähtäri, you will go away with fantastic memories. The location is wonderful for snowmobiling, walking, enjoying nature, driving small 4x4, cross country skiing, fishing, hiring bicycles and, of course, visiting the native animals of Finland at the wildlife park. Scandic Mesikämmen is a great spa hotel serving excellent nordic cuisine. You will find the róoms are of a very high standard and the service impeccable. Just one small reservation, no double beds. Not so good if you are on honeymoon!

This hotel was designed by same architects as the world famous Rock Church (also called Temppeliaukio Church) in Helsinki. The hotel was built in 1976 and some years later it got the "Diploma and Silver Hexagon of Habitation Space" award. The hotel is situated by a small lake in very beautiful surroundings. The hotel is built partly in the Finnish primary rock! There is an extremely beautiful scenery from every room and from the summer terrace. The spa department with swimming pools (big pool, children's pool, jacuzzi, saunas) is open in the morning and some hours in the afternoon. The use of swimming pool department is included in the room price only in the morning. Good surroundings for hiking.

Along a small quiet lake, partly excavated in the rock, a very nice place to rest or stopover when crossing this very remote area in Finland

Hotel Mesikammen is a friendly and very down-to-earth place for accommodatting visitors to the Zoo (across the road) and nearby trails. Rooms are small, "spa" very basic, restaurant is nothing special, and service is very Finnish (oriented towards self-service more than service). Breakfast is good if you like the traditional Finnish offering of oatmeal, break and cheese, yogurt, coffee and other basics. No eggs are cooked to order here :)

Nevertheless, the hotel does do what it is supposed to, but visitors shouldn't expect service or quality that one could get for the same price somewhere else, especially outside of (Northern) Europe. It has to be also noted that the view from the rooms is great, and there's even a pier if you want to take a dip in the lake.

Only real negative comment that I need to leave is the absence of working A/C in the rooms. It's rare that one would need one, but we happened to visit the hotel when it had been rather warm for a long time, and hence the room was 29C throughout the night. Only proper ventilation would have been the balcony door, but we weren't ready to trade the heat to mosquitoes.
