“Perfect!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2013

We have spent 3 wonderful days in the Douro Valley with Casa Cisterna as our base. We loved everything at the Casa: the delicious food, the views, the unique and creatively decorated rooms, but above all our excellent hosts Ana and Antonio, who arranged home cooked meals, guided tours at night to view prehistoric carvings, and donkey rides! We hope to be able to return soon!

This small hotel in the magical town of Castelo Rodrigo in NE Portugal is fabulous. The owner Ana and her husband have 7 wonderful, modern rooms, all decorated differently and with great flair and taste and they are in the process of building a larger building with an additional 4 rooms and a swimming pool including living space for Ana and her family. From the moment you arrive, she goes out of her way to please you and you feel like you are part of the family. Her cooking is amazing and she makes most of the jams and toppings for her breads as well as most of the other delicacies that she serves. We also had dinner there and it was a wonderful meal of traditional Portuguese cuisine. She also has an ample supply of good wine to drink in your room or at dinner. They have a "chill out room" for guests that includes a wood stove, TV, smooth Jazz playing and numerous DVD's in a variety of languages. Ana was going to take us on a guided tour of the archeological areas at sunset, but the rain set in and we couldn't go. My husband and I have traveled extensively and have rarely stayed in a B&B/small hotel that was as well appointed, well run, clean and friendly. Put this on your places to visit as it is super relaxing. The charming town, by the way, is an added bonus. It is amazing to see it perched on the side of the hill ablaze with flowers, spectacular views and a wonderful view into ancient Portugal.

Room Tip: All of her rooms are great.

Go to Castelo Rodrigo: is really amazing and peaceful. Casa da Cisterna is situated in the village so the location is perfect. The owner and the employees were really nice. The only thing is that breakfast could be more varied.
The house has a small swimming pool but when I was there it was under maintenance works.

Castelo Rodrigo is a village in some remote and beautiful area of Portugal next to porto vineyards and the Coa archaeological site. It has an old castle and breathtaking views. The village is emerging from ruins: it is genuine, has a lot of character and is being thoroughly renovated.

Casa da cisterna is a great example of this renovation process. It congregates a few small houses in a really well put together inn. The decoration is simple but very tasteful. The rooms are super clean and well decorated, bathrooms are quite simple, there is heating and ac.
The food is delicious, a healthy breakfast is set on a large common table with a lot of local products.

The host and the staff are incredibly nice and helpful.

We had a wonderful time this winter and I would love to come back.

Having traveled throughout Portugal we set out to this recommended wonderful guest house that is run by Ana, a biologist and super chef! Beautifully restored old house with gorgeous rooms, all tastefully decorated. Ana is a warm and welcoming hostess that knows all about the environment, the rock art sites at the dramatic Côa Valley Archaeological Park and nature, plant and bird life. She and her husband Antonio have initiated the Reserva da Faia Brava a 600 hectare private nature reserve which we visited to go bird watching (home of the Bonelli’s eagle, the golden eagle, griffon vulture, Egyptian vulture, eagle owl etc..). Ask them about the vulture feeding…Breakfast was superb, best we had all trip. Ana also cooked us three creative dinners with a fine selection of wines. We will certainly return to this hospitable place.

Room Tip: All rooms are equally beautiful!

I recently visited the Upper Douro river valley, and the Casa da Cisterna was just an overnight stop on the way to our destination. I would have gladly stayed here for days, it was warm and welcoming, very nicely designed and decorated. The old house has been completely re-done and there are options ranging from the 65 euro range upwards to about 115 or 120. Check out their website on wonderfulland.com, because what you see there is what you get.

The owners are both biologists who worked in the Parque Internacional do Douro for years and then opened this place. I only wish is were about 120 kms further north, so that it could be a good base for visiting the park. As it is, it is really too far south to make it a good location for day trips of that area. But there are some interesting places in the area, Almeida, Pinhel, the rock paintings at Foz Coa, Trancoso, etc., so you could easily make it a 2 or 3 night stop in a larger circle trip.
