“Disappointing”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

Visited with a group, which had been pre-booked a couple of weeks earlier. With hindsight it would have been much better to also have been provided with menus in advance and pre-ordered the food. On arrival the ‘special’ menus were not yet available, hence it was almost 30 minutes before guests had sight of them and could decide on ordering. Starters were a little slow in coming but were fine. Main course portions were generous, and potatoes and veg more than enough for everyone. Couple of problems with the main courses though: my lamb tagine was sent back twice (first time the bowl was covered in excess sauce down the side and the plate was also not clean; second time the bowl was cracked all the way down). It was third time lucky but by then most of my fellow diners at the table were practically finished. The waitress did kindly offer to get fresh veg/potatoes as the ones on the table had been there quite a while by then. Other diners at the next table complained about the poor state of vegetables, which had to be replaced. They were also late in being served so were eating as everyone else had finished. Verdict? Ample quantities, average quality, very poor service for a group. It might be a different experience if going as a couple or a foursome. The waitressing staff did their best and were as helpful as they could be. The logistics of group service need addressing by the management.

“embarrisingly awful”
Reviewed May 19, 2013

we visited the stanley on saturday 18th may at approx 6.15pm the restaurant was fully booked when we phoned earlier that day but were told that pub grub wasnt a problem we were in a party of 6 (2 had travelled over from cumbria ).on arrival the bar was 10 deep with only 1 young lady serving (and she was supposed to finish at 6.)the manager walked to the bar to tell her she was on her own for another half an hour and made no attempt to help out !!(finally got served after 17 mins )what a joke..put a food order in and waited 35 mins for it to arrive, had to ask for cutlery, then had to wait 5mins for veg,1 of the meals ,the fish was raw ,the chips had been done in the oil they cooked onion rings in we complained to the bar staff and ten minutes later the waitress came over and said in a very customer friendly way ( not !!) what;s wrong ?,no apology was forthcoming only confirmation later on from the manager "that fish WAS raw " if we wanted raw fish we could have gone to a sushi bar.give this badly run pub a miss ,plenty of decent well managed food led pubs in the area ,deffo wont be goin back.

“A long wait!”
Reviewed May 18, 2013

What a disappointment! Travelled up to Merseyside to meet my family and go for lunch only to have to wait 50 minutes for the simplest of meals. Not an apology in sight until we complained (oh, we're a bit busy today!) and a meal that was 'okay'. Very disappointed and won't be visiting again any time too soon!

“The Unexpected”
Reviewed May 17, 2013

This little gem of a restaurant was found almost by accident whilst out for a meal one evening. We had heard of it and called in on 'speck' so to speak.
What a pleasant surprise, it was warm and cosy, we were greeted by the very friendly staff in the bar and made to feel very welcome. We hadn't noticed the restaurant but having asked for a table for four, were shown into a very clean and stylish dining room.
The host, Andrew seated us and pointed out the 'specials board' plus the a la carte menu. What a selection. We ordered and were equally surprised at the quality and quantity of the dishes.. superb
The venue, the staff and the standard of the cuisine ensured we would return for those special treats, well done the Stanley

“Excellent food, shame about the service”
Reviewed April 30, 2013

My family and I have visited the Stanley Arms many times over the past 10 years and have never been disappointed up until a recent visit. There was 5 adults plus baby and we made a reservation. We were wondering if new management had took over as customer service was really downhill. We had to wait 20 minutes for a table and it wasn't overly packed. Waiting time for main course was 25 minutes. When I addressed this with one of the waitresses, I got a scowl off her as she turned to walk towards the kitchen. I also noticed her give another customer a dirty look when they asked her about something. If I'd have been her manager and noticed, she would have been sacked. Pubs/restaurants and other services cannot afford to have staff who act in that way as ultimately they lose business. When the food came brought by another waitress, I addressed the long wait with her, she said she would mention this to kitchen staff but never came back with an apology. The food was lovely and this is the only positive comment I can give. The pub also needs to address lack of changing facilities for babies. My daughter struggled to change her 10 month old daughter and this caused a lot of distress to baby. Another Mother who was in the toilet also expressed frustration at lack of facilities, it is a family pub after all. Overall I am going to stick to foreign restuarants as the service is miles better, you don't get scowls, you don't have to wait ages for your meal and they are more child friendly. Another negative about the Stanley Arms was the price of soft drinks , nearly £5.00 for a pint and a half of Coke??? Its a shame aswe have really enjoyed going to the Stanley Arms for quite some time but won't be going again. A large 'clique' presence as well, never a good thing.
