Never having been to this area before, we went by the good reviews and stayed at this hotel. I had to wonder if we were actually in the same hotel that was getting such good reviews! Our room (No,2) was very dowdy, the ensuite shower room lacked room to move, it was tiny. But much worse was the smell. The whole room reeked of damp and when I touched the walls the paper was actually coming aways from the wall because of said damp. The smell in the bathroom was much worse. When I opened the wardrobe that too smelt mouldy. On returning home, every item of clothing had to be washed and the bags had to be aired outside as unfortunately they had absorbed the damp smell. We paid £62 for this room with breakfast. If only we had travelled a few miles further on and stayed at a premier inn.

Had a brilliant stay at the Park View. The executive room is a must!!! I had a one night stay whilst on a business trip in the area. Having travelled as a lone female i didnt feal uncomfortable in any way and the staff tended to my every need. The room was spotless and of excellent size. Well done to all, I would certainly recommend.

After staying at the Park View Guest House for a number of days I can say that I found it to be a pleasent, friendly environment. My 2 children and I found the staff to be helpful and willing to go to extremes to help us, the rooms were of nice size and being in a family room also found the bathroom to be particularly spacious which I havent found at other places we've stayed at. The rooms were very clean on arrival and were cleaned everyday of our stay. The english breakfast was also a welcoming start to our days. I would recommend staying at the Park View Guest House for anyone looking for that friendly atmosphere

Visiting friends in St Helens i was recommended to stay in the Park View Hotel & Guest House and booked over the phone a double room for myself and girlfriend. The woman over the phone was very infomative and gave me directions how to get to the hotel from the M62. Unfortunately, we got lost and phoned the hotel for further directions. We told the woman our location and was immediately informed to wait there and she would come to us so we could follow her back to the hotel. I must say this was much appreciated.

On arriving at the hotel we were immediately shown to our room which was standard but very comfortable. En-suite, colour tv, tea coffee etc. But most off all it was presentable and clean as my girlfriend can be rather fussy. While looking round the room we did notice no towels but were brought them soon after. We asked that the website offers executive suites and would it be possible to view one to make the night more special. These are on the ground floor which gave me reservations for noise etc but was assured most of the guests were in other parts of the building and we would have a quiet night. We decided to pay more and take it since it had a leather sofa, widescreen tv and bidet and looked more upmarket. We were quite surprised that an old victorian house on the outside could offer rooms of both standard and really up market. We was also informed that if we wanted a late breakfast then that would be ok.

After visiting friends, we did in deed come back to the hotel a bit merry but was welcomed with a smile by the staff on duty unlike some hotels i could mention. Also we both slept very soundly.
After having a late breakfast circa 10am which was very filling but hit the spot, we packed and was ready to leave. We did ask if we could leave our bags in the hotel until later that day as we were visiting friends and didn't want to leave valuables in the car. Again the staff were very affable and told us that would be fine.

Overall we had very pleasant experience. The place is not a palace but comfortable, spacious and clean and with character. Niether do they charge palace prices. It has plenty of parking and in a convenient position. But most of all the staff are very approachable and helpful and willing to alter things i.e. times etc to make your visit more comfortable. There are few places left were they dont issue you with a set of rules and times when you check in but this is one of them. Very Satisfied

St Helens, Merseyside : Park View Hotel & Guesthouse
Date : June 2008
Reviewer : Disgusted from Scotland

As advertised on their own site, the rooms were en-suite with tea, coffee facilities - and that is where it ended and the nightmare began despite an RAC 3 Star rating sign being shown at the door. The owner of this property should hang his/her head in shame.

Our party of 6 arrived late afternoon, after a long journey from Scotland, in time to leave our bags and go directly to a 3 day workshop in the area. Immediately we had concerns but no time to act on these. On our return at 10.30pm our suspicions were finally realised as we discovered filthy, smelly rooms, no working lightbulbs, drains backing up in showers and no member of staff on the premises. Kettles were grubby and cups were worse, no teaspoons and the teabags were left out in a basket. Goes without saying we did not use them. Met another resident while looking for staff who said local Council had put them there 3 weeks ago and they couldn't wait to get out. Most of our party had booked single rooms and found there were at least another 2 beds in all the rooms allocated to our party.

Phoned contact number for premises and 2 staff appeared about 15 mins later. Initially they were defensive, but later proved helpful, allocated another room to 2 of our party and promised to be in a position to move another the next day if she could use the bathroom of one of our party in the meantime. By this time it was going on midnight. One member of staff phoned her boss and said there was a terrible smell coming from one of the rooms. By this time we were all so exhausted we had no option but to sleep in the beds - and have tried not to think about it ever since!!!!! We did not expect the Ritz considering the rates, but clean rooms and facilities with working lights is not a lot to ask for in 2008.

Due to our commitments in the area, the lack of time to find anywhere else, and the unavailability of other accommodation in the area - we think the rest from our workshop group had managed to bag the good places - we had to endure another night.

The only positive note was that the harassed staff did help us out as much as they could. One girl came in early to make breakfast so as to fit in with our timetable and the breakfasts were fine - although we did have a squint in the kitchen first and, on the surface, it looked OK.

It will come as no surprise to hear that the staff at St Helens Tourist Information Office named the property immediately I said we had stayed in the area and wished to complain about accommodation. It appears I am the last in a long line to do so.

In reply to the posted letter dated June 27 2008 by craftaholicscotland:

Your party is remembered as being particularly fussy and yet wanting to pay the bare minimum. May I assure you that all our rooms are cleaned on a daily basis and are always given a glowing report when visited by either the environmental health or health and safety. The standard and description of our rooms can be seen at our website.

It is unfortunate that the day before your arrival the area had experienced torrential rains hence the small drain problem which is clearly the responsibility of the water company, and has been reported. Furthermore, bulbs do occasionally go at the most inconvenient times but must clearly be replaced by the appropriate trades man as stipulated by health and safety regulations. Continuing, tea spoons, do indeed get taken by guests as happens in most hotels, so hotel policy is to leave only one or two in each room. Concerning tea bags, as we do cater for the elderly who have problems opening sachets we do leave them loose in a basket. However, this point is duly noted.

We must stress however, we do not take DSS. Instead we have an agreement with the local council and insurance companies to occasionally take guests who need temporary accommodation due to either domestic violence or relocation due to a house flood etc. This is our way of giving something back to the community.

Concerning your comment on too many beds. The hotel has few single rooms, mostly doubles or family rooms like in most hotels. However, when requested we do allow single occupancy in these rooms, so the guest receive a room 3 to 4 times bigger than normal. Clearly, this is an advantage. Furthermore, we have always had a good response from the Tourist Information Office and do get referrals.

Here at the hotel we pride ourselves on customer service and clearly from your letter you received this, as the staff did everything in their power to accommodate your requests i.e. move rooms, early breakfasts etc. Furthermore, the rooms you moved to were executive suites. I also notice from the accounts that not only were you not charged for your executive suites but were also given a discount for your minor inconvenience. You where charged approx. £25 per person per night which included two executive suites and breakfast.

May I suggest next time you stay at the Ritz and dig deep in your pockets and you will probably still find something to complain about.

Regards

ParkView Hotel
