“This Hotel has the "WOW" Factor”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 12, 2010

We had a group of guests staying at the Dunblane Hydro Hotel between the 6th and 10th May 2010. I accompanied this group.

For me, the hotel had the “WOW” factor on more that one occasion – seeing the building for the first time and the drive up to the entrance. The second being the furnishings, the décor of the reception area and the comfort of the public rooms.

One of the thing which was most noticeable from the outset was the friendliness and courtesies extended by all the staff from the cleaners right through to the hotel management – nothing was too much trouble for them. Without exception all seemed to be so happy in their jobs and it was obvious that their prime objective was to please the guests.

The hotel was spotlessly clean and well maintained and the towels both in the bedrooms and health club were of excellent quality.

Breakfast in the restaurant was outstanding in so far as quality, choice, and service were concerned.

Unfortunately service at dinner was disappointing as were the size of the portions presented. On the first evening I spoke to Restaurant Management concerning this. Subsequently the group did received additional potatoes and vegetables, but unfortunately these were not served with the main meal but some time after. The quality of the food and presentation of all the dishes was excellent, but the quantity was meagre. The group had to sit and wait for approximately 40 minutes each evening before their order was taken and then it was a further 35 minutes before the first course was served. The service for both the main course and desert following flowed well.

As with any group, it is hard to please all, but in general, feedback was positive in respect of all other aspects of the hotel operation with 72% indicating that they would return to the hotel in a private capacity.

For me, I certainly would return to the Dunblane Hydro and would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending same to potential clients.

A couple of suggestions that I would make –

a) Bedroom courtesy trays – a biscuit or portion of Scottish Shortbread would be appreciated.
b) Toiletries should be replenished when exhausted.
c) With the modern flat screen televisions in the bedrooms – the provision of a Teletex service would have been appreciated.

Thank you to all for making our visit to the Dunblane Hydro so enjoyable and please pass our thanks to all concerned. You have a great team there!

Took my fiance to this hotel as a surprise for his birthday weekend. This was the first time we had visited. Hotel looks lovely as you travel up the drive and look up to the building over the lawn. We checked in very smoothly and were given our warm cookie which I believe is standard in Doubletree hotels, nice touch.
Our room was in the newer wing of the building and was spacious, modern and clean. First impressions were good. Unfortunately in this particular room the window did not open which would have been disasterous on such a warm sunny weekend but reception noted the problem and immediately sent the porter along to see if there was anything he could do. It was decided that the window was jammed and we were quickly moved to another room, this time in the main building. Our new room was slightly smaller and I was disappointed it had a standard double bed instead of the Queen bed I had booked, this was the only negative of the whole weekend.

We ate in the Nick Nairn Kailyard restaurant on the Saturday night which couldn't be faulted, the food and the service were superb.
We enjoyed the evening entertainment in the Stuart lounge after diner with a singer doing swing songs, it was all very relaxed with great service from the bar staff (and a few yummy cocktails!)

We found plenty to do and see in the area, we found Dunblane itself to be a nice little place and also in a great location for exploring other villages/towns/cities with easy road and rail access.

We would happily return to the Dunblane Hydro as overall we experienced high service levels from friendly staff and had an extremely enjoyable stay.

We booked a three night April stay in Hilton's January sale, so got an excellent B&B deal. Refurbishing this enormous Victorian building to high class modern standards must have been a huge challenge, but it's been very well done. (When you see the number of chimney pots it makes you wonder what happened to all the fireplaces.)

Bedrooms and bathrooms are excellent - I want one of those showers!

Staff courtesy and helpfulness are second to none.

The unique selling point, however, is the restaurant. Nick Nairn's menu is in safe hands with the staff he has here, and the food itself is out of this world. It isn't cheap, but at the prices charged it represents tremendous value for money.

Stayed at the Dunblane Hydro for an overnight with my husband. Hotel has recently been refurbished - decor is lovely.

We booked for dinner, bed and breakfast. Paid extra for a room upgrade inside the main hotel building - when booking online the room was described as bright and spacious but turned out to be very small. Don't think the room was worth the money we paid.

Had read a few bad reviews about the restaurant before going but we both found the food really nice, we were served quickly and the staff were pleasant. Drinks were expensive but suppose thats to be expected.

Leisure facilities did remind me of my local council swimming pool and gym, not what i'd expect from a 4 star hotel.

Overall we had an enjoyable night, all the staff were very accomodating and the public areas of the hotel were lovely. Would stay again if we managed to get a better deal

Thanks for your comments and glad that you had an enjoyable time on your overnight stay at the hotel. Especially pleased that your experience was that the food was really nice and the service was good. A planned major development of the Health Club has been proposed and we, too, are aware of the need to update some areas in advance of this. Sorry that you didn’t feel the added expense of an upgrade to your accommodation was good value due to the size of the room. If you would like to contact Michelle.Gray@hilton.com before your next visit she will be able to tell you of any special offers and will arrange a complimentary upgrade to your accommodation. Thanks again and we hope to see you again soon.

Booked an overnight at the Doubletree with DB & B. Initially thought it was good value but alarm bells should have kicked in when there was no table d'hote menu & in small print somewhere near back of menu, it intimates that if you are on a DB & B rate then you have £23 to use with everything above charged to your account. Wasn't to fussed by that more annoyed by the fact it was kept quiet. Check in fine but basic. Friendly, predominately young staff, some of whom want you to know that this is only to pay for university, have hearing problems & forgetfulness it seems. Wine was not what was ordered, coffees took longer than food, even after seconds of reaffirming 'no ice' in drink still heard the clink of ice in glass & then had the cheek to tip out ice using same glass. Still, food very good & actually reasonably priced, maybe with above coments in mind. Room we had was as asked for & comfortable. As it was busy, we couldn't get booked into restaurant between 6.30 & 9.15, worth noting if you decide to stay. Only one bar but staff kept it ticking over fine with no real wait for drinks. Entertainment was on the night we stayed & was way above average. Pool & gym require you to leave hotel for short walk round corner. fine if weather dry but it is Scotland after all. Dunblane is in a great location with plenty decent walks etc in the area but for some reason, hotel dosen't really push this. Overall, we enjoyed the break but would we go back???? Ask me later.

Thanks for your feedback on your recent stay at the hotel which we will share with the team as part of our on-going commitment to improve. The pricing structure in the Kailyard was developed after fairly extensive customer research. Our new menu introduced this week mentions the allocation for inclusive diners at both the start and the end of the dish selection. The team in the Kailyard by Nick Nairn are now getting it right most of the time. Sometimes we appreciate this is not the case and we are working everyday to improve. The vast majority of feedback we receive is very positive and we are working hard to deliver consistently. Glad you enjoyed the break and thanks again for the time and trouble you have taken to give us this feedback. We hope to see you again sometime soon.

I couldn't understand the negative reviews about this hotel. Had been a bit concerned after reading some of them as I was taking my mother for her 70th birthday treat...but we had an exceptional time. The hotel was wonderful, the staff exceptional, and the evening meal...well Nick Nairn should be very proud..gold stars all round for the chefs and the restaurant staff..I only wished I could have tried everything on the menu !!!
Our room was great and for us in an ideal location. Room was spacious, spotlessly clean, and the beds are so comfortable.
Will definately stay again..and would recomend this hotel to anyone

Arrived at the hotel with my 80 year old mother and my two sisters for a family get-together. Check in was smooth apart from the lift not being operational - this was due to a power cut the previous week and problems obtaining a special part needed to repair it - fair comment as this was the Easter weekend. Not ideal though for my Mum who had to struggle up and down the stairs.
We were allocated two rooms in the annex of the hotel and were very disappointed - not what we had come to expect from a Hilton. My sister returned to reception to enquire as to whether better rooms were available. The receptionist was rather surly and not very willing to try to assist with our problem. (She was the only staff member during our stay who we would not have given "10" to.)
She did arrange for the duty manager, Callum, to come to discuss our problem with us. He could not have been more helpful and upgraded us to superior rooms overlooking the front of the hotel. The duration of our stay was met by happy, friendly and helpful staff who went out of their way to ensure we had a pleasant stay. The ambiance, decor and dining experiences were alll excellent and I would not hesitate to return to the hotel. We ate in the restuarant on the first evening but the second night we went to the River House in nearby Stirling (one of the restuarants owned by Carol Smillie's husband) It was excellent - the early bird dinner (between 5 and 7) was very good value at £12.95 for two courses and a drink). Would definately recommend hotel for a relaxing break.
