“Wedding visit”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Overall impression of the hotel is I'm afraid to say, disappointing. Fortunately, I had booked a deluxe family room which was a really good sized room on the second floor looking down over the main entrance and the grounds of the hotel.
No complaints about the room size, furnishings or the bathroom apart from the "miniscule" wardrobe which was a bit better once we had removed the iron and ironing board.
Cleanliness was however another matter; first impressions DO count and to see the stairs leading up to the room in need of a good hoovering on arrival and still the same on departure, does not bode well and so it proved.
The room carpet was stained in quite a few places (regrettably I didn't take photos) and the windowsills dusty but the bed and bathroom were immaculate.
One major point that really needs addressing as a matter of urgency, is the lack of directions to some of the rooms; we spoke to people that had been wandering the corridors in search of rooms that didn't seem to have any signs indicating their location.
Bar and restaurant staff were very friendly but the service could be chaotic to say the least in the restaurant, with our party being offered their sweets before we had even had the starter and nobody seeming to know even which table the orders were for.; this was on the Friday night.
Breakfast on the Saturday was excellent with flasks of tea and coffee on the tables but Sunday morning (where admittedly it was very busy) was a total shambles with different areas for different selections and quite a wait at times for tea and coffee, in fact we had to ask 3 times for refills.
The food was very good, tasty and very well presented if a touch pricey and the drinks prices were extortionate to say the least.
We personally didn't use the SPA but my son and the kids, (large and small) enjoyed the pool on the Saturday morning.
Would we stay here again? I doubt it very much as there are far better hotels offering far better value for money not too far away from this area.

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms are a better option, having seen the other rooms that my son and his wife were in a...

This was one of three hotels we stayed at on our holiday to Scotland. Unfortunately, it is the only one that we would not stay at again. The hotel itself is beautiful and we found the staff friendly. The staff in the cocktail bar were great. The room was a real issue. We stayed 2 nights and I did not get a sleep on either. Thankfully we were able to go to another hotel so I could get a good nights sleep for the final leg of our holiday. So what was wrong, the room was very small. The bed was very small. There is no air conditioning. Our room was above the kitchen. When the windows were open we were disturbed by the sound of the kitchen extractor fans. When the windows were closed, the room was too warm. If it had not been mild, we could not have stayed in the hotel. We were also surprised to see that used trays were left in stairwell and were not cleared away from morning to evening. The gave a bad impression. The restaurant was very good, although our final course was forgotten and the waiter had to ask us again what we had ordered. The food was great- great job by the Chef. In summary, great food, nice bar and restaurant, friendly staff, very poor accommodation, and a lack of attention to detail.

Dear GeorgeMcConn

Thanks for your time and effort in reviewing our hotel after your recent stay with us.

There is a instant message of the room allocation your received just not quite meeting with expectations, some totally understandable and others are just in the design and layout of the a conversion of a Victorian building.

The strong positive feelings on the staff are a fantastic tribute to the team and I hope that given a room allocation that could meet fully with your wishes on your next stay, you will give us another chance in the future.

Thanks again for your review.

Yours sincerely

We chose to visit Dunblane Hyrdo to celebrate our 1st Wedding Anniversary. On arriving at the hotel the drive is very impressive and the grounds are lovely, however our check in was not too impressive. We had to wait in a rather long que as the desk was only manned with 1 receptionist who did not tell us where our room was situated or what time breakfast was served to. I was aware her badge said 'trainee receptionist' but surely she should be able to cover the basics. However once we walked around the hotel maze we eventually found our Junior Suite tucked away at the back of the hotel. Our room was very spacious and we were delighted to find a congratualtions card from the manager to wish us Happy Anniversary however it would have been appreicated more if he had actually seen the room we had been allocated. There is no doubt this hotel has potiental however you can see the rooms get well and truelly battered during the festive period (christmas party nights). The carpet has several black stains in the main sitting area and the carpet was badly worn in areas too. The bathroom very rather grubby, it had been cleaned but could badly do with an upgrade. The junior suite advertises Luxury Toiletries however we were left a shampoo and conditoner, not even a face cloth or soap to wash our hands. On a positive note the bedroom was lovely but we had to phone down to ask for the fluffy dressing gowns and slippers advertised with this room

The dinner in the restaurant was lovely and the staff where very friendly and attentive.
Overall i don't think we would return to this hotel, they advertise 'its the small things that matter' i think they should revisit this.

Thirty years and three name changes after my first visit there are at last some signs of the much-needed investment. For one thing the single inadequate small rickety old lift appears to have been replaced with a new inadequate small lift. It is farcical that such a large multi-story hotel can do no better than one small lift. So progress, but not enough.

Our 'superior' room (Diamond upgrade) had been renovated to a high standard but there is no getting away from the fact that it was too small. There were no chairs, possibly because there is no space for them. Even without the chairs the room was unpleasantly cramped for two people. The television only gave access to an apparently random selection of channels and no radio; clearly they have not got the hang of this digital television thingy.

The bath doubles as a shower and the lack of a shower mat nearly led to a serious accident. The hotel is thoroughly negligent in failing to provide such a basic safety item.

The restaurant was mediocre. This was actually an improvement on our visit some years previous when it was so poor we ate out in Dunblane. Despite bearing the name of a celebrity chef (who I have never heard of) the food lacks guile and seems formulaic. Service is poor; the young waiters lack knowledge of the food they are serving and appear poorly trained. We were on half-board terms and the food was acceptable for the price we paid but if we had been walk-ins expected to pay £ 30 a head I would have been seriously unhappy.

Breakfast is the usual Hilton buffet save that tea & coffee are served cup-by-cup at the table. This leads to irritating waits in getting refills.

The once-magnificent grounds are still a flower-free zone given over to grass and weeds plus a few random unkempt trees. This is a shame.

So, to put a positive gloss on this, there has been a distinct improvement since our last visit and at the current rate of progress given another thirty years this might once again be a fine hotel. Pity I probably will not be around to see it.

The grounds were nice. Staff were friendly but coolish. We were given a very small, cramped dark room overlooking the kitchen extractors! Sub standard for the price! Breakfast and dinner were consistently good. The pool was a short walk from the hotel, glad it was nice weather. Over all I was disappointed. I don't think I will stay there again.

Room Tip: Make sure you are not given a broom closet

Dear Janette M

Thank you for your review after your recent stay.

With the historic building we are located in, we are restricted with how some bedrooms are configured and ultimately this influences the size. It appears this has really made a deep impression on your overall judgement, even though mostly everything else was very satisfactory for you.

Thanks again for your review.

Yours sincerely

Good and bad with this hotel. If they could get the house keeping sorted they would have it cracked.
The first impressions of the attractive Victorian building are good, the reception area on the first floor is pleasant with lovely lounges and bar areas leading from it. However our rooms were allocated in the Stirling Wing (the modern extension to the hotel), from passing the conference rooms you are greeted by dark burgundy carpets and doors with skirting boards coated in dust. Not a welcoming look, it looks tatty, and something like a motel from the 80's. Our two BEDROOMS - a junior suite and double room - just a short walk from each other were of a reasonable size with modern furnishings. Quite spacious with granite tops in the bathroom and modern canvas prints on the walls. Nice sheets and good sized towels - towels changed daily as required.
The not so good bits were... dust on every skirting board, picture and TV top, stained and frayed carpet in the junior suite, bath wouldn't drain away in both rooms (trap blocked with hair??!) the silicone sealant around the baths and sinks in both rooms had mould on, Jacuzzi bath in j. suite not working. No hand soap. Lamp with bulb not working in the bedroom. Very expensive room bar prices..£5 for peanuts/£3 for small pack Pringles. Very poor cleaning of the rooms during our stay. More house keeping staff are need to get this hotel back into shape, obviously the ones employed have too many rooms to manage. No mattress protector on the sofa bed in the lounge area, just the sheet. Both rooms suffered from noise from the car park on a morning, especially when the generator and pressure washing started up early one morning to wash the cars for the Chevrolet 'car conference' The noise of people walking passed - even on the second floor - pulling wheeled cases - chatting - slamming car doors was very audible.

DINING - The Kailyard has a nice atmosphere on an evening. I would advise pre booking (via website - easy to do!) as it does get very busy Super Scottish waiting on staff. There appears to be two menus alternated on a daily basis. All our party preferred the black menu. Food was nicely presented and quite tasty. However, service wasn't consistent e.g., some days offered bread rolls (some time there was just white, some times choice of granary or white! and not always offered table water, had to ask on other occasions. The food wasn't always as described on the menu. Fruit salad on the children's menu one evening was raspberries and melon chopped up. The children's menu however was reasonably priced with a good choice of proper food. Not frozen chicken dippers etc.!! Obviously service and food is better when the kitchen isn't under as much pressure - one evening we took ages between courses and when the main course arrived the chicken was dry, tasteless and over cooked. The steak (£5 supplement) was very good indeed. They always have the blinds down over the windows. It would be lovely to see out and enjoy natural day light and the view over Dunblane.
Breakfast was the usual Hilton buffet. However the plates, despite being in the warmer, were cold on all days. It would have been nice to have pots of tea and coffee brought to the tables rather than a person walking around with them, as they weren't always around. Again the Scottish waiting on staff were obliging and efficient.
BAR - as expected drinks are quite pricey, but service and ambiance is good. The coffees and teas served , especially the Latte are excellent. One afternoon we enjoyed warm scones and cakes. These were superb. We were going to have afternoon tea, but reading what would be included we knew we wouldn't be able to eat justify dinner in the Kailyard that evening. Again, super staff.

If Hilton could get the cleaning sorted out we may return! I would probably pay extra too for a room in the original building with views over Dunblane.

Swimming Pool - we enjoyed a brief dip in the warm pool.... didn't stay long as we spotted the algae growing on the filters and tiles around the edge of the pool - well established algae too which had been growing a while! There was also black mould on the grout around the Jacuzzi and a dark line around the water mark. The pictures on the website make the pool look larger and more attractive than it is.

I stayed here on a seminar for one night. The hotel looks imposing coming up the drive and you enter it through a stylish staircase. The bar and restaurant follow the same theme. To get to the meeting rooms you follow a dark panelled corridor. Unfortuantely the designer forgot to build any lightning into it. Signs are not very clear and plentiful. As with an old building, there are doors and staircases everywhere. But no explanation where they lead to. Ladies toilets are also a commodity. The female members of our group seem to have to walk the entire length of the hotel. The bedrooms in comparison are modern, but for a hotel priding themselves of a highstandard, they are a let down. Dust on the desk, cuffed furniture and rust and mould spots in the bathroom. I would not frequent if on a private trip. Way overpriced for what it is
