Doubletree by Hilton, Dunblane-Hydro
Ranked #1 of 3 Hotels in Dunblane
Reviewed September 11, 2012

Now just to avoid confusion I am talking about the Dunblane-Hydro which is the big Hilton hotel on the hill, reading some of the reviews I can only presume there is another Hydro in Dunblane.

We have stayed at the Hydro many times over many more years than I wish to count and have seen the hotel go from an iconic Stakis hotel then under new ownership becoming so bad that it dropped right off the scale then further changes of ownership and major upgrades and renovations have once again brought it right back up to the top and again in the 'Hilton Family' of hotels.

On our last visit which was a shorter stay than we normally take we arrived early and were delighted to find that our room was ready and we were able to get in immediately.

Our room had a south facing view out over Dunblane and the countryside beyond. The room was (as all our rooms have been) recently modernised and very welcoming.

The room was very clean and had all the usual extras such as a mini-bar (all hotel mini-bars are expensive-ish) a TV / radio with alarm clock which you can set should you wish to get up early!

A large VERY comfortable bed with pristine linen provided us with a great undisturbed sleep.

The toilet in this room didn't have a bath only a shower so if a bath is important remember to ask for a room with one.
There were plenty of fluffy clean towels and complimentary toiletries provided and plenty of hot water in the shower.

The main dining room - 'The Kailyard by Nick Nairn Restaurant' provides excellent meals in a formal setting should you wish a lighter meal or less formal dining you can also order food from the bar.

Guests have free use of the attached Living Well Health Club which is a pleasant way to relax and unwind.

The staff are very cheery, pleasant and helpful and definitely make your stay welcoming.

As always the question is would we go back, this has to be an individual decision however we feel the Dunblane Hydro provides excellent facilities and good value so yes we will be back.

We arrived early but our rooms were ready. Great welcome with warm giant cookies! Rooms are ok but the joy of this hotel is the service, its location and the huge imposing building itself. Great meal in restaurant in the evening, good leisure centre. Will definately go again especially if I can get the upfront deal again

We stayed friday 8th September for 2 nights. The hotel sits in a very impressive setting with a great approach. Easy to walk to Dunblane although its up hill all the way back. No assistance was offered with luggage and there is a flight of stairs to reception, no bell hops to show you to your room. However the staff were all friendly. The room we stayed in had been recently refurbished and was very comfortable and well appointed although the TV did appear to have a timer on it and it switched itself off every 10 - 15 minutes, probably to prevent it being left on by accident. The bar and restaurant were all excellent with very good service and the food was of a very high quality. The hotel appears to have undergone a programme of partial refurbisment but some communal areas and some corridors were shabby. Maybe they have not finished although there were no works being undertaken when we were there. The pool and gym is run by Living Well and is free to guests but the facilities are very shabby, rust everywhere in the pool area, tiles missing in the steam room, generally very poor and needs a complete overhaul. It would not take much to get this hotel back to its former glory, it has some great plus points but lets itself down with little things that could be easliy recified. We would stay there again.

Room Tip: Choose a room near or above the reception as this is a big hotel and you could have to drag your lug...

Positives:
Grounds are beautiful
Check-in staff were great and friendly
Able to check-in early
Room (deluxe family) was great for the price
Restaurant food and staff both brilliant - and was welcoming to kids aged 4 & 6
Views amazing
Pool great
Stuart lounge and bar very comfortable

Negatives:
The lift - needs another lift
Bar staff a bit slow
Mini-bar expensive
Pool area a bit tired but it is clean
Weddings can take-over a bit

All in all a great hotel for a few days with the family. We travel a lot to a range of hotels and this hotel is excellent value for money with great service in a great location.

Will definitely return.

We stayed at the Dunblane Hydro for 3 nights, booked via hotels.com.  The hotel is located just a few minutes from Dunblane High Street (and Andy Murray's gold post box!) at the top of a long tree lined driveway. The hotel looks very impressive on approach and there is ample parking. Reception is up a flight of stairs but there is a lift if you  need it. Check in was quick and easy on arrival, although we didn't receive the warm cookie that everyone mentions!  The helpful receptionist got us checked in, gave us our key cards and directions to our room. We had a standard double room overlooking the rear car park. The room was spotlessly clean, with ample storage space, tea/coffee, mini bar, flat screen tv. There was also a small fan in the wardrobe, which came in handy!
Breakfast is buffet style with a huge selection to choose from. There are all the usual fruits, cereals, pastries and meats. If you prefer a cooked breakfast you can help yourself to bacon, sausages, Lorne sausage, scrambled and fried eggs, black pudding, haggis, tomatoes, beans and hash browns. Delicious! Tea and coffee are brought to you by order, unfortunately my pot of tea on the first morning was cold, but there was plenty fresh juice to have instead.
The cocktail bar is a nice place to relax, they also serve food if you don't fancy the formal restaurant - the steak sandwich with caramelised onions is very good!
We ate in the Kailyard restaurant on the final night of our stay. On arrival we were advised that there would be live music, which was being set up round the corner from the bar, and asked if we wanted to be seated away from this as we had our baby with us. We said that we would prefer to be further away from the music and this was accommodated without any issues. We were then approached and offered a window seat if we wanted to move. As we were already settled at our original table we declined, but the thought was appreciated. The service throughout the meal was excellent and friendly. The food was good - my husband had the tomato and red pepper soup followed by the chicken and enjoyed both. I had the slow roasted beef followed by the pear and apricot crumble with honeycomb ice cream - all very tasty!
The leisure facilities are separate from the main hotel building, but only a few minutes walk away. There is a gym, good sized pool with jacuzzi & steam room and beauty rooms. We popped down on our first day to check out the facilities, the member of staff behind the desk was very friendly and helpful, advising us that towels were provided and that the pool was available between 8am and 8pm for children. They also sell swim nappies of various sizes, goggles, swim wear etc.
All members of staff we came into contact with throughout the duration of our stay were friendly and helpful.
Our only complaint would be the noise that some other guests made late at night - talking very loudly and banging around in the corridor and slamming doors. Not something the hotel can control, and certainly not enough to spoil our stay, just a bit annoying!
We enjoyed our stay at the Dunblane Hydro and will definitely be returning!

Stayed for 2 nights in a family room. The room was dark and dreary and is in need of an update. The bed was one of the worst that I have slept in, woke up several times with one arm or the other in pain having fallen asleep because the mattress was so bad (I'm a side sleeper). The bed also creaked and woke up my daughter every time either my husband or I rolled over. The hallways were in dire need of a vacuum, but the room itself seemed clean.

Room Tip: The family room is very small when you open the sofa for a bed there is no room to walk anywhere exc...
