Owner description: Discover how 300 years of farming and rural home life have shaped and altered Scotland's countryside. Tour the period farmhouse for a sense of what living on a farm was really like more than 50 years ago, and meet the animals on the historic working farm: Ayrshire cows, Tamworth pigs, Scots dumpy hens, black-faced sheep and Clydesdale horses.

A good place too go and see how our food was once produced and an insight to what goes into producing food for the consumer. It was a bit light on material when I was there but have been told it has improved.

“A trip down memory lane”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

Visiting the National museum of Rural Life. Going back in time to learn and understand what Farming Life was like through the centuries, with the changes that have taken place. This is a time capsule of a hard working existence of families who have lived through famine and hardship. With tools and machinery progressing as the years have passed. Well worth a visit.

Most interesting Museum visit ever! The display on new and old agricultural equipment is the most complete we have seen. This place is also superb for children and a full day can be spent here. Excellent catering as well.,

“Times of Old”
Reviewed September 22, 2012

This is real life old fashoned country life. The children loved watching the cows being milked and the trip to the farm on a tractor trailer.

The museum displays are great and excellent value for NTS card holders.

“Great family day out”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

Visited here many a time with my grandpa - he loves going back to his childhood days and can familiarise with much of the experiences described in this charming museum. Make sure you take time to visit the farmhouse for a true look at rural life.

This museum is really handy if you're in the area so make sure you spend a couple of hours visiting.
