“less than what expected”
Reviewed June 2, 2011

We were served a very stringy Beef Fillet Steak (probably a mignon or gaulash meat made with reddish texture). Returned less one spoon of, but to no reaction from the stuff...
Do not order.
The pizza was very original but nice. It is a hard baked pizza base which the toppings (rocket and sliced meat and parmezan) placed after it went out of the oven.

“Delicious food, excellent service”
Reviewed May 12, 2011

We ate here three times over a two week stay in St Julians recently. We expected it to be expensive , but were pleasantly suprised. The food is excellent quality and beautifully presented, and very reasonably priced. The service is also very good, specials and fresh fish explained (and on display), attentive but not intrusive, and very friendly. It was too cool to enjoy the outdoor seating but it would be lovely during summer. Highly recommend the calamari and chorizo salad - it was really delicious.

“Excellent Sunday Lunch”
Reviewed May 9, 2011

I saw some negative comments on this restaurant and they must relate to the previous management. I tried it out with a party of 14 persons for Mother's Day Lunch. I have nothing but praise for the food, the service and the venue. First class.

“Seems pricey, but not really!”
Reviewed March 24, 2011

A brasserie that works with nice ingredients like foie gras and beef fillet is an invitation for a rip off, right?

In this case, not really. I had dinner in this restaurant and found the menu quite short, but with a nice selection of dishes. Tuna, grouper, T-Bone steak to share, pastas and pizzas. The ambient was very classy, yet not intimidating.

To drink, I ordered a glass of local chardonnay, which wasn't that great, unfortunately. It had a little note of oxidation which wasn't very pleasant.

For starter, I ordered the terrine of foie gras. To me, a restaurant that dares to work with foie gras has to be very self-conscious about their ability to deal with the product, because it's quite easy to taste the difference between decent and lame duck liver. So, I think that Villa either buys their terrine ready made or the chef does only the basic homework. The foie tasted good, but I could feel that there was a big potential to make it better than it was. It was served with toasted fruit bread, spiced pear chutney (which was a bit too sweet) and a slit cornichon. Basic, but nice combination. Nothing special though.

For main course, I had the seabass, which was served with sauteed chorizo and mangetout, saffron cream sauce and confit shallots. Simple, but also nice flavours. They serve the 2 sides of seabass instead of the common (at least in Dublin) 1 side only, so, more fish! Seasoning was spot on. Combination of flavours also good.

After this, 1 espresso and the bill. Rip off??? Not really. I'm used to Dublin prices, which makes this dinner actually a cheaper eat. So the bill worked out 35 euros. Worth a visit!
