If you are like us and like to be out and about all day and have several nearby choices of restaurants, bars etc with the convenience of a supermarket down the street then I can't recommend the Rokna highly enough. There is even a Casino nearby but the Rokna is no gamble. The staff are extremely helpful and will assist with any questions you have, all at a great rate. Give it a try.

In the heart of the city and neighbours with the Hilton Hotel, Rokna is well placed to access all parts of the city and southern reaches of Malta. I had the single room, which at first glance is very nicely presented. The staff are friendly and helpful, the facilities are clean and appear well maintained. On a tight budget, the Hotel will suit most pockets at 35 euros per night for the single. Plenty of bars resturants to choose from and vibrant nightlife, I ate out at 3am in the morning after clubbing. On the down side the rooms are showing there age and the decor looking worn in places, hence the 3 star, i also found the beds not that comfortable for long term stay of more than a week. Don't let that stop you though!

A great value for money hotel with lovely staff. They were always ready to lend any assistance. The attached restaurant (run by the same family who owns/runs the hotel) is also a great little place to eat. It's a no frills hotel, but it's clean and offers anything a traveller would need. It's located in a great spot too. Only a short walk to shops, nightclubs, bars and many restaurants, as well as of course the water.

So it doesn't have a swimming pool, gym, a bar or the most modern fixtures and fittings (you can go to the Hilton across the road if you really need these and pay considerably more for them as well) but what is does have is a relaxed, very friendly atmosphere and a warm welcome from the staff at this family run hotel and restaurant and a great location.

The bedrooms are a little tired 'furniturewise' and our shower room/toilet was very small but it was very clean throughout and had aircon. We paid extra for a balcony with our 2nd floor room and it was pleasant sitting outside in the evenings watching the activity in the street below. Be aware that the hotel is situated on the edge of the lively bar and restaurant district of St Julians called Paceville and it can be a little noisy in the early hours of Friday and Saturday. I took ear plugs and they ensured I got a good nights sleep.

The location of the hotel is close to the attractive marina and there is no shortage of restaurants close by. However, as far as quality and value, the hotel offers a good range of dishes with very generous portions and just about the best pizzas we have ever had. They have a pizzeria below the restaurant or you can sit in the dining room. In the end, we ate in the hotel every night because compared with other local restaurants, the hotel was the best value.

Breakfast is a buffet style with cold meats, cheeses, eggs, cereals, yoghurts, toast, fruit juices, teas (including Auyervedic) and coffee. They is lots of it and it is fresh every day.
In the bedrooms, there is a satellite box and wall mounted TV offering a limited range of programmes in English - BBC World news, BBC entertainment channels and some kids channels too. Others are in Maltese and Italian.

The Camilleri family, who have run the hotel for 35 years, are English spoken, warm, friendly and very helpful and can give advice on bus routes, places to visit etc.

The check out time is 11.30 and you can store your luggage in a secure area until you get your taxi to the airport (which they also arranged for us at a cost of 20 euros each way)

Our total bill for 6 nights in a double room with balcony and including meals and drinks came to just over £450 for two which we felt was excellent value.

The Rokna is a very affordable hotel located in a prime spot in Saint Julian's in Malta. The bedrooms are reasonable in size, with reasonably comfortable beds. The best rooms are on the second floor with lovely balconies. The first floor rooms can be noisy as the street th ehotel is located on is very busy-the first room I got had windows that didn't shut completely so the street was very audible.
But, though this may be a simple hotel, the service is EXCELLENT- every request or question I had was met knowledgeably, courteously and effectively. Some 5* hotels could learn a lot from the Rokna staff!
