“Good average hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 12, 2013

Spend two nights at the hotel. Good sea view room. Ok 4-star hotel and average. Nice bar interior. Overall ok, nothing to complain but nothing special either. Better choice would have been the 5-star Corinthia which is located right next door or the Intercontinental, both similar prices at that time when I made the online booking. Bath was kept very clean. Free internet which is important for business travelers.

Room Tip: Definitely book sea view room.

Despite neglecting to warn them that we will be arriving on a late morning flight - the reception staff just did her best to find a room with the requested view that was ready for us without reminding us first we were too early when we turned up. She was just as helpful, when we ungratefully turned down the ground floor room at the outdoor swimming pool level to explain we were happy to wait and come back later for one at a higher floor- (which turned out to be a prudent request - as they had a dance party over the weekend of our stay- but I stress at no time our evening rest was disturbed). She even offered and did call us on my UK mobile when the room was ready.
Bedroom and bathroom were both spacious and in a modern style with a large balcony from which we could have a good view of the sea. The only gripe is by the time we left they still hadn't correct the centrally set clock on the in-room TV, which was around 13hrs and 10mins out. I believed the maintenance staff explanation as our friends room were out by the same amount.
The buffet breakfast had a good variety of hot and cold food and constantly topped up. Despite being busy the staff were always prompt to serve tea/ coffee when we first sat down as well to clear the plates for our 'next round'.
We tried out the indoor pool, Jacuzzi and the sauna. The sauna was a comfortable size and well heated. The Jacuzzi water was however only luke warm - probably because it shared the same water as the main pool with its water constantly flowing out to the main pool for that trendy 'Infinity pool' look- so no chance to hold any additional heating to it.
We also explored the extensive 'garden' frontage over-looking the sea and the adjacent bay.
Although the hotel is in it's exclusive grounds - the public bus stops are only few minutes walk from the hotel and only 5 mins more to St Georges bay itself.

They gave us an upgrade and an awesome room. View was incredible and the breakfast was to die for! We had a much needed break from everyday routine, just enjoying a cup of coffee in the balcony and then went to have dinner at the Bistro.. Waiters were very friendly and the breeze was excellent.

We are regular visitors to the island of Malta, and frequently visit the St. Julians area.
The restaurant at the hotel offers a good varied menu with fresh and tasteful food.
We often attend the restaurant at lunchtime. Nothing is too much trouble for the friendly, helpful staff. Particular thanks to "Fehmi" our waiter. We ordered six meals. A complicated order with extras and omissions. Upon delivery, he knew who had ordered which dish and exactly each persons individual requirements.
Tip... order the chicken burger. It's not cheap. Good, wholesome large bread bun containing 100% pure chicken fillet cooked from scratch, filled with a variety of extras, served with "real" chips and an excellent salad.

Stayed there for a weekend break with my girlfriend for our anniversary. Excellent room with sea view balcony on 6th floor, room was very welcoming and comfortable, breakfast buffet was great and overall facilities also great. TV was dated but I was told hotel is in process to changing over to LED TV. Unfortunately, indoor pool was quite busy so we didn't get the chance to use it but to be expected over winter months.. Very memorable stay!

Room Tip: Ask for sea view room with balcony (non-smoking)

General

My first visit to this hotel was back in June 2013. There were a couple of meal related issues that I detracted from the visit and some decor issues that I raised in my Tripadvisor report.. but how did it rate this time...?

Location

The hotel is located at the tip of St Georges Bay. If most people staying here wanted to go to Valetta, they would have a bus journey, or potentially expensive taxi journey to get there. I like walking, so enjoyed the brisk 2hr walk to get there. The hotel is approx 15-20 mins away from the airport by car. If you want to ensure you are not ripped off by the taxis (they are bad), book your airport transfer through the hotel.

Reception - Checking In

As with the last visit, the reception staff were great and the check-in process was very smooth.

Room

The room this time was a very large room, with a double aspect - both windows overlooking the sea and both with doors leading on to the balcony / terrace. The balcony / terrace was massive with sunbeds, tables and chairs to enjoy the views. Back inside to room, the bedroom was bright and well furnished and had the usual mini-bar and a flat panel TV. The room had air-con with it's own controls, but seemed to struggle to keep the room warm in the rather unseasonal weather we experienced. However, we raised the issue at a "Meet the Management" drinks evening and by the time we returned to the room, a heater had been provided. The room was clean and well furnished, though I believe some of the furniture is a bit tired. The en-suite appeared to be new. It was modern and very pleasant. Seperating the en-suite from the bedroom, there were glass sliding doors that let light into the bathroom... but keep preying eyes out!

Dining / Bars

On this visit, we only are in the hotel at breakfast time. The cooked buffet breakfast was excellent and I enjoyed every breakfast in this week long visit.

Bars - Bar (!) the drinks with the management, which were in the small bar across from the reception, we had a few drinks in the Bridge Bar on several of the evenings. We enjoyed standing at the bar (could do with some bar stools though!) and chatting to the staff. On a couple of the evenings there were singers in providing entertainment and some of the "Strictly Come Dancing" viewers were up setting the dance floor alight!

Fitness Room

As the weather was rather cool, wet and windy throughout most of my stay, the outdoor facilities could not be used. However, I did use the cross trainer in the Fitness Room on several occasions to run off the beers from the night before. There was a lot of equipment in the fitness room and I didn't look to closely at the rest of the equipment, but the 3 cross trainers were very tired (perhaps I have been spoilt as I recently joined the Fitness Club at a new Radisson in Istanbul that has brand new equipment). Perhaps whoever manages the Fitness room should have a plan for upgrading the equipment.

Cleanliness

The hotel appeared to be clean throughout the areas I visited. No issues here!

Staff

As with the last visit, the staff were all excellent. They were all very pleasant and attentive - Still the hotels greatest asset. Special mention to The guest relations manager that we spoke to at the "Meet the Management" evening (SORRY! I can't remember the name, and THANKS for the heater) and Theo in the bar.

Other

The "Meet the Management" drinks session is a great idea and is a great forum for customers to convey any concerns / issues before they leave the hotel. - Or for customers to tell the Management about what they like about the hotel and their visit. It's best for all parties if any issues are raised before the stay ends and the Tripadvisor reports are written.

Will I be back - YES... Looking to book for the week of the 50th Anniversary of Malta's independence in 2014.
