“Top class”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

Visited for a birthday celebration with friends after a gap of a few tears since our last visit. If anything, the restaurant is even better than I remembered. Very friendly welcome, nice warm atmosphere on a chilly night and a great selection of food and drinks. Really enjoyed a traditional real ale recommended by the staff and then chose my food from the evenings 'specials'. The starter of asparagus covered in Italian prosciutto was divine. Even better was to follow with the best slow cooked lamb joint I have tasted for a long, long time. This was accompanied by a nice individual serving of nicely cooked vegetables. I finished with generous and well presented selection of cheeses and biscuits together with some excellent plump grapes. Not over priced but not cheap either. If you believe that you usually get what you pay for, this is really good value for money. The quality of the food on offer is what makes it stand out. It is not the largest venue so booking is advisable. Visit and experiment a bit. You won't be disappointed.

“One of the best in Derbyshire”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

We went to the White Bear last night for a birthday celebration. As ever, both the service and the food were first class. The menu was extensive and varied, with something for everyone.

If you're looking for a gourmet dining experience in an intimate setting you will do no better in Derbyshire than the White Bear at Stretton... and the prices are quite reasonable too!

“Excellent Food, and Great Atmosphere”
Reviewed March 11, 2013

We went to the White Bear last night, on Mothers Day. The venue is clean, and tidy with a lovely cosy, home from home atmosphere.

There was a good choice of starters, mains and deserts. All food was cooked beautifully - No criticisms at all. We had a member of our party who has specific dietary requirements; gluten free & allergic to dairy! - Although the menu didn’t cater for this type of requirement they did cook her food to suit.

The pub isn't child friendly, they don't have changing facilities and we did have to take our own high chair. However, they were more than accommodating, and created a child friendly dish for him to eat. - Thank you!

I was very surprised the pub was practically empty as the food and atmosphere scores 5/5.
The only reason I have gave the overall score of 4/5 is with us having to take our own highchair. Maybe they would have been busier on Mothers Day if their target audience was families?

We will definitely be visiting again, as like I say the food and atmosphere was great & I feel these kinds of places are very few and far between.

“Good homely coking”
Reviewed February 24, 2013 via mobile

We visited as a party of 10. Staff were attentive and friendly. A little too much choice if anything . Food was good, but it was served on cold plates, and by the time all the mains had arrived my meal was quite cold. The accompaniments were great, sliced potatoes and vegetables - all really well cooked. The restaurant is really comfortable and cosy and well worth a visit, not cheap but good honest god for a special occasion

“Good Gastro Pub Food”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

The white bear was chosen by a friend as a place where we could enjoy a nice meal and catch up. The food was very nice, the service attentive, but not exceptional.
The wines (I Felt) were somewhat over priced, but overall I felt it was good food, served well and at a fair price.
The restaurant has stripped pine tables and there are no menus as such, the server tells you the specials and the rest is on blackboard
Overall it just works, but without being very special. So it's good....and I don't want to damn with faint praise, so if you want great food try it out
