A group of 8 of us visited recently and all had a fantastic meal. Its certainly not the cheapest place around but the quality of all our courses was excellent.

The menu is the first thing you see as you enter the place on a large blackboard which if you have a memory issue in retaining what you want, can be an issue as you sit and have a drink!!

Our group had a selection of started including mussels in a tomato sauce, chicken pate, king prawns - all were excellent with the most expensive around £7.

The service was prompt and efficient with all our food arriving together for all the courses.

For the mains we again had a variety including the cod, scallops, sea bass in shrimp sauce, rack of lamb and chicken. All were exquisite and presented perfectly with a selection of vegetables and potatoes accompanying the mains.

Again a wide selection of sweets were on offer all at around £5 with cheese/biscuits slightly more expensive.

All in all the meal cost us £270 with that including drinks for all 8 of us which worked out around £34 a head which might be seen as pricey but nearly all of us had 3 courses and we did have quite a bit of drink as well!!

We'd definitely recommend the White Bear for its food and relaxed atmosphere and we'll return soon.

Based on the below reviews we were expecting great things from The White Bear. However, from the moment we called to inform them we would be just a couple of minutes late it was downhill from there. A number of our party were there on time and the rest arrived just 10 minutes later but still this was not good enough and on arrival were told that if we had not ordered immediately we would miss our slot in the oven and would have to wait until 10pm. None of this had been mentioned at time of booking and despite travelling over 60 miles were told they could not possibly wait until we arrived just a few minutes late for our booking.

On arrival we were jumped on immediately at the door and were not given time to take our coats off or even look at the menu. Staff then stood staring at us in order for us to make our choice immediately.

The restaurant was not even half full and the majority of people in there were drinking and not even there for a meal. We were informed again that they only had one oven, which for a restaurant with such good reviews seems ridiculous, and they could only accommodate certain people at certain times.

When the food arrived, our last-minute choice wasn't as great as we had been led to believe. We were served one bowl of chips between our party which was not really a suitable accompaniment to the meals we had chosen. Two of us chose the pork loin, which was actually a pork chop and not what we were expecting. Regardless, it was tough and dry and had we known we would have made alternative choices, particuarly when paying £14 per meal. However the lamb was nice and can't fault that.

Overall, The White Bear is rather over priced and their customer service skills leave much to be desired. It was disappointing to be met with such disregard, even when we had given them fair notice of our slight delay and they didn't even require our table for another party after us.

The building is lovely and the atmosphere was good but our main concern lies with customer service/pricing and feel this needs to be improved.

We have been driving past this place quite regularly and never realised that there was this little gem hidden away. This place really looks like a old man smokers pub from outside and maybe a few years ago it was, however now, how we were wrong!!
Fantastic food, fantastic service!! Good choice of menu, though the chalkboard is a strange place, infront of the carpark door, slighty awkard. And our meal only came with veg and chips, maybe boiled or mash with seabass? (small criticism)

Really enjoyed the night!! We will most certainly return!!
