“Impressive structure, but area around the castle is not great.”
Reviewed May 27, 2014

Read some good reviews of the castle on Tripadvisor so decided to take a trip. The castle itself is very impressive, but closed and there is no access. Entrance to castle carpark is badly signposted; drove past it once. Grounds around the castle could be nicely done up but minimally maintained. There was a nice park nearby in which there was a play area, bouncy castles, etc.., but as no dogs allowed so we couldn't go in. Ended up leaving early and heading over to Penshaw, which was more fun for the kids.

“Lovely for walk with the kid and dark just needs money investing.”
Reviewed December 31, 2013

This castle is beautiful but it's such a shame to see it go to waste. It isn't even lit up anymore. I often walk the dogs here and the children love it too but it could be so much more. I think sunderland council should invest some money into making more of this hidden treasure as it has so much potential,

“A sad history, and a demise”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

The renovation work has been well done, though only the entrance way and the chapel remain. Has many dark stories of ghosts attached to it. Featured on Time Team

“Hylton Castle”
Reviewed June 5, 2013

Beautiful old castle in lovely grounds. The castle does battle reenactments and has a summer programme of events available from the tourist information office or the local press. The castle is next to a large playground and has lovely walks through the dene down to a large lake. It has a great cycle path. Well worth a visit.
