“Lovely place to take the kids !”

Great museum for kids which is free and makes a great day out especially if the weather is good and you can visit the grounds of Mowbray Park. The winter gardens are great for kids to explore with giant tropical plants and koi in the stream below. There is a lovely restaurant and a gift shop. All in all a good educational day out for the kids.

“worth a visit”
Reviewed May 5, 2014

The museum is very good but the Winter gardens are a little disappointing. The complex has a good restaurant which unfortunately is often empty. Enjoy the museum but don't build your expectations up for the Winter Gardens.

“Well worth a visit - and it's FREE!”
Reviewed May 3, 2014

I started my visit by walking round the lovely Mowbray Park, and made it inside the Winter Gardens just as thick fog descended (I’d planned it well!)

Entrance to the Winter Gardens and Museum is FREE. You can leave a donation if you wish.

The Greenhouse is like a mini Kew Gardens! There’s a seat near the Koi carp where you can sit and enjoy your surroundings, if you need to rest awhile. You can climb (or take the lift, when it’s working) and look at the plants from the walkway above. I'd recommend taking your camera with you!

The museum is fascinating. There are displays on things from the prehistoric past to the present day, about coal making and shipbuilding and pottery, and much, much more. I enjoyed the art gallery, particularly the Lowry exhibition. I didn’t have enough time here to see everything, so need to come back and see the bits I missed!

I did find time for a cup of coffee and a cake in the cafe, and can recommend the bakewell tart (brought to my table by very friendly and efficient staff)!

Well worth a visit.

“Not the Eden Project, but OK (and FREE)”
Reviewed April 15, 2014

I'm basing this review on the Winter Garden section and leaving the museum for another day. After walking round the excellent Mowbray Park in which the Museum and Winter Gardens are situated we welcomed a bit of warmth in the greenhouse. The gardens are set out to take advantage of the sun and have desert conditions on one section and varying temperatures and light levels as you move further away from the sun. Because of this there are a surprising number of exhibits here. Educational labels and boards give useful information and we learned quite a lot about food plants.
Above the 'jungle' there is a walkway that lets you look down on the plants. This is really well done and there is a lift for those not able to manage the steps.
Next door along is a reasonably priced cafe. A great option for a rainy/cold day in Sunderland.
