Solar Dos Canavarros
Ranked #2 of 2 Hotels in Sabrosa
Reviewed June 14, 2012

My wife and I stayed at Solar Dos Canavarros and have only wonderful memories of our days there and at Sabrosa as a whole. The hotel staff were very helpful and pleasant. We would likely go back to this hotel when we revisit this hometown of the greatest mariner of all time, Fernao de Magalhaes.

Was dumped here by Rent Douro Tours - over a half hour from the Regua region that was advertised. Hotel was run down and in need of repairs. Room was disgustingly filthy - stain on wall in corner, dirty decorative pillows, white stains all over comforter and spare blanket, cheap furniture, broken lights in hallways, crowbar damage to room door and frame, dead bird on balcony, mark still on window where it hit. Meals were not edible (dinner was horribly overcooked, breakfast eggs were powdered and brown, rolls and croissants were stale) - we actually opted to go for pizza rather than eat the free lunch the next day. Town is in the middle of nowhere, and we walked the entire town in five minutes. Outdoor pool area furniture covered in bird droppings. I would not wish this place on my worst enemy. Complaints to the hotel were forwarded to Rent Douro Tours, and Rent Douro Tours refused to listen to any complaints.

AVOID RENT DOURO TOURS AND SOLAR DOS CANAVARROS HOTEL AT ALL COSTS!!

Room Tip: Tip to find a good room? Try a different hotel....

We stayed there for two weeks in June. Not much to say about hotel. Rooms are small, plain, and not very well kept. However, this is not the reason why I would leave a negative review. The fact that someone on our second last day there, went through all our personal belongings, clothing, gifts, which they unwrapped, it looked to us that we were robbed, everything was all over the place, however, upon further investigation we saw nothing was taken, could it be that this was because the only currency we had in the room was travelers checks? The front desk assured us that besides our cards and housekeeping's, no cards were swiped to gain access, so!!! who went in? According to the woman in charge it was a mystery!! No doors or windows were broken, they claim only the housekeeping went in that day, so would who was it? We received no apology, just a simple we don't know who would go through your belongings, unwrap gifts and leave everything a complete mess... well neither do we, but if it quacks like a duck, then it's a duck. This hotel is being run by people who lack any sort of customer service skills and definitely by people who like to snoop through guests belongings. Do not stay here, i know we won't but besides this no other problems to advise off.

I stayed in this hotel one night (June of 2008). The rooms are good and the hotel has common enchanting spaces. There is a pretty swimming pool in the open air. The restaurant is not special at all nevertheless it will be your choice because there is no another restaurant near. The hotel is in the Douro Region but you must have a car to go to the tourist principal places and farms. The streets take bad lighting at night as what is not very advisable to travel at night. It is a quite nice hotel for groups and families. It is a good value but if you will be able to spend more money, you have many better options in the Douro Region.

It's too normal. Nothing to say about it. It is an old building but not a particularly beautiful one. The location really hasn't much to it. The building was added with a lot of new rooms that are a little too much and in doubtful taste. The service wasn't very good and by no way made you feel at home, so... It's not bad but... it's realy a budget hotel with an expensive cost.
