“Better than previous but still needs a tune up !”
Reviewed May 12, 2014

Revisited the cafe after a previous shocker dinner in the restaurant last year .

Found food superior to the main restaurant although the service was a let down .

To me it was clearly evident certain staff lack training -whatever happened to good old fashion manners ?

Hopefully management take constructive criticism on board -with a tune up this place could really sing .

“Noisy, mediocre food, great views”
Reviewed April 30, 2014

We were looking for somewhere different and special for family member's 60 birthday. The booking staff were kind enough to agree to reserve an outside table for us. We were excited by the website and some of the reviews.

NOTE: Be clear whether you are booking their cafe (House of Rabbit) or their restaurant. The menu and kitchen are separate. We chose the cafe/bistro because we were a large group (15) including primary school aged kids and thought the setting would be more appropriate.

When we arrived, the reception by the staff was disorganised and inattentive. Whilst we booked ahead and it was a sunny Sunday and therefore busy, I agree with other reviewers that the place is understaffed.

The setting is beautiful, overlooking the bay, across large tracts of grass. But the dining environment is noisy and the music too loud even for outdoor seating. (We were on the veranda.)

The kitchen service was slow. An hour to wait for meals. The staff inattentive - brought water once when asked but never again for the 2 hours that we were there.

The food was patchy. Some meals were reasonable - fish batter was crunchy and the chips well-cooked but a bit pricey - adult size for three pieces $27, kids meal one piece $12). The slow cooked beef pie was tasty $24. But the tasting plate $22 was atrociously inadequate and lacking in flavour; the dill infused rainbow trout was measly and had no taste, the three smoked duck pieces were no bigger than three bandaids. I could go on. The Portarlington Mussels $20 were fresh and there were close to 10 in the dish but the wine sauce was either undercooked or the quality of the wine used was poor.

Yes, million dollar views but you are paying for them. We vowed not to visit again for the food or service or dining experience. Maybe for the views but that would be all.

Thank you for expressing your views on your visit to the House of Jack Rabbit, cellar door and casual cafe, appreciated. The House of Jack Rabbit is a casual, cafe-style venue onsite and we are very proud of it. I cannot apologise for the noise - happily, we must be doing something right b/c we do get very busy, usually with people chatting, laughing and having a great time. I do have to reinforce the fact here as well that it is a casual cafe, we are not promising full table service - the normal procedure is for patrons to come up and order at the counter and there are water stations situation around the premises for guests to refill whenever they wish. Re. the fish & chips, it is actually a seafood platter so has fish, calamari and prawns on it as well as salad and chips. I will pass your thoughts on the value onto the chefs but we usually get comments about how filling it is and how delicious/good value. The children's fish & chips, yes, comprises one decent sized piece of freshly battered local fish, with chips. It is a kids meal. Re. the Tasting Plate, I will also pass your comments on with a view to analysing and improving it but all components are house marinated and smoked onsite and it is designed to be just that, a Tasting Plate, not a 'I can't move I'm so full' meal. Glad to hear you liked the home made pie! Also, delighted to hear that you thought the views were great, they most certainly are.
Thank you again for your feedback. I hope you can take my response into consideration and perhaps consider visiting us again. Cheers, Lyndsay Sharp (Owner/General Manager).

“Good food...but a disappointment”
Reviewed April 23, 2014

We had booked lunch in the restaurant as we wanted to splurge a bit and have a change from cafe style food. I should have known that it was going to be an ordinary experience when we had to wait several minutes to be seated. Things went down hill from there.

Clearly the owners/managers had under estimated the number of customers they would be having as there were only two waitresses who were run off their feet, however they maintained their poise and friendliness despite the difficult circumstances.

The restaurant has magnificent views but the acoustics are dreadful and you can hardly hear yourself think let alone carry on a decent conversation with your dining companions. We opted to go outside and sit on the deck which was much quieter, but clearly not the restaurant experience I was after - maybe we should have gone to the jack Rabbit Cafe instead.

We were shown to our table and about 15 minutes later we were able to order drinks. We skipped the entree and decided on a mains and maybe dessert afterwards. I had the kingfish and my mother a delicious chicken dish. Both meals were wonderful however we did wait over one hour for our meals to arrive. We decided not to stay for dessert.

Would I go again and could I recommend to friends and family, no. This was not the restaurant experience that I was after.

Thank you for submitting your comments re. your experience at Jack Rabbit Vineyard, appreciated. Delighted to hear you loved the food! Re. the accoustics, we are working on that and are in the process of implementing additional sound absorbing measures. Having said that, there is a fine line b/w the 'good' noise of a busy, clattery restaurant and noise that is too 'noisy' but we are working hard to get it right! I have passed your comments onto Floor staff with a view to always improving. Thank you again and I do hope you decide to come and visit us again. Cheers, Lyndsay (Owner/General Manager)
