“A bit disappointing for the price...”
Reviewed December 14, 2012

Positive: Beautiful location and nice, traditional Norwegian, decor. Friendly staff. The swimming pool, turkish bath and fitness are good. Everything was clean.
Negative: my bathroom was really tiny. Most of my colleagues did not have any hot water for the first day (evening and next morning) and the deduction offered for this was ridiculous: NOK 130, approx USD 25. The food was mediocre and service during our sit-down dinner really slow (over half an hour between each course...). Signposting outside and inside the hotel was lacking, so we wasted a lot of time trying to find our way around.

Room Tip: My room, 324, was a good size and quiet, but the bathroom was really tiny.

We booked two twin bedded interconnecting rooms for 2 nights which worked well for our family with 2 grown children. Hotel is full of character and staff on reception very helpful. Spa was much appreciated and outdoor hot tub was fun. Beds very comfortable but lighting in the room was very dim even by hotel standards and still using energy inefficient bulbs. For people from UK everything in Norway is expensive so in this context it was fair value using the 'lastminute' rate on the hotel website. The one meal we had in the brasserie was excellent.

This hotel is magnificent. Perfect location ( marvellous views, central and close to the station)

Originally a very stylish sanatorium it is now a superbly classy hotel, retaining tradition but up to the minute facilities. Food very special indeed - especially the cold choice on the buffet.

And exceptional staff who will go the extra mile.

I want to go back.

We stayed here for one night, on route to Oslo. The hotel has old world charm, traditional norwegian style wooden building. The interior is in keeping with the style, and its very near Geilo train station (2min walk) with luggage might be a little longer.

We got of the train, and the hotel had sent a car to pick us up which we were not expecting but were delighted all the same. The room was spacious, nice heated bathroom floors, good quality shampoo. Geilo was nice and quite and as were coming towards the end of our holiday, it was really nice to stay somewhere quiet and comfortable. We slept really well, good beds and decent pillows.

The service in this hotel was something else, as I am vegetarian we had asked for vegetarian food to be provided in the evening meal, my husband does eat some fish but not me. there was a mix up and the hotel was expecting 2 fish eaters. We mentioned this to the lady in the dining room, she quickly arranged for some changes, the waitress then come and gave us our 4 course menu one for veggie and one for the fish. I was really glad that they checked the menu with us to make sure that we were happy before they prepared it, my husband did not want to have the shellfish soup, and he opted for the leek and potato soup as well, this too was no problem.

The food was really good, and i got to say that this was the best veggie meal i had in Norway.
given the short notice, i could see that the chef had taken time to consider the meal and i did not feel like an after thought. The breakfast next day was equally good, with a good choice of breads, yoghurts etc.

I would highly recommend this hotel, the service is excellent, the food it good, and the place is beautiful. Normally I tend to prefer more modern hotels, however this hotel bucks my trend.

We only stayed here for 1 night on our tour of Norway but found it very friendly and had a comfortable stay. The evening buffet was outstanding.

This is a very large old building which makes it quite unique. It even has a bowling alley although we did not see it.

Our room was clean and comfortable.

Great hotel to visit in summer when prices are fairly low, and you want a bit of luxury.
We stayed for one night on our way through. As Geilo is a winter sports place, this hotel has special offers in the summer season, when there’s not so much to do in the area.

Our kids loved the pool area with heated pools and and bubble baths – even one outside. But they had definitely grown too old for the kids areas, than turned out to be a couple of very small underequipped rooms suitable for 2-4 year olds. It seems like the hotel wants to appear “child friendly”, they even have a special child check-in place in the reception, but doesn’t quite manage. They advertised special programs for children during the day, but as we just stayed the one night, we didn’t get the opportunity to check that out.

The hotel is a wooden and very charming huge building from 1909. They have put a lot of effort in to security in case of fire, which was very reassuring.
We were a bit surprised that of all the staff we got in touch with, none spoke Norwegian (mostly other Scandinavian languages and English).
We had a big family room, separate bedroom - a bit noisy when those living at the floor above us came home after midnight, but otherwise ok.
Great breakfast, but I wish they had told us when we made the reservation that booking half pension would be much cheaper than buying dinner in the restaurant after arrival.
All in all a good experience!

The hotel is very nice. Dr. Holms hotel expects geusts during the the winter months as it is a ski resort, however, it is comfortable in the summer as well. If you really enjoy hiking, there are a few places to hike near glaciers and on rocks, but they're not that incredibly scenic or interesting and paths often lead up and expect hikers to turn around and return down, rather than leading anywhere or allowing for an alternate route down. The room is small and the hotel is warm in the summer, but you cannot open the window without lifting the entire pullout bed, which someone was trying to sleep on! Serious downgrade was that breakfast only went until 10. The breakfast was good (orange squeezing machine for orange juice yum), but after a long day of hiking and a late night, it was not easy to make it to breakfast on time, and why make travelers (including the jetlagged) rush? We expected the spa to be a bonus, but it was far too expensive to go to at all. Every item on the spa menu was at least 250 kr (over $100!) and there were no cheaper options. The hot tubs (one inside, one outside) were nice, however they only bubbled for 10 minutes and then had a 10 minute cleaning period, so you really couldn't enjoy more than a 10 minute soak in the summer's empty pool area because the jets turned off! There were nice options for dinner- a buffet, a bar-like restaurant, and an american 50s style bowling ally. All the restaurants were expensive, though....

Room Tip: Be sure to specify how many people you want in a room v how many beds. Two brothers want beds separa...
