This was our fourth visit, and Bjåen fjellstove never fails us! The scenery, the hosting couple, the athmosphere, the food and the rooms - everything is more than perfect.

We spent one night there, travelling with another couple. As 'usual' we got the room which once was occupied by King Haakon VII and Queen Maud. Spacious, clean and cosy! A new feature this time was the envelope with some information about the room's history and the artefacts on the walls. Interesting indeed!

We were served a three-course dinner and a rich breakfast the next morning. Everything local, eco-friendly and delicious!

Already looking forward to coming back!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Bjåen Fjellstove. The Swiss styled house has been lovingly restored in the picturesque mountain setting near Hovden. The location is perfect for taking easy hikes and guests are welcomed to use the lake for boat trips and fishing. The house has been decorated with rustic charm and each room has its own personal touch. We stayed in a room with a view of the lake and mountains. The room next door to us has its own balcony and this was where King Haakon and Queen Maud stayed before the house was relocated to its present location. The rooms have their own sink and there are shared shower and toilet facilities. The kitchen boasts a range of meals made from local and organic produce. For dinner, in the spacious dining room, we enjoyed an entrée of local soft goat cheese fried with walnuts and honey and goat cheese with tomato and basil. The main course was moose (perfectly cooked) and fresh vegetables served with brown and mountain cranberry sauce. To finish we enjoyed rhubarb soup with strawberries and vanilla ice cream. The homely lounge area has been attentively furnished with an array of antiquities and was a great place to relax and unwind in the evening.

Bjåen Fjellstove was recommended to me by a friend, and I can understand why having now stayed there. It was just like visiting a friend or relative.

The guest house is an old building decorated in a traditional style and when you arrive it feels like you are being welcomed into someone's home. This really appeals to me as I have had enough of faceless hotel chains from travelling with work, and look for something more authentic when travelling for pleasure. It's always nice to meet real local people.

The welcome we received was warm (much more genuine than at many chain hotels I have experienced), and we fairly quickly felt ourselves at home. After being shown the guest house, told about what to do in the area and then shown up to the room, we were free to come and go as we pleased. To be honest we were not at all demanding, being there to relax, and it was nice to be able to relax and feel at home without being bothered or being bothersome.

The room was simple, and traditionally decorated in keeping with the rest of the guest house. There was a wash hand basin in the room, but the toilet and shower were shared. This was not a big deal as we knew this in advance. If anything it just added to the charm. As did the lack of TV in the room. We didn't go to just sit in the room and watch TV!

I was a bit concerned at first that the room was close to the road, but there was almost no traffic at night. Or if there was I didn't hear anything as I slept very soundly!

The breakfasts were typically Norwegian with bread, cheeses, eggs, cold meats and so on. There was a focus on local produce and organic food, and the goat's cheese and apple juice were especially good. We ate plenty to set us up for long hikes in the mountains.

Bjåen Fjellstove is situated by a lake in the mountains just north of Hovden i Setesdal. The scenery is quite stunning, with plenty of fresh air and lots of opportunities for hiking (our main reason for going). We were told that the lake is very good for fishing but didn't try it ourselves, although we did eat some excellent locally caught trout. We weren't brave enough to test the lake temperature with a swim, but the water did look very clean and clear.

The things we liked best were the character of the guest house, the genuinely warm welcome and good service we received, the scenery and the opportunities for hiking. This place would not appeal to those who like mini bars, big TVs, sports clubs and lots of marble and glass in their hotels, but for those seeking to get away from it all to a genuine, homely place for relaxation and fresh air I would strongly recommend a trip to Bjåen Fjellstove.
