“An house in the wood”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 25, 2013

It seems to stay in an american landscape of Far West or in a canadian wood.
There is also a copy of a tent similar to that of the native american indians.
In the proximity you can follow the course of a small river in the forest and you can meet easily some reindeer. A place out of the world close to the end of the world (Europe).
Gargia Fjallutsue in the reality is 24 km far from the unimpressive city of Alta and probably is a choice you can remind more than the standard hotel in the city. It is also at a moderate altitude and I imagine how white could be the landscape during the winter season.
It features some cottages. Some of them are small flat, fully equipped with kitchen. All build in a wooden rustic architecture. Nice and simple.
You can eat in the very clean and simple restaurant. Not so lively but with the atmosphere of a mountain baita. Food is at the same time simple, acceptable and very cheap for the norwegian standard.
Also the lodge is enough cheap, so if you like this kind of atmosphere is enough appealing. The service level is simple too but the ladies managing the structure are very kind.
At the end Gargia Fjellstue could appear at a first impression a sad place in the middle of nowhere but the natural ambiance is beatiful and the genuine atmosphere is rewarding.

Very clean - charming place. The owners will go the "last mile" to accommodate your needs. Food is excellent, and there are nice walks in the woods to a waterfall. Highly recommend it over city of Alta hotels.

Stayed here for one night only in the summer. The staff was very friendly and helpful, as others have pointed out. We had a small separate cottage, which was next to a pen for a dozen or so dogs. Fortunately, the dogs were very well behaved and didn't make a racket to keep us awake.

The cottage was a bit dated but comfortable. The cleaning, though, was a little off the mark. We found old, stale and rotten food left in the cupboards and fridge - complete with mold etc. The shower was working, but the floor seemed to slop the wrong way, so the floor got flooded.

We booked a breakfast for 8 euros (cheap for Norway), and it was about as basic as you could get and still call it breakfast. There was enough of it in the buffet, at least, so we didn't go hungry - but could've made the same with cereal, instant coffee and bread in our room. We were disappointed, having read about the great food in the place. Sadly, we didn't get a chance to try the evening meal due to late arrival (although the staff offered to go out of their way to feed us even that late).

Nice out of the way location for hikes, some of which were pointed out to us complete with maps provided. Even a GPS was available.

I imagine this would be a nice place to visit for winter snow.

Room Tip: If the separate cottages are in use in the winter, I can't imagine they would be very warm with...

You will need a vehicle to get to Gargia from Alta city centre (just over 30 min drive) but you are staying in cabins literally at the foot of the plateau with easy access to hike/bicycle in the summer or cross country ski, snowshoe, dog sled, snowmobile and so on in the winter... and if you are looking for a perfect spot to see the northern lights away from the light pollution, this is it!

There's so much to do and the welcome is extremely warm and friendly. We had a leak in the bathroom during our stay which was promptly fixed with courtesy use of the sauna thrown in!

It was quiet, cosy and clean, anything we needed a solution was found straight away (extra extension plug and linen) and we enjoyed the home cooked food. We were more than happy with the value for money and can't wait to find an excuse to re-book!

Room Tip: We now always ask for the same cabin with the separate twin bedroom

Family run lodge with outstandingly friendly people, and the location is breathtaking. If you're looking for a taste of 'real' Norway then this place is unmissable. Expect to see chunky Norse woodsmen, complete with traditional hunting knives and manly knitwear, and a lot of sled dogs. Local food specialities are strong on reindeer meat (just don't mention Rudolph), fish and game.
You can catch your own supper if you're lucky at ice-fishing.
Trekking over the snow in snow shoes is harder than it looks, but worth the effort - there are guided night walks from the lodge.

Room Tip: Rooms are grouped inside large wooden chalets, all equally warm and cosy.
