“Experience the True North”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2013

I spent 7 months here and i have nothing but good thing to say about this place! If you are around Alta you should definitely visit this place, even if it is only for a day.
At Holmen Husky they can provide just the trip you are looking for.
Ice-fishing, seeing moose, northern lights and learning more about the Sami culture are just a few of the things you can enjoy. But of course all these things are just bonuses, the real magic happens when you are spending time with the Huskies, and i can promise you, they will for ever be in your heart!

“Going to the Dogs”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2013

The husky has taken its place beside the Labrador as my joint favourite dog breed, and an excellent place to see them at work is the Holmen Hundsenter

There’s an opportunity to photograph the dogs; friendly creatures all, if somewhat noisy. Before seeing them at work, though, we were served a cup of hot blueberry juice, inside a traditional ‘laavu’, while the owner, Eirik Nilsen, talked about his dogs, and explained how they prepare for the Finnmarksløpet race, over 600 miles; Europe’s longest dog race.

The main attraction was a 20 minute ride through the woods on a dog sled. The fact that it was snowing made it an even more enjoyable experience. Visitors can either ride in the sled as passengers or, if feeling really intrepid, drive it themselves. They do stipulate, though, that parties are made up of a driver and passenger (they can, of course, change over halfway) who must be known to each other.

“Magical 5 Day Dog Sled Tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2013

Holmen Huskeys is an extremely well organised business, with first class facilities, many new or upgraded to an excellent standard. It is obvious from the minute you arrive these people know what they are doing and that you are in good hands.
They have the experience and expertise to ensure the tour is enjoyable in every way. Firstly excellent facilities, as mentioned, clothing is suited for extreme weather conditions, which can suddenly occur, dogs are outstanding and beautiful, instructions are good, and leaders excellent.
However usually the guests are so engrossed in their new adventure, the often forget the detailed instructions given for their saftey. It is imperative to be aware of the sequence things should happen. There is a reason for the instructions, listen and help each other, makes for a great trip.
The quietness, and stunningly beautiful scenery, changeable weather conditions, good company and good facilities along the way, locally produced food, usually, add to the experience.
The clothing, boots, socks, gloves provided by people who understand the conditions. You only need scarves, good underclothes, googles or glasses, maybe a pair of gloves to wear under the leather wool lined mittens provided, for added warmth.
Eirik Holmen has built "lavus" with clear plastic above the bed so you can look out and hopefully see the Northern Lights!! Beds are comfortable, the best of sleeping bags, electric blankets, woodfired heaters in each lavu, just perfect to get in the mood for the adventure, or slowly unwind and say good bye to your trusty, loyal, hard working 4 legged friends. You have the opportunity to help with the feeding of the dogs also.
Eirik and his helpers have plenty to be proud of, good luck, and I hope you see the Northern Lights to cap it all off!!
