It's a great experience to walk along those carvings made for several thousand years ago. Beautifully made walkways lead you around, with good info-material that you get at the entrance. As a bonus you enjoy a marvellous view at the Alta fjord.
Interesting exhibitions at the museum building about rock carvings and local history.
Well worth the money for the entrance which is not too much in Norwegian terms.

We crossed Alta on our way to Finland and we stopped at the museum. The rock carvings are very impressive and quite extended. It's hard to think that a prehistoric civilization could develop in such difficult living conditions. The natural site itself is worth the visit.

unesco protected area. VERY interesting. Situated at the bottom of a fjord- I can understand that people from the stone age settled here.

Really worth a visit - we had a guide show our group some of the carvings. They're working to remove the red pigment that was put to mark them out as UNESCO has said it's not authentic. The guide told us what some of them meant but a lot is still left for you to interpret in your own way which is nice.
