This is a superb small exhibit highlighting some fascinating "preistoric" rock art along the fjord side south of Alta. Definitely worth a few hours. Excellent shop. Noticed the Museum has closed for rennovation recently. Not sure why, seemed fine to me.

The Rock Art of Alta is on the UNESCO list. The largest site is at Hjemmeluft. This site is co-located with the premises of Alta Museum. The Rock Art area as well as the museum itself is well designed. A wooden walking path guide you through the open air rock cavings. Guiding is available in both Norwegian and English. Exiting to watch and a lot of interesting information. A vistit is recommended.

You can walk by yourself and look at the rock drawings or yoy can use a guide. We had a guide and it was nice experience.
It is easy to follow the wooden path around the area to see the different rock drawings. Its amazing to see how the change in different areas.
My favorite: The skier

Althoug Alta Museum is a bit far out of town it is a wonderful setting, although i was very happy there was a good cafe , clean and efficent ,,,

The Rock drawings are set on a wonderful path, that if you have time is well worth the walk around , the path also takes you nearly down to the water side and along some boat houses ..
well worth the wark , even in mild rain,,

You can see why the place won the museum of the year award in 1993.

and the staff at the 'help ' desk are very helpful , they even got me a taxi back ,,,, ( yes! i did have to pay ... but )
