I prefer the Spa side which has modern, well air conditioned and rather spacey rooms. It has inside tunnel to the old part of the hotel. It has very unique rooms, all different of shape and size but in the new side all is standardized.

We stayed just one night at Valtionhotelli in Imatra during our Eastern Finland trip, so I can't write a comprehensive review.

The old castle like building is very comfortable and has some old time romantic atmosphere. Our superior room was not very large, but big enough for too, and the balcony with a canal view was fantastic,

However, the lack of real air conditioning was not justified in my opinion in a room of this price. There was small table fan in our room, but even that stopped working in the middle of the night.

The breakfast was decent, nothing special, and not any local treats you might expect from Lake Saimaa.

However, I'd probably visit here again if returning the town, as there doesn't seem to be in any other hotel in Imatra either.

Room Tip: Get a room with a view on the canal from the higher floors.

My parents and I were planning to stay in Helsinki in the middle of March but because of some sad reasons we had canceled that trip. Anyway, we wanted to spend a nice weekend in the end of March, but not to go far from Russian-Finnish border control (since this procedure itself takes a lot of time cause of Russian awful bureaucracy).
So, we randomly (really) chose Imatra.
Castle-fashioned hotel "took" my mind and we decided to go here. And this is my best hotel choice I have ever done!
Perfect staff, extremely good restaurant (at weekends don't forget to book a table for dinner at check in, there was plenty of people there at 7 p.m.) with very tasty meals and various breakfast in the morning.
We were living in SPA-building since we took triple room, but as we understood this fact doesn't make your stay any kind differ than in castle itself. We had superior room with canyon view. Very good-furnitured and very quiet.
The only minus was that we were in the and of the building so WiFi was very low, even you need to pay for it 2.5 euro/day =(

But, all in all my parents and I want to say many thanks to all staff of this hotel. My mom said that she wants to come back again and again.

PS My parents will go with their friends in August ;)

Got a double at the new spa hotel connected to the old Imatranhovi by an underground tunnel. The new and the old hotel are from two different worlds. The lobby of the new hotel looked really depressing. Maybe that is why the reception is in the old side. The room looked nice, but the bath tub was loose and I almost knocked the fridge over as there was no back at the cupboard. On the other hand, who needs a bath tub when the room price includes a morning sauna(s), swim and bubbles in the spa! The food in the restaurant was very good, the breakfast average, but the old restaurant space and the view to the sunny river park added the extra point to the breakfast.

The hotel looks very nice, it's a bit like a small castle. Some of the rooms - like mine - are in a "new" building, which isn't as nice as the old building. The hotel is located very near to the famous rapids, so the surroundings are very nice, especially in the summertime.

The hotel is part of the Rantasipi chain which, in my opinion, doesn't highlight enough the uniqueness of the building. Everything (service, breakfast, room) is ok, but could be more as the room price is quite high. But if you like staying in a unique hotel building, reserve a room in the old part!

great location in the center of Imatra - near the russian border.
Amazing view. Like it came from a fairytale. I'm sure that at the summer time it's much more beutiful, so I guess we'll be back)
Food and service were great as well.
One huuuuuge disadvantage - no free wifi. !
