I spent several hours at the Daintree Discovery Centre in North Queensland. It was an extremely well done, instructional walk through an ancient natural rainforest region. Wooden walkways and a multi-storied tower took you to all levels of the beautiful green forest around you. You have an extensive hand guide in your detailed Interpretive Guide book as well as an audio guide with a hand-held controller. You have to stop, listen and look closely, often, on this walk or you may think there is nothing much to see other than the lush vegetation, which is really enough of an experience in itself. The forest can be calm and quiet on the forest floor, or buzzing and chaotic as it is in the canopy above the tower. And yet, if you're lucky, you might just see a spider, snake, insect, butterfly or maybe even a cassowary. I happened to look down on the railing beside me and there was a bright green stick bug hanging out beside me. A little girl on the walkway pointed out a hanging sunbird nest to her mother and I asked them about it. I would have totally overlooked this hanging strand of dried grasses and fronds and yet, when I looked closely, there was the perfectly round hole of the nest opening. You will learn as much or as little as you wish about this amazing region by using the guides and your own experience. The more time you have, the better. Relax, walk slowly, use all your senses and at the end, you can relax inside or out in their little coffee shop or browse for a souvenir in their Eco Shop.
