Burton's Sunset Oasis Motel
Reviewed June 25, 2009

We had a wonderful stay at Burton's Sunset Oasis! The room was clean and very comfortable. The setting is beautiful. Not only a picturesque sunset, but perfect hill for viewing the night sky with no light pollution. To get to the motel, as you come to Bay St. Lawrence, instead of turning to Meat Cove, bear right and the motel is up a hill on your right. This spot is very quiet and peaceful, with great views of the village of Bay St. Lawrence and the ocean. Up on the hill behind the motel is perfect star gazing. We had a wonderful time talking with the owner and learning more about the local history. He also helped us with our car, taking us down to the wharf to get oil. He really goes out of his way to make his guests happy. We would highly recommend this motel.

The view. We overlooked mountains, the sea, lake, village, more mountains. It was spectacular. This isn't the Hilton but the bed was good (no fancy linens). The furniture was adequate but this is literally the top of Cape Breton. I'd rather walk out the door and see Mother Nature at her best than have a designer room.TV but no cable but that's okay the two stations were all we needed. No wifi. Bonnie, who runs the motel, was so nice. The room had a stovetop, fridge and microwave which we definitely needed as no restaurants or take away were open. The bathroom was larger than average. We purchased supplies for dinner at the COOP a mile or so from the motel. Bay St. Lawrence is a bit like shangrila. We drove over a mountain and then there was such scenery. Amazing. No plastic signs, no traffic lights. Just nature. It was wonderful. We would stay here again. Please note the photo...if the view was panoramic you would see the sea on the right and the village on the left.

As someone who has stayed three times at Burton's Sunset Oasis, I can confirm that this fine motel is located in one of the most beautiful spots on earth, where nature puts on a wondrous show for free very day and especially at sunset. Spectacular nearby hikes include the climbs to Money Point, Cape St. Lawrence, Sugarloaf Mountain, and Pica Tenerife, and Cape Breton Highlands National Park is just 20 minutes away.

Ever had a two-mile sandy beach all to yourself? Well, you can up in Bay. St. Lawrence: one of the finest beaches in the world -- John Cabot Provincial Park -- is just down the road.

The rooms at Burton's itself are clean, modern, spacious and moderately priced, and you'll not find better, more friendly, or more personal service anywhere. This motel and this entire region can not be more highly recommended.
