“A WONDERFUL REST AT ONE END OF THE EARTH!”

What a wonderful oasis Burton's is! Clean as a bean, with a little kitchen area (in a huge room) for making your morning coffee (if you are up before it is ready along with breakfast choices down at the office). The host is incredibly helpful, friendly as knows the area well. We were camping/moteling the Cabot Trail and were delighted with Burtons and highly recommend the journey!

I just came back from the Bay and must say, it exceeded my expectations. This was my first visit to the area and decided to stay at Burton's for a couple of nights. The view from the motel was breathtaking. Our room was clean and fully equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, dishes, stovetop. Melvin and Debbie were very friendly and know the Bay inside and out and were more than happy to share their stories of the area. There is wi-fi, but no cell service (blessing in disguise), plenty of places to get delicious food and a perfect oasis where natural, raw beauty abounds. Thank you so much Melvin and Debbie. We hope to be back next summer for a longer stay.

Given that we nearly cancelled our reservation upon learning it would take us 3.5-4 hours to reach the motel from the causeway, I can now say it was one of our favorite spots on our tour of Nova Scotia, PEI and New Brunswick. The ride up there is beautiful and there isn't that much traffic but it does take that long to get to Bay of St Lawrence and we drive fairly quickly. No cell service at the motel but there is wi-fi and you can get email off your phone with that or use your computer/tablet. No texting but you can drive down the road toward Sugarloaf for service if you need it.

The Burton's are friendly, helpful hosts, as were all the Canadians we met, and we really enjoyed our visit. As mentioned in other reviews, the accommodations are basic but clean and functional. There are 200 television channels if you like to watch tv (although, never anything on just like everywhere else). We bought snow crabs on the dock (right around the corner) and Mel cooked them for us. I highly recommend getting snow crabs if you are there now - they are delicious! We had 3 and that was more than enough for dinner and two crab rolls the next day! Yum. We also had a lobster roll at The Hut and it was very good.

There is a store in Cape North where you can buy food as well as the co-op in St Margaret. You won't starve up there, which is what my husband thought when he first learned how far north it was!

Hike the Mountain Trail over in Meat Cove. The views are fantastic. It is is quite steep thru most of the woods but it's only about 30 minutes (or less if you can run up!) We also went on a whale watching trip with Oshan and saw about 6-8 pilot whales and dolphins.

If you like nature and have a sense of adventure, go to the top of Cape Breton. You won't be disappointed. Oh, and visit Cabot Landing park/beach in Sugarloaf. Four miles of beautiful beach. One of the highlights of our trip. As with other locations, hardly anyone there that day and it was a beautiful sunny day! I love Canada :)

Room Tip: Only 5 rooms, all facing West for a nice sunset view over the Bay.

The Burtons are dedicated to making your stay at this wonderful location as memorable as possible. This location can't be beat if you like eagles soaring overhead, want to be right where the whale watch boat departs or drive to the beautiful Meat Cove for lunch. A nearby market, a community restaurant and a take out vendor is right there. The rooms are spotless and well equipped. The beds were very comfortable. Mr. Burton will steam your lobsters or crabs, which you can purchase direct off the fisherman's boat at the dock. The location 1/2 way around the Cabot Trail lets you leisurely enjoy the drive by breaking it up for a two day experience. Oh, by the way, the wi-fi is very strong.

Room Tip: Room #4 has two beds

For years I have longed to visit Cape Breton Island and drive the Cabot Trail. As we reached the top we accidentally took a road that took us off the trail and led us to The St. Lawrence Bay. I had wanted to visit here as it is at the very tip of the Island but we had planned to get around the tip and overnight it elsewhere along the route ... that is until we drove into the town and spotted the "Burton's Oasis Sunset Motel" sitting high on the hill. We had seen the signs along the road and decided to see if they had a room available. We met Melvin & Debbie and yes they had a room available. After a tour we were more than happy to move in for the night. We settled in and made our way to the muskoka chairs on the hill to take in the marvelous views of the ocean. We couldn't believe our luck, this was truly bliss! We laid out a blanket and had a picnic followed by an attempt at kite flying all the while marveling in the beauty and serenity that surrounded us. Later in the evening we, along with other guests gathered at the picnic table to enjoy a fresh lobster dinner while watching the gorgeous sunset. The dinner was "amazing" the company and conversation delightful and the sunset most memorable. We stayed out late into the evening and as the sky darkened the stars came out in full force .. in fact, just before we retired for the night we spotted the milky way .. was really something. Morning came and it was tempting to stay another night but we had to keep moving. After going on a whale watching tour that Mel arranged for us we reluctantly left this piece of paradise. A big thank you to our hosts Melvin & Debbie for making our stay a most pleasant and memorable one.
PS Later that evening and hundreds of miles away from Buront's, I realized I had left my phone charger adapter behind. I emailed Burton's and Debbie replied right away saying they would have a look for it. Today it arrived to me in Ontario by mail .. Thank you Debbie "-"

Room Tip: All of the rooms face the ocean so you can't go wrong ... ENJOY!

I would put Burton's Sunset Oasis at the top of the list of places we have stayed in the last 10 days in Nova Scotia. There may be few, if any, restaurants around (depending on the time of year) but there is a small kitchen in the room as well as a takeout joint down the road that will deliver. And if you make advance arrangements owners Mel and Debbie Burton will cook a lobster dinner ($15) and serve it in your room. The place is spotless and the service superb. We had a minor problem with the flat screen TV (turned out to be a programming issue) and both Mel and Debbie were immediately there to fix it. They have apparently resolved the issue with the lack of channels with a new satellite system. I quit counting at 150 channels. But forget the TV, the view from the motel, located atop a hill, is spectacular. We spent two nights there and saw the owner outside often. He always asked if we needed anything. Breakfast in the office isn't much (toast and coffee, but there is always the kitchenette, if you plan ahead. The sunsets are spectacular.

This was the perfect place for us after a day on the Cabot Trail. We arrived before the season began so we had no problem getting two rooms. The manager was very friendly, helpful and went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed. He even offered to get supper for us! The rooms were clean and there was even a comfortable rocking chair. The bathroom shower had good water pressure, the shower curtain was clean and looked new, and the bathtub was clean as well (my pet peeve). The queen size bed was firm and comfortable, no sags, the pillows were fluffy and soft, and the bedding was fresh, and the comforter was clean. The room had a sleeper sofa and the sofa had no noticeable smells so it seemed like it had been cleaned recently. Also, the kitchenette had everything we needed to make a spaghetti supper. We decided to cook our own meals, so we purchased everything from the Co-op store nearby. The view of the ocean was spectacular, and even though it was windy (which is typical of the area), the rooms were well-insulated so the wind was muffled and we had a peaceful night's sleep. We really enjoyed our one night stay and will definitely go back and recommend this place to our friends and family.

Room Tip: All rooms have a beautiful view.
