Burton's Sunset Oasis Motel
Reviewed October 8, 2011

We arrived at 5:30PM and found that the local eatery and the only grocery store in town had already closed for the day. All we had with us were chips and dip and we were starving - but loathe to make the 10 mile drive back to the Cabot Trail and the nearest open restaurant.. To the rescue came Mr Burton who provided us with hot dogs, buns, ketchup and mustard - all at no charge. Best meal I had on the trip!! As we waited for sunset, Mr Burton taught me how to play 'washers' and showed me how to build a washers set of my own. He is a fascinating man to talk to and is a wealth of local information. And yes, the room was spotless and the bed comfortable and the scenery incredible....but its probably the hospitality that I'll remember most

We arrived in the afternoon and the first question I asked the owner was if he knew what time the last Whale watching tour left. He looked at his watch and replied "about 10 minutes ago". He then offered to phone Oshan Whale Watch to see if the last tour had actually left. Luckily for us, and thanks to the owner's quick phone call, we made the last tour (which was pretty cool). That's great service and we really appreciated it.

As for the motel, the other reviews say it all. Other than the really weak Wi-Fi (we were in room 4), I have nothing but good things to say about it. If in the area again, I would certainly stay here again.

Room Tip: No Wi-Fi past room three.

Yep, the view is expansive and the sunset is hard to beat. But harder, still, to beat is this kind of service. This area is remote and the nearby choices for dining are limited, especially when you arrive late in the day. But the rooms here offer kitchenettes. In our hurry to get to the grocery store before it closed, we forgot to check and see if the kitchenettes included ovens. They didn't, and there we were with frozen pizzas. No problem! The proprietors cooked the pizzas in their own kitchen and delivered them to our door. The rooms -- only five in all -- were whistle clean. The only downside was the lack of wi-fi, or even telephones for that matter. But in such a pristine place, eventually even that seemed to be a plus. Good, simple friendly -- YES!

Room Tip: Remember there are only five!

The location is beautiful, scenic & peaceful. We missed the sunset since it was cloudy that evening. The rooms were spacious & clean. The beds were comfortable. The service was friendly and courteous. The motel is located about a 15 minute drive away from the Cabot trail if you don't mind the extra drive. There is a takeout place just down the hill and the owner delivered the food to our room which was nice. Pleasant Bay which is known for whale watching tours is only about a 30 min drive although I believe there are whale watching tours starting from very close to the motel. Pleasant Bay whale watching tours started earlier in the morning at 9:30am and hence we chose to go there on our way down to Halifax.

Yes, as everyone else has commented, it has a great view over the ocean! We loved it! It's also close to a whale watching trip, which we found convenient. The room is clean, with all the kitchenette! That's rather a plus as there isn't any restaurants nearby. You could buy something to cook yourself at a Co-OP nearby though.

The reasons that I didn't give it a five are that: the microwave didn't function well, and we had to ask the host there whom told us a trick in order to make it function. The oven was out of order. The fridge isn't really freezing. The Internet signal get's weak after room3. Also, they don't provide hair dryer.

Room Tip: Try to get room 1 to 3, they have better Internet access

To enjoy this gem you'll venture off the Cabot Trait for a bit. Burton's sits just about at the northernmost tip of Cape Breton. The views from the bench outside your room are simply divine. This piece of property is breathtaking. And, the owners exude such a casual, genuine friendliness, we didn't want to leave! Our teens loved having a library of movies from which to choose, at no charge. Rooms are cozy and very clean and well-maintained. Kitchenette was great to have, and local very small grocery co-op is close by to grab a few provisions. Check for annual crab dinner at the volunteer fire station a short walk down the hill from the motel. Watch the boats come in and enjoy a whale-watching boat ride, all within a two-minute drive from the motel. Drive to Meat Cove for a casual breakfast out if you don't want to cook. Will definitely come back on our next trip.
