This was an emergency stay - we had not booked but the motel was practically empty and there was no one manning the reception desk (a common occurrence during our stay). We were told we would have to wait an hour for a room to be cleaned (and it took the full hour).

When we were eventually shown to our room at 5pm, it was basic to say the least.

The furniture and decor leave much to be desired. No extra pillows or blankets and the ones provided are so old that you could be sleeping on a thin towel.

The bed was like sleeping in a bucket...we kept falling/rolling on top of one-another all night. We have only ever stayed anywhere else this bad when we stayed in a tiny hotel in Taroudant in Morocco (we were very young and it was incredibly cheap).

The bathroom was so basic that it was practically non-existent. There was absolutely nowhere to leave your toiletries except the grimy floor. The toilet paper is in a sheet-by-sheet dispenser.

The manager left a scribbled phone number at reception that we were instructed to call if we needed assistance - a ridiculous policy and such a waste of time!

However, when he couldn't book us a taxi for dinner, he offered to drive us in to town himself - which was incredibly generous and we are very grateful.

We spent a good hour trying to find another hotel but they were all full or not answering the phone (France were playing in the final of the Euro 2016 that evening).

The window to our room was supposed to slide open but it was broken and we felt exposed all night - anyone could have just wandered in.

This place is totally overpriced for 75 euros a night. Do not stay here unless, like us, you are desperate.

Our car broke down and was towed to a garage, near this hotel. I was worried a little and the only place for us to stay was a caravan. To my surprise it was nit only clean, but very well sound proofed, so the noise of the motorway nearby did not make it into the room. I slept excellent and the room was clean. The breakfast was so, so, but coffee was fine and breakfasts in France are almost always a so, so affair. I would not come here for my holiday, but a night over when you need to have an early start the next day is fine.

We arrived at the motel late at night after 15 hours drive. We got confirmation of the reservation with arrival at 2 am. The receptionist refused to open the door in spite the fact her reception was 3 meters from the entrance. We were left behind the door. We spent the night in the car at the car park of the motel. The motel looked rough so maybe it was as good as their hospitality gets.

Booked to stay here to break up our trip before catching the ferry. Big mistake. Just awful. Best advice - do not do stay here.
I have never seen such a poor hotel or experience such poor service I certainly will never come here again and I urge anyone reading this review to try somewhere else, anywhere else do not stay here. Pass the word on - tell your friends

Pro: bright rooms with big window (terrace door), a lot of flowers in the outdoor facilities, daily fresh bread for breakfast

Contra: very dirty, big spiders in clearly visible places in the room, dust and hair in the corners, dirt and leftovers under the pillow of the sofa, the toilet paper runes out at the second day of our stay and never had been replaced, cloudy water in the calcified water boiler. I´ve no problem with outmoted and old facilities but it has to be clean and at an adequated price but Motel 21 was dirty and overpriced (80 Euro per night, 10 Euro for breakfast) considering that the motel is situated about a 15 minutes walk from Bergues. The stuff is self-opionionated. We wanted to cancel the breakfast for the last day of our stay the day before but we were not allowed to do this with refer to the „tax“. That´s totally absurd because we never got an invoice (just a handwritten post-it with „4 x 80 Euro = 360 Euro“). The reception was rarely manned therefore you have to declare your arriving time and breakfast time in advance. The stuff speaks bad english.

There is no buffet for breakfast as shown on pictures at the homepage, you will find tea bags, cocoa powder and cereals stand by a table in the breakfast area but no hot water or milk, both packages of cereals were out-of-date for months, the requested milk was also expired and brought in a dirty milk can, the butter was also out-of-date for some days but it was still OK to eat, if you ask for coffee you get a big coffee pot with content for only one cup per person but coffe is refilled on request, there was a spider hanging on the coffee can, at one day we got salami and cheese, the other days there was only sweet stuff for breakfast.
